I am Simon, a third year PhD candidate at the University of Exeter. I upload videos on bits of science which are relevant to what I do, and sometimes just because they're really cool.

The crash course videos are really informative Simon, thanks :)
Keep going with the crash course videos, they are superb! Its exactly the sort of thing that needs exposure. This was such a personable friendly vlog :)
+Anastasia Chouryguin Thank you! I'll make sure the videos keep coming :)
I'm loving your crash course videos - please keep making them!!
+Dan Bosworth yay! I'll try and keep them coming :)
First, so lucky to be watching your videos. I really like the style and the way you speak although sometimes it's too fast to catch up. Previously, I thought I would go to work after getting my master degree (M1 now). But recently, your videos and your PhD's life are changing my plan!!! Feel lost...
I always like your video's, great educational content and very well explained. Keep up the good work! I'll also share these video's with my physics friends here in Belgium. :)
+Jorn G Awesome! That's so cool, I'll try and keep making good videos for you to share :)
Hiii Simon, definitely keep the crash courses going! also love The Shining reference ;)
+Leo Studies Got to please the film fans! ;)
Ah, the TBR article list never ends, though it gets more tolerable. I love your videos!
I really enjoyed watching this vlog! Made my evening after a grumpy day. Good luck with your work! :)
PS: I luckily bought my Star Wars tickets at 5:58 on a Tuesday morning. :-)
+walesz92 lucky! And thank you :)
"I don't do PhD unless I sleep"
Never has it been better stated.
:)
your crash course videos are really good, please make more :)
+Espen Hoijord yay thank you! I'll try my best to keep them coming :)
How do you get yourself to do work? I find it so difficult to actually do work and practice. Reading around the subjects is easy. But actually doing the work seems to drain my life away. Do you have this issue, if so how do you cope? (I know university is much harder. But the methods of motivation should be similar)
+john smith What work are you referring to? Are you at Sixth Form?
RosePheonix I am at the moment. But I am sure the methods apply to anything in life.
+john smith it's tough! And I think the motivation to actually work varies from person to person, but what I used to think about to motivate myself was to keep an end goal in mind - when I was in school that was the goal of being an ESA astronaut. And in order to reach that goal I knew that I needed to go to a good university and ideally get a postgrad degree in physics. And in order to do that... I first needed to get my GCSEs! So I used an end goal to provide motivation to the intermediary goals between me and what I ultimately wanted to do.
SimonOxfPhys Thanks. Although secretly I was waiting for some secret piece of knowledge to make it click...
It would please me very much to have such enthusiasm as you do, when I get to university.
Who would have thought my largest challenge in life would be to convince myself to do something.
Hello Simon!
First of all, wow. You are working really hard and it really does show so be proud!
Secondly you should sleep a bit more. It's ok if the videos don't come out as frequently, we'll be here to watch them anyway! So no pressure! (Plus it's better for us who are studying so that we don't spend our nights on RUclips instead of SLEEPING...)
And lastly, I just commented because it has become a tradition for me to say something after watching your videos.
Goodnight.
+Sofia Martany Keep commenting, I love seeing them! And thank you for saying that - this month in particular I need to watch that I do enough things other than work, and take time out to do things like sleep. Having an audience that wants me to do that too makes things much easier :)
Hello Simon :) I really enjoyed this video - thank you! How long does it take to get to Exeter cathedral from your office? Is it on the university campus like Guildford cathedral/University of Surrey?
Also, the saxophone... Is it yours and, if so, do you play it much at the moment? So many questions, sorry...
I'm going to catch up with your crash course videos tomorrow evening to reward myself for completing one lot of work and to set me up for the next lot which I'll have to start ploughing through on Saturday. I'm really looking forward to watching them :)
I hope you've managed to catch up on a bit of sleep since you filmed this?
+Kendra Johnson I love questions!
1. So Exeter cathedral is in the centre of town while the uni is on the outskirts - unfortunately it's about a 30 minute walk so if I'm singing there it takes a fair chunk out of my day. Worth it though.
2. Yes the saxophone is mine! She's called Cassandra. Unfortunately I haven't found the time to play her properly for a while, but I still have a pet project of working through the Bach cello suites transcribed for saxophone. Maybe that could be a future video series!
3. Sleep... has been kind of caught up on... these videos don't edit themselves you know!
But my goodness do you go through risk and inconvenience just to get around asking for a favor, give people a chance and theyll be glad to do it and glad you provided the occasion
'Title blah blah blah....classic' :')
I feel your pain and I'm only a 2nd year! Brilliantly hilarious video btw.
Keep it up :)
Can´t wait for Star Wars!
+Wayne Bohr Same! Don't think I've ever been so excited for a film
This was really motivational :) Do you also have/choose to teach undergraduates?
IS THAT A LIGHTSABER PEN? WHERE DID YOU GET THAT ?
+Decochae Ryan YES! I wondered how long it would be before someone noticed. It came from a set that I got in my christmas stocking so I don't know where it came from I'm afraid - I have a green one in the office and a red sith one at home if that helps!
How can you see whole night sky via your pc? Which Live Feed are you using?
You look completely drained out.
r u barry alan
Keep up the crash course, honestly you should really consider being a teacher or work in education!
+Jina 💕 I'd love to do educational content like it full time after graduating!
liked for the thumbnail xD
Haha thank you - it might be my favourite one that I've ever made!
well.. that was hilarious😛 all (undergraduate) quantum theory and no sleep just makes me aggressive lol
I better start studying in a more positive mood!
One day i hope to do a pHD in physics like you!
interested in how it went as well!
That music you played when showing that picture of Thomas Frank....was it taken from "sleep" by Eric Whitacre?
This makes me so curious right now :D. Thanks for the video
+Louise K. YAAAY somebody got the music reference! It absolutely was :D
Your vlogs are so interesting. Your PhD vids definitely make me want to do a PhD after my Physics degree
+Grace Lewis yay! :D
Are you doing phD now?
Omg are you in that tall physics building in Exeter? I used to walk past that everyday!
Best of wishes for your PhD :)
Best intro to a video so far! Love these vlogs
fluid mechanic is amazing
First, I would hate to see how many cups of coffee/red bulls you down in a day.
Second, what did you spend the Amazon gift card on?
HAIL HYDRATE!
Your's is the channel where you watch and don't stop. There is so much content to go through! Great, great work mate.
Have you thought of using the search function in PDFs rather than highlighting?
Great organisation. 👍
how many hours u were able to sleep during ur PhD...years...Bhaiya...
Very less
Hi I'm new to this channel, is his major atmospheric science?
In PhDs you don't major or minor - you study one subject to an incredible level of detail. See my most recent video for more on this!
@0.51 is that Stewart's essential Calculus?
nope, that would be Vallis' 'Atmospheric and Oceanic Fluid Dynamics'!
I don't know why it's taken me a few days to watch this video, didn't get any notifications which was strange! Oh well I'm here now and it's great as always man. Amazing intro 😂
+George Arthur Arg you're not the first person to say this. Bloody RUclips! And thanks :)
+SimonOxfPhys I don't know if you can help with this, but I'm going to have to find a way of blocking out your channel why I try hopelessly to revise ;) the joys of professional procrastination....
