I have no room for another bench, so this is going to be perfect for me. I look forward to the next video. Also, it's pretty clear you're exercising and eating healthy. You look leaner, stronger, healthier and more youthful. Good for you!
Jay, did you consider making the legs on the front side vertical. You wouldn't have the access or clearance problems and would be able to clamp large workpieces like doors or large panel to the face of the bench. With the back legs splayed out I think it would be stable and resist lateral forces when hand planing.
Youve come a long way from those old videos in an apartment workshop man, much respect!! :) I still remember those wise words you once taught me........Its not the arrow, its the Indian ;) You look happy and healthy....keep doin your thing brother!! :)
You changed your shop around. 🤔 Nice! 😉🤟 I was literally talking to someone yesterday about my lack of woodworking bench due to space, I think this may solve that problem! 💪😎
These kind of practical projects are what I like. I, (and I suspect many others) simply can't relate to a "computer run" CNC machine. What I enjoy are the great designs with high quality workmanship, ending with a practical and useful project for the average individual. Also good explanations and video work. Thanks for another great video Jay. Beautiful work.
I love what you have done here. I have been trying this for over a year and have always come up short. I see what I have done wrong and am going to fix it. Although I am a hand tool wood worker, I love your channel. Keep the good stuff coming.
Jay, I just purchased the plans and love them. One thing I think you should add though. We have always used our lower shelf as tool holding and I thought adding some tool holding options for the lower stretcher might be something that could be added. The tool tray in the accessories is nice but a full length tool holding option down under might be nice as well. Great job on the design of this bench! This is the perfect compromise for those of us to need to be mobile.
Beautiful build with quality tools! I know that you are also a master with hand tools and basic drill, driver, and track saw, etc. Would love to see you build the exact bench (or something similar) with the tools of the everyday woodworker. I would love to buy the plans for something I could actually build. Thanks, Jay.
Fwiw, I got the plans last night, and made it through initial cut, surfacing and glue up with a circular saw, a random orbital sander, and some clamps (all from harbor freight) I intend to do the routing with a $25 trim router and some barstock for straight edge guides. The plans are really well laid out and make the above very possible. It's more work, but not too much more.
Hi just been watching your vids on the work bench. Great idea especially for site work. Was looking at making a small table top bench but I will be making one of these now, thanks great idea. I see you have legs at 90 degrees why not make rebates on the bench splayed outwards 7-10degrees. They would still pull out, and flat pack. I had a car years ago and I never glued the legs in on my traditional saw horses they were splayed and pulled out to flat pack them to go in the boot. Bit more mucking about but might be more stable without the use of a sand bag? Still, very good idea. Nick Rust
Love the editing! Well designed work horse. Practical and portable. Great job including Casitas when you made that mistake on the top - happens to all of us!
Steve Ramsey WWMM is the OG. Most everything April Wilkerson does is jacked up. But, I guess I'm not looking at what most everyone else is in her videos. 🤣
When I need leather to skin a vise, I got to Goodwill and buy an old leather purse for next to nothing, it provides enough leather for several projects, and they go with my eyes so well.
That's a great idea! Unfortunately where I live (I suspect this is not true most other locations) the prices at Goodwill are almost the same as buying new! They used to be cheap. No more.
My dude this is just what I'm looking for. I don't have a garage. I don't have a shop. I need something thats sturdy and can break down and store out of the way. But first I need some tools. Going to use a minimum of power tools because I don't have that many.
Now, THAT is a sawhorse. WOW! It combines all the best qualities of a good sawhorse with those of a good portable workbench. Nicely done. Thanks for the video. BTW: I'll bet two bags of softener salt would work for extra weight, too.
First of all, excellent video! I love the editing and subtle comments and captions you add to them. Second of all, if this your idea of a simple DIY project with just a few power tools, you would either laugh or cringe at my simple projects.
Excellent bench and DIY video! Couple questions if you have a moment to reply... 1) MicroJig recommends doing all dovetail tracks in two steps by doing a preliminary cut with a 1/4 square bit. How did it work out with just doing a single pass with your dovetail bit with your cordless mini router? 2) Plywood and hardwoods are commonly matched with the MicroJig clamps for strength and durability. How has your softwood bench held-up over time with the dovetail clamps? I suspect moderate clamping pressure would avoid possible breakouts.
Jay man these are so great, Great design, and great video editing very enjoyable, also I wanted you when you started and looks like I missed a bit you have lost some weight and look great man stay healthy
My own Matchfit Workhorse build is under way. Working on routing all the dovetail slots right now. Made more then a couple of screw ups (but each were recoverable). However, it definitely is a challenge when I don't have a large table saw (just a jobsite one). It certainly made it difficult to cut the mortises in the top. I wound up just cutting the left and right of each one by hand (pull saw) then hogging out the rest with a circular saw. One dovetail groove went off kilter, so I had to fill it back in with epoxy (thankfully I had plenty left over from a previous project) and will have to re-cut that one again.
This is definitely a fantastic tool! I was spellbound and mesmerized by the video Jay! I have to buy the plans, and can’t wait for the 2nd part of the video to get the information for the accessories. Here’s the thing, it’s a killer idea for a breakdown welders/ metal fabrication bench as well!!!
Nice build! Those little blocks you flush cut off the tops of the legs--glue them to the outside top of each leg, flush with the bench top. This provides parallel clamping surfaces across the top of the bench even where the legs are.
This fills two of my needs. I was just looking for a set of quality saw horses and I also wanted to build a bench to try my hand at hand tools. I will definitely be looking to build this in the near future. Awesome design.
And no disrespect man, that's a killer project and an incredibly useful mini bench. Just saying this is not remotely an entry level or "just a few common tools" kind of endeavour. Really dig the design and the microjig stuff is very cool. Love the Red Wing handles on your cabinets too! Cheers, apologies if I sounded like an ass
A few power tools.. Pulls out table saw with 2 different blades, and dado stack, with cross cut sled, miter saw, one hand held router, one router table, 3 different router bits, festool sander, jointer, planer and drills.. So yeah, guess we don't need a CNC machine, just every other tool that most of us don't have in the shop..
Absolutely BRILLIANT! Something so simple yet so functional - made from cheap lumberyard materials so it’s also inexpensive. Is this your design, Jay? It looks like some long lost (and rediscovered) old-timey design that woodworkers used 150 years ago. I love that it’s not only a very functional workbench but two of them make excellent sawhorses. And the knockdown aspect for storage and portability?! Truly outstanding in every way. Inspirational!
Nothing short of genius, both the project and the video. The giggling guy popping up when you find a mistake had me laughing out loud. Keep up the great work, my man.
Love the fact that you showed your mistakes. Thought after all these years, only I made mistakes. Would love for you to give the total time you invested in the projects, besides the filming.
It's a great looking and practical project, but I'm really curious how the slots are holding up. It seems that all of the clamping pressure will be transferred to the "point" of the chamfered slots with most of the slots running with the grain and intersected every 8-10 inches by perpendicular slots. I would expect those "points" would break off with regular use and you'd be left with just a square(ish) dato slots.
I’d be curious to see what this build would look like out of laminating plywood together? Recently got into hand tools but I’m having to start over on my benches. I don’t have a planer nor a bench to hand plane, maybe laminating a good 7 layer plywood would work well?
I'm really excited to build this one! I just built Tamar's loose tenon mortising jig that uses the matchfit clamps and track hardware, and they are so versatile. I might have dovetail tracks on everything in my shop soon! Thanks Jay!
I really miss this kind of video. Nice work. Also, I use Festool MFT's for my on-site work. They are heavy and kind of pain to load/unload. I'm very interested in this design as a possible replacement. Well done.
Showing all the little techniques without gassing on with needless verbal exposition: Excellent.

Jay...Enjoy your builds...like the versatility...and your long term thinking...bought the plans will make it...
First time viewer. Great editing and I love the comment overlays. Entertaining and informative. Nice job.
CNC MACHINES HAVE THIER PLACE BUT---YOU ARE A MASTER OF THIS KIND OF VIDEO!! MAY THERE BE MANY MORE TO COME!!
Dobrý den děkuji za nápad a posílám pozdrav z České Republiky👍👍👍
I like these "I screwed up" moments. You're bigger in my eyes because you are not trying to present yourself as a mr. Perfect. Cheers!
Jay, this is my favorite format of video. Building something useful out of box store lumber. The editing is 10/10.
Beautiful design. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep Making. God Bless.
I like the end product, but man, that editing! A joy to watch.
if you haven't seen it, you might like Jay's "Portable French Cleat Router Table - 143".
I came here to say this. You got me, fam.
I miss your videos like these. Very clever.
Have to say, been watching you for years and your push stick is still the best in my opinion. The only one I trust.
Help! That jig for the bandsaw just blew my mind! Nice!
Exactly. I hope the plans for that are in the build plans for the workhorse
It's just a rectangle piece of scrap MDF with a miter cut in it. It's literally just a piece of panel with a single angled cut.
Now come on Jay,'just a few power tools!' That I don't have! Looks good so will add to my project list( with mostly hand tools)😊
You could do it with handsaws & planes, just takes longer & more effort, then it's just drill & router electricals to finish off where necessary
Brilliant idea, best thing since the Black & Decker Workmate
I came back to see video, I do enjoy watching your videos and how you work your projects, thanks.
I have no room for another bench, so this is going to be perfect for me. I look forward to the next video.
Also, it's pretty clear you're exercising and eating healthy. You look leaner, stronger, healthier and more youthful. Good for you!
I seriously miss these kinds of videos from you.
Truth be told so do I
Brilliant! Great video, great knock-down workhorse design. Always useable, useful, grown-up ideas. Cheers Jay.

That laughing guy gets me every time! Awesome job on the edit!
Too bad he died a month ago :'(
Outstanding video work! Great project - I will be buying the plans. Loved the goof-up clips
A great hybrid, really clever, and I love the simple adjustment to the bottom clamp to make up for shrinkage over time.

Putting a shim down from the top would also be a quick fix for the leg-top joint loosening. Great project and video Jay, thanks
What an incredible video: helpful and full of good work and incredible production value.
Lol😜 "You don't need a lot of tools to do this" wth??🤣🤣🤣 But hey!! This is a great project to do! Thank you!! Love your videos 👍🏼👍🏼
Love the editing! Well designed work horse. Practical and portable. Great job including Casitas when you made that mistake on the top - happens to all of us!
One of the best designs I have seen, I will be ordering the plans and making a set. Excellent job.
very impressed well planned & design.Tx for posting
Watching Jay build with with 2x material is like "going home" again. Jay is one of the original Woodworkers on RUclips. (Jay-Mattias-April-Heisz).
How about you gonna leave out the wood whisperer? He's the OG youtube woodworker.

Once again, a well thought out project. Something very useful. Thanks, Jay.
The explanation was spot on.

Very well done video, Jay! You've stepped up your special effects and editing!
Nothing special with the edit. Been doing that for many years.
As the legs expand outward and a gap forms at the top, that's a good place slide little wedges in from the side or the top!
Vintage Jay. Great build and video. Also nice to see the mistakes (and how they were fixed).
Nice Microjig assessory. Now. Show us how we use it / can't live without it.

I agree. It's a little much to say, "a few power tools," and then immediately move to the thicknesser.
Most DO have the tools
Unless you only have your hands and some rocks, then these are just excuses to keep being lazy.
I have a cnc machine
