I used the ATM at the Scotiabank in downtown Nassau once while on a port call on a cruise. I have a Canadian Scotiabank account so I figured ok, I can use a few extra dollars just in case. So I used the machine, it asked if I wanted to withdraw in Bahamas currency or U.S. I chose U.S, so I look at my withdrawal slip and was shocked at my balance! I had quite a large amount of money in that account when I left Canada, it was now showing much, much less! Couldn’t figure out what happened! So we stood there after walking right into the bank and looked at the line up. Thought about it, I have to see someone to figure out if someone had got into my account a took a few thousand dollars from me. Then my son says, hold on, you took American dollars out? So the balance is in American dollars, not Canadian. Oh yeah, right, never thought of that. I’m assuming since it is a Canadian bank and I have a an account here my balance would show Canadian dollars. No, it gave my balance in U.S because I withdrew in U.S $’s, it probably would have given me a balance in Bahamas money if I had chosen that. What a relief! I’ll never forget that. We have never ate or drank at a Margaritaville, one in every port it seems but pricey, and even the one in Niagara Falls Canada we walked in, looked around saw some prices and left…I know I’m cheap!
