  • "When my father told the commandant that he is getting married to my mother (Wanda Nowicka) there was a lot of opposition. The commandant threatened him. He said, "If you marry her, I will see that you lose your job. I will make your life hell. You will not be able to live.” My mother didn’t care what will happen to her; how she will live here in India without her family members. I think she didn’t think anything of these.
In 1946, my father along with around 20 of his friends went to the camp and rightfully took his would-be bride from the camp. When my parents got married she didn’t know English, Hindi-Marathi and my father didn’t know Polish. So I don’t know how they communicated with each other, but somehow they managed.” - Ashok Kashikar, son of Wanda and Vasant Kashikar
"She used to make the Indian ‘pickle’ very well. So good that the neighbours used to ask for it. She had a different recipe. She used to tell me sometimes. I asked her how she got married. She used to say, when we came to stay in Valivade, ‘dada’ (Vasant) and his friends used to come there to supply us that… ration. (Food grains) we got together there. She came to Kolhapur on a bicycle for the marriage." - Swati Kashikar, daughter-in-law of Wanda and Vasant Kashikar
"She used to speak in Marathi; in very good Marathi. She used to even cook all the dishes of Maharashtra. Puranpoli (a special cuisine of Maharashtra) and all. She used to tell me about her brother and sister, how they came here, how they were in Karachi. They had a very hard time. They didn’t have anything to eat. I asked her how they survived; she told me they used to cut wood, and get bread and vegetables to eat." - Umesh Kashikar, son of Wanda and Vasant Kashikar
"There was curiosity in her eyes about what’s going on. We used to go into her house to hide while playing hide and seek. She used to come to us and try to ask if we wanted anything. Sometimes she used to also give us a little something to eat. But for us, more important than those snacks was to touch her hand and see if she is any different?!" - Rajanitai, neighbor of Wanda and Vasant Kashikar
