The Five Gods all embody different parts of Smash
Armada: He is the best melee player and a much better villain to Mang0 then Leffen.
Mew2King: He is the best Smash player having 2 (or 3) eras, as well as being best at Brawl, Project M, a God of Melee, and a notable Sm4sh player.
Mang0: He is the hero of Smash Melee with an enormous fan base and pompous "I'm the best" attitude he embodies crazy impractical play and sheer will power.
PPMD: He is the "Avatar" of Smash Melee. The only other person besides Mang0 to be able to really beat Armada. He, "brings balance" to the other 4 Gods. (We miss you PP)
HungryBox: HBox illustrates how far a "casual" player can go. Always (until just recently) he has put Melee in its place studying and working hard to make sure he has other solid job options, but now with EVO he shows why he went full-time.

Also I should add that I feel Hbox is also contender for beating armada considering he's the one that made armada develop a young link and alongside leffen was why he developed a fox after his young link started to run dry.

Not yet, a 2013-2014 Mag0 is comparable so far. This is the year that will determine it. Remember that GOML 2016 he did not do very well and TBH 6 was not as long ago as it seems and mang0 won that.

I think the melee community needs to move away from the labels of the "5 Gods". With the time away ppmd has taken, how long it's been since mew2king has won a major and armada winning everything it doesn't make sense anymore.
m2k won Shine 2016 over Mang0 and hbox, that was a great win
M2k may not be winning majors but he is always in top 8 and regularly makes it finals. He and S2J were the only people to challenge armada at genesis 4. Hes definitely a GOD. And the GOD title is eternal. Hence why leffen isnt considered a GOD even though he is on their level. The GOD era passed. Its like saying we shouldnt call dwayne johnson "the rock" anymore because he doesnt wrestle. Yes that he doesnt wrestle anymore but the rock is eternally with him.
I'm not debating whether or not M2K is a God. However, the foundation of the label was rooted in tournament wins. Tafokints calls Leffen a GOD in this very video 3:34 because he is winning: Big 6. I know the community enjoys stories and drama but the term 'God' is supremely outdated, especially for new players who are learning about the scene. Let's do something new.
Most of the community reffers to leffen as the god slayer. They even had a tourney for the gods titled "Battle of the 5 Gods". Even if god is outdated, its part of smash's legacy. Its a part that actually grew the community and got people to watch melee who dont even play. It would be ridiculous to do away with the god complex. It makes it that much more hype when they drop sets to non gods.
It's more about legacy than anything else. You're right, with PPMD out of the picture for now, he shouldn't be a God anymore. But he is, and he will forever be one. Hell, he can come back and never place top 8 again, but he will still be a God. Just like Ken is still the King of Smash despite not winning anything in recent times.
And now with the community being so large, people won't simply move away from this. It's safe to assume that if all six retired at the same time, people would just call the next group the New Gods or something.

Armada is my favorite player of all time. Hes so underloved just because he plays safe,optimal, and hes European.

I'm a Smash 4 player, and pay very very sparse attention to the budding point of Melee. And I watch this series every time since I subbed. But one thing I'd recommend is, try and work on your confidence in speech. You have the passion, the knowledge, and the theories that are top notch. But it feels like you're a little nervous. You're doing great, and I hope you know that.

Honestly, though I don't agree that Armada is the only God nowadays, I don't understand the argument that we're no longer in an era of five Gods:
Literally the only person to win a particularly large tournament outside of one of the Gods has been Leffen. Otherwise a God wins, every time. Maybe it's Armada. Maybe it's HBox. Maybe it's gonna be PPMD if he makes a return this year.
I get that the title is more of a legacy thing than a "this player is ten times better than almost every non-God" thing. But is it safe to say that we're still in an era of Gods and a few Godslayers?

In the city of Helsingborg, a city in the more southern parts of Sweden, I was 2 years back partying on new years eve with my friends. I enter the restroom of a nightclub we've been hanging out at for a couple of hours when I see Armada looking into the mirror while washing his hands. He was humbled that we recognized him and tagged along with us the following hours. This man is so kind, and it made me so happy to see.
Thought it'd be a funny anecdote to share :)
And I hope things go well for him in the future of smash bros!
Am I the only one upset at how little recognition PPMD got in this video? He completely outplays Armada when he's up for it. And he destroyed Armada 3-0 at Apex 2015, and won Apex 2014 against Armada.

Ziplile if you watch Ken back then he wasn't even very technical. Only thing he did that worked because of undeveloped meta was Ken Combo DI wasn't was good. He is just a very smart player and had better understanding than most players.
Tony Abbott go watch kens matches, he knew his tech fairly well actually. On Ken vs Azen back in the mlg days, he ledge tech like crazy, I don't see that tech used that often today

Glad that things have evened out more now with Hbox being arguably better while M2K, Plup, Leffen and Mang0 have taken notable wins. I reckon Ken is the most legendary right now, at least. He has the title 'King of Smash', and no other player owns a move like Ken owns Dancing Blade. Whenever anyone uses it the commentators scream "KEN!! KEN ARE YOU WATCHING??" I love it.

Have been able to do that these past years. The demi-gods are getting close but none of them have won a major yet. Plup so far is the closest with armada being the only god he needs to beat left.

At this point Armada should be considered the Zeus of the Gods or he should be given a whole new title. You can't take away the title God from the others. Ken still retains "King of Smash" despite the fact that he probably isn't even considered a top 200 player anymore.

(Real question, I have no idea, I am not a Melee player myself but interested in great champions whatever the game/sport is).
Armada is beyond the other gods now. You simply can't debate his supremacy anymore.
Armada is the best god. He is the best right now, and is the best of all time in Melee. He doesn't get the credit he deserves.

I don't care for arbitrary tags, but if the point of labeling him as the only god is to say that he's a level above the rest, then yeah, that's undoubtedly true.
Idk debatably m2k losing to s2j would be huge cuz m2k doesn't lose to falcon. I'd say m2k is, THE god. Think about it, m2k is the master of the marth ditto, master at the sheik ditto, and master of the falcon match up. Aswell he controls FD, he usually gets one game on FD free. And known as the spacies slayer. He has the best marth and best sheik to date. I'd say m2k is the God.
It makes me laugh when people say ppmd has a better marth than m2k. M2k still has a very postitive record vs ppmd in the marth ditto. And is the most graceful marth when it comes to chaingrabs, combos, and he's even giving armada a run for his money as of lately. I think what made ppmds marth good was ppmds fundamentals, not marth itself.

Armada is fantastic, but how can you say he was flawless? If Leffen, HBox, or Mango were at the tournament, he had trouble winning let alone make 2nd if 2 or all of them were there. He lost to Mango at Battle of the 5 Gods, GOML, WTF2, and BH6 and especially spanked him with Marth. He lost to Leffen at some tourney before Beast 6 and GOML. He lost to Hbox at Battle of the 5 Gods and EVO (and something else I believe but can't remember). He didn't attend Pound or EGLX (though he was sick for that one). He wasn't at SSC or Shine, and later on Mango was using Falco as an experiment of sorts. Lastly, PP, is his kryptonite.
Again, Armada's fantastic, but to say he's far above everyone else when he was pretty much tied in sets with HBox and Leffen and was losing in sets to Mango (by 4 I believe) is too much. He didn't do that well. 2015? sure make that call? not 2016 though.
ps. Leffen was barred from most major tournaments in 2016. If he weren't, I guarantee several tournaments would look vastly different.
By many definitions that I hear as far as dominance and consistency goes, he's the only god by the stats. Interestingly, one of the things that defines gods is the ability to beat Armada, no one outside of the 5 after Armada has been able to beat Armada, although if Shroomed keeps playing the way he has been he actually has a chance.

To be honest, I don't think a Melee player can play this game for longer than an athlete can play any other sport. I really worry that carpal tunnel is going to limit the length of all the Melee gods' careers to a decade or two at most.

I don't think Armada is the only God, in terms of legacy I do think him and Mango are definitely ahead in their upper tier however, of which Armada sits on the throne.

I think saying Armada is "the one and only god" is a bit disrespectful. The other gods are and will forever be gods, regardless of whether they perdure or eventually fall off: It's a legacy title, one that represents the sum of their acomplishments, not unlike Ken and "The King of Smash". I feel like the people in the community that have taken to referring to him as "The Champion" are onto something, tho :P
