@maka6134most likely the most exaggerated story is the capture of the one hundred germans at once. And for the most accurate, it wouod be the liberation of Zwolle and the holding of hill 224 agaisnt the Chinese army, 19 men against ~17,000, which make around 786 Chinese per Canadian soldier,
@Delta_Lord_42 I am Dutch and i can tell you right now no he did not liberate Zwolle here in my home country. I find it a bit funny that after the stories about Leo Major and Michael Wittman, the narrator brings up the possibility that Leo's story was sensationalized to the point of fiction for the purposes of propaganda. While listening to this, something didn't really vibe. I've done a lot of study on WW2. Most of these stories I've heard. 'course, not all of them-- but Wojtek and "Mad Fighting Jack" I've had many run-ins with. I made a note on my desk pad to look up the Leo Major story after watching the video and check sources to check validity before that part played, not because the accomplishments felt off-- but because there was never any impartial witness to the achievement. It was always solo. Just unusual. Granted, not impossible-- but Whittman's story definitely felt much more realistic in terms of possibility and consistency. I've heard a lot of off the wall accomplishments in history, but usually it has to do with things that are a product of the situation causing events to allow for such a thing-- people in-general are not generally incompetent for an entire war. So, while looking for sources-- I'm not surprised to find that it's very murky on Major's story. I think the idea it might be propagandized is not entirely incorrect. A shame, considering how many incredible stories that weren't embellished came from the war.
To be fair (to Leo Major) even Michael Wittman's kill count and achievements were questioned after the war. Historians claimed he destroyed less allied tanks than what the germans claimed and that he counted abandoned tanks as kills too. It was also proven that german high command would exagerate the amount of kills of their ace pilots for aircraft. Leo Major does also have some serious courage to lie about these events (if he did lie) when he is often the only source and person on his missions.
It's just better to admit that neither side of the war can be trusted to give out “most accurate” information. One side will tell one sweet little lie, the other will tell tall tales of “great men”. I just wish there was more freedom of information to give the common person the ability to dissect history.
That doesn’t surprise me at all. Honestly all numbers are grain of salt moments. That all being said, one got promoted very very quickly in an extremely high jump. The other not so quickly and verification on both sides is a bit difficult. I really don’t find war stories incredibly heroic or inspiring to begin with since it’s a matter of idolizing murder- but in the moment and directly after it isn’t much different from a game match. The man with the bigger count has a more compelling story. They get remembered. All-in-all they’re both interesting stories. There’s a healthy amount of doubt on both ends, but I do agree with the video making the point of history being dictated by the victor, and the losing side did have less tales of valor than the allies. Not because they didn’t have as many harrowing encounters- but because it would have been socially life-ending to openly tell such stories after the axis were defeated.
4:21 It's a goddamn Henry Stickmin Reference. The channel is not only cultured in history but also on the pop culture media like TF2, Valiant Hearts, and Jojo bizarre Adventure
47:12 Those headlines had me in stitches. They Read. April 12th -Sarah's cat has been stolen again. -Bike thrown in water April 13th -Slept safe and sound Nothing April 14th -Do we want more or less nazi's? (In reference to something a dutch populist politician asked about muslims a few years back). -Liberated the city
58:13 Mistake - Those Polish soldiers didn't flee from Germany. They were released from Soviet POW after being captured in 1939. In 1941 they were released due to German invasion of Soviet Union when the Brits told them to because they wanted to make an alliance. They made it to Iraq on their own with no help from Brits or Russians.
Keeping young generation hooked on to history for an hour when most of them have an attention span of barely ten seconds is an accomplishment in itself. 1:14:25
This is one of the best, if not THE best historic video I've ever seen. Just like you said, a lot of people do make video about WW2, but almost no one talks about this type of characters, that are often overshadowed by something bigger. The style of the drawings, the narrative and the jokes with the spectator make your videos even more entertaining and funny to watch, while still learning interesting historcal facts. And you didn't talk only about the Allies and criticize the Nazi's stories just because they are Nazis, but you simply tell the facts, without discrediting one side or the other. I love your videos man, you are the best history youtuber right now, and you have the potential to grow even bigger. I'm really sad that your art is underrated, you deserve a lot more followers. I'm sorry that I dont have the money to join your Patreon right now, but I will do it for sure in the future, if you continue being so good. I hope you'll have a great day man, thank you so much for your artwork. (I apologize in advance if I made any grammatical errors, English is not my first language.)
@stecarta2660 Oh, please. The whole "history is written by the victors" narrative in the context of WW2 is bulshit. Even the mainstream professional Western historiography was for decades treating the self-aggredizing and whitewashing accounts of German generals, like Franz Halder and Heinz Guderian, not nearly critically enough. Plus, there are a lot of pop-historians and military history fans with borderline fetishist obsession with the Nazies.
My theory is that Waldo is the future version of Oliver, and he did something TERRIBLE TO TIME. And now he's trying to kill his past self to avoid making that mistake

@lima4-2angel i actually agree with you
Most of the bias I have for stuff is because I dont want to be associated with Nazi's just because I look up german stuff in WW2

Yeah a game would be so fire especially the lore because they are already doing a great job with the lore behind these history videos
or SS- Tier
(I will see myself out)
I agree
Fun fact: Wojtek was promoted from Privet to Corporal after that battle. Which makes him the first animal to ever get promoted.
Wasn’t Cher Ami promoted in WW1?
There was a duck on the American side that was promoted to Major

not just any bear this is Wojtek
"Frankly I enjoyed the war" was a quote not by Jack Churchill, but by Adrian Carton de Wiart (a WW1 officer that could have his own video made about him).
To Me, the fact that this was said by a WWI vet only makes him more unhinged.

@owlyon but still he manage to save the korean place even tho they're outnumbered
I'm just glad he didn't bring up Christopher Lee's possibly stolen valor.

It's crazy to think that these lads were in the same war
58:13 Mistake - Those Polish soldiers didn't flee from Germany. They were released from Soviet POW after being captured in 1939. In 1941 they were released due to German invasion of Soviet Union when the Brits told them to because they wanted to make an alliance. They made it to Iraq on their own with no help from Brits or Russians.
Most other history youtuber: *talk about the general of ww2 not the person
Historically: "Fine I'll do it myself"
And got most of the facts wrong, like he messed up so many things on Leo Major, it hurts my soul...
Keeping young generation hooked on to history for an hour when most of them have an attention span of barely ten seconds is an accomplishment in itself. 1:14:25

Edit: DANGIT IM WRONG, or the plotholes win
Thank you so much for the kind words! We will only get better and better :)
"Facts" is a strong word. More like telling the accepted story of the time.
@HeyHistoricallyall the words that I wrote were deserved :)
This is overly exaggerated and some points (a lot) are wrong, for example Leo Major, it is inaccurate on one of my favourite French Canadians.
I love how Leo Major is like an overpowered anime character lol
14:54 This part made me nearly CRY. DAMN YOU HISTORICALLY FOR MAKING ME FEEL THINGS!
5:54 German soldiers talking in Duolingo is a scene I did't know I needed until now.

My theory is that Waldo is the future version of Oliver, and he did something TERRIBLE TO TIME. And now he's trying to kill his past self to avoid making that mistake
22:07 I heard Michael Wittman and my immediate reaction was “Oh, that guy. The German propaganda poster boy.”
This looks like a character selection screen 1:07
