DIY Giant Light-Up Blockbuster Sign

- Hey everyone welcome back! Today I'm going to be showing the process of making a vintage-style light-up sign that replicates the old neon signs and fluorescent signs of the past. To make this happened, I combined the use of a CNC machine, LED lights, and a few other easy methods for beginners that are new to CNCs and woodworking.
The design itself was done in Adobe Illustrator but you can use any vector-based program you're comfortable with. If you're using a CNC, Vetric V Carve is a great product to use because it also writes the code necessary for the CNC machine to read.
I used the Stepcraft D840 CNC machine to do the carving but again, hand-cutting is another great option. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions or need assistance making your own! Looking forward to hearing your feedback.

Brett's Builds (Formerly known as Withjack Workshops) is a series of DIY videos showcasing fun and easy projects ranging anywhere from woodworking, restoration, and electronics of all kinds. The projects run the spectrum of easy to difficult, needing certain tools to accomplish but still easily completed by yourself. This particular video is a part of the series where I'm creating items for my Etsy shop to be sold online or just for the heck of it to try my hand at creating something new for the enjoyment of making, in which I can only hope it inspires you to make something yourself. @@thewarpsyrhead thank you! Gotta see it through, even if I gotta do it over 😂
Great video. I appreciated the fact you showed all of the roadblocks and how you overcame them. The bottle cap stand-offs are great too. Thanks for the tip!
@@gperme1993 thank you! And thanks for stopping by!
Dude, showing the struggle is so relatable and helpful for showing potential mishaps, risks and issues that could arise! It's bound to happen when you're creating something new for the first time, just part of the process of venturing into new territory! Amazing job dude, I absolutely adore the finished piece! Looks incredible!
@@pogslammer3082 thanks my duuuuude 💪
Cool project, nice job sticking with it. Turned out looking good.
@@garrettmatson5095 thank you!

@@DarkDioStudio Thank you ❤️ Now that you saw all my mistakes I’m sure you can make one with ease 😂
@@Bretts_Builds Haha I will. But I’m going the cheaper route. Using xps foam ✌🏼 Looking forward to your next build
@@DarkDioStudio sick, let me know how it turns out!
@@Bretts_Builds Will do!
Enjoyed the build and….. I had not considered using parchment paper to spread superglue or screws in bottlecaps to hold up work…….thank you!!
@@ssskids123 thank you! It only took a few times prying my fingers apart to figure out the super glue trick 😂 thanks for watching
it was a nice video.. more on the fun-reminder-of-various-mistakes-side than the educational side. I like your honesty and that you didn't cover up your mistakes through the editing process in order to present yourself as a pro. Kudos for that.
Also your honesty makes me write this comment.. and somehow i want to pay it back :)
If you are going to proceed with the sign making i think it's a must to use a compressor with a spray gun or even an airbrush for even finer details. In the long run you will save up some money, garbage and sanity. And/or in the cheaper side of things you can use a nice small smooth roller and then a very fine sandpaper will do the job too. ( you can find videos online how you can do that like a pro)
One last thing. Whenever you dive into some unknown materials and you dont know how they react with each other or how it will look in the end i find it extremely useful to make some small scale tests-experiments first. In that way, you save time, mistakes, money and frustration. E.g. when you sprayed the whole clear plastic you could use a few small offcuts to test the best method for the style you want to achieve. I've learned this mindset from mythbusters and of course i use this method for myself and it has served me well.
My two cents,
Cheers :)
cut a ring of polycarbonate to go around the bearing and make the offset any size you want for that rabbit bit
@@kalebklein5665 genius, I gotta try that next time!! Thank you
Seems like a lot of dust? Could that cause some of the mis cuts?
@@alexwolf9778 it’s definitely possible. Im curious to see the results once I get a proper dust collection system going
