Sunscreen Science

In today’s experiment we have one of our volunteers, Tiffany, show us how sunscreen and the melanin pigment protects us from the sun’s harmful UV rays. UV rays emitted by the sun can cause DNA damage in our skin cells, or cause the breakdown of chemicals used to colour paper. Sunscreen and melanin can protect us by either absorbing the UV rays or reflecting them off so they can’t do any damage. For this experiment, you will need scissors, sunglasses (optional), some small solid objects, tape, a heavy weight, a large piece of plastic wrap, a marker, 1 piece of black construction paper, sunscreen, and a sunny day. You can skip ahead to 0:36 to jump right into the experiment.
