  • Housing campaigners are urging tenants to check their service charge statements and challenge any mistakes.
It's after a group of residents accused their housing association of overcharging them thousands of pounds for services they hadn't used.
BBC London's Frankie McCamley has the story.

There all at it. 🙄. Always question your Service charges, before handing your money over.

It won't stop until leasehold is abolished. Bring on commonhold in 2023.

this is all down to the change from council owner and managed council properties to housing association companies. The former worked for the government and any costs were paid by the government so when things needed repairing, no one quibbled about getting the repair done immediately because it 'didn't cost them anything'; but when it's a private company that has to pay, they resist doing repairs, and spending on anything else that needs to be paid for e.g. making properties fire-safe after Grenfell. Now everything is a battle and all the HAs care about is profit.

Charged over £23,000 for works that were never completed, Camden council ignored complaints and just visited three times to get them rectifies but never done.

Its absolutely NOT right that the government allows:
"Is there a cap on how much service charges can rise by?
    Put simply, no.
In the UK, there is no legislation that caps how much service charges can rise by each year."
