- 3 years ago, I launched my most popular drum cover so far: Sultans of Swing. It got more than 28M views as per today but it’s also my most controversial cover. Quite a few Dire Straits fans complained that I ignored the part as originally recorded by Pick Withers. Instead, I covered the style of Terry Williams’ Alchemy Live version. What can I say? I was young and I needed the money!
Only joking… Today’s cover of Romeo and Juliet is my apology to Pick Withers and all Dire Straits fans. I tried hard to recreate the studio version note by note and I’m very impressed with Pick Withers’ original drum recording. This is some of the most tasty but also dynamic drumming I could possibly think of. Hopefully I didn’t mess this up again!

What's In A Name?, the Bard Asked. Quite a Bit, If It's Yours...;D
THE SONG - "Romeo and Juliet", by British rock band Dire Straits, was written by guitarist and vocalist Mark Knopfler. It appears as the second track of the band's third studio album 'Making Movies'. The album was recorded at the Power Station in New York between June 20 and Aug 25, 1980 and released on Oct 17, 1980. As a single, "Romeo and Juliet" was released on Jan 9, 1981.
'Making Movies' reached #19 on the US Billboard 200 album chart. It reached #3 in New Zealand, #4 in the UK, #6 in Australia, France, and the Netherlands, and #7 in Germany. As a single, the only chart info is that "Romeo and Juliet" reached #8 in the UK.
Knopfler's personal inspiration was his failed relationship with Holly Vincent. He includes lyrics that suggest he felt he was used by Vincent to forward her own career. According to SongFacts, "The line, "Now you just say, oh Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him," came from an interview where Holly Vincent was quoted as saying: "What happened was that I had a scene with Mark Knopfler and it got to the point where he couldn't handle it and we split up."
Aside from the influence of Shakespeare's classic, Knopfler artfully worked in references from songs that were themselves similarly inspired. In the second verse, the line "He's underneath the window she's singing, hey la my boyfriend's back" pays tribute to the #1 1963 hit "My Boyfriend's Back" by the American girl group The Angels. In the second chorus, the line "And there's a place for us, you know the movie song" references "Somewhere" [aka "Somewhere (There's a Place for Us)"] from the musical 'West Side Story' that was made into a movie in 1961.
THE DRUMMER - David ‘Pick’ Withers told 'Modern Drummer' he remembered "playing on biscuit tins with knitting needles as a child and asking my parents for drums". It took success in the "Boy's Brigade" in school before his parents bought him a simple set with no floor tom. He became a professional musician at 17 and a year later was playing a new Rogers kit for six months in Germany on the club circuit. He met Mark Knopfler in 1973 and played with him occasionally becoming a full-time member in 1977 when Dire Straits signed a record contract. Withers left the band in mid-1982 to spend time with his family and pursue his love of jazz.

THE ICON - The Iconology clinic is celebrating Lunar New Year which starts on Saturday. It also known as Chinese New Year but is observed in a number of other countries too. If you're celebrating, or just enjoying the festivities, best of luck to you in 2020, the Year of the Rat.
TRUE STORY DEPT - I suppose you wondered if I'd mention my name appearing in this song's title? Well, like Rosanna is always followed around by a certain Toto hit, I have my own little connection. FWIW, when I was in high school, the junior/senior classes staged a production of "R&J" to raise funds for prom. The faculty director wanted me to read for the part of Juliet. She thought Juliet played by a namesake would be cool, I would have loved to but I felt it was too cheesy. I ended up playing Juliet's nurse.
Awesome True Story JulietP!! As usual our Kasey Kasem duo came thru with some serious knowledge about the song, and I never knew the stuff about Pick Withers. You ladies are dynamite week in and week out.
Rosanna, just consider this a tribute to your mum ;)) Thanks so much!!
@@sina-drums Miss Sina, did you just do a Long Distance Dedication? ;) You are such a classy young lady. This is proof!
Cute story, Juliet! If they ever asked me to play a certain famous namesake of mine I'd turn it down too. Not so much because it would be cheesy, more that I couldn't bear applying method acting to that role.
thank you for great write up
A drummer doesn't need to play 250 bpm to show their skills. Pick Withers and now you Sina just demonstrated that fact perfectly with this classic Dire Straits song. Loved it!
I wrote it there in the comments. In my opinion the live-version of "Sultans" of the Brothers-in-Arms-Tour was the best version of Sultans ever played. Difference to the "Alchemy-Version", which was quite similar was the including of the Saxophone, which added something to the song for me. The original and Withers were brilliant - but for me so much 70ies-Style and the intention of Mark Knopfler to produce a counterpart to Punk, which was so famous in England these days. The 80ies-Versions puts so much more "life" in the song - in my opinion - and how Williams played the song was a big part of it. (Just my opinion, and I have no problem at all, if there are different opinions..)
No discussion about Romeo and Juliet - just perfect played by Sina.
0:25 good drummer even not need a bass drum sound=)
Pick Withers was a brilliant drummer.
To serve the song.
Love this
Do not worry about critisism it just goes to show that people are jealous of your talent. So Sina just keep on doing what your doing.Your video's are magical
The only song that makes me cry every time,...thank you Sina.
Apart from loving this song - As a non-drummer it is hard for me to find words of appreciation for that great performance - I just lift my virtual hat and make a bow... 💖
When I launched my Sultans-of-Swing drum cover some 3 years ago, I started quite a controversy. Check out my video description for details!
In case you want to check my old cover, here you go: ruclips.net/video/_q8s93klams/видео.html
Okey Sina! 😊✌
Controversy?
Nope .. just a 5 Star Performance
I missed that one from you Sina .. it took me back more than a few years 👍😊.
sina-drums te amo :p
Don´t worry, Sina - As big Straits-Fan from the 80ies, I always liked the Williams-Style much more and really loved your playing. And thank you so much for more Straits -and you are brilliant - as always... 🌹🌹🌹
"What can I say? I was young and I needed the money!"
I loved that line. You did great on both songs, don't ever be sorry. I'm listening more often to your covers than I do the originals.
Pick Withers' drum creation for this song was very rudimentary and illustrates how a truly great song does not need much flash from any individual instrument to make it succeed. But Sina somehow adds incredible nuance that really makes the song pop way beyond the original! And she does it in a way that keeps the drums in their place. She is truly talented!
Sina your cover on Romeo and Juliet is as awesome as the song. You are a prodigy and it warms my heart, thank you for sharing
One of the things I love the most about you is that you have the music
taste of a 60 year old ( mine) and the
playing skills of a pro musician (not mine) .thank you for everything that you (and your Dad) do. 🎼🎵🎶🎵❤😊🥁🎸
Soo much talent in a small lady! Thank You.
You bought me with this one. One of my favourites. Great talent.
You play such a big variety of music. Everything you cover is always spot on. Much appreciated
Sina's drum work follows the mood of the song with a sensitive touch just like in the original version of D.S.
I love your music you do a very good job.. On the drums keep rocking my friend your buddy ben Brown from Cincinnati ohio
I hope that RUclips remains available for years to come. I want to be able to show these videos to my daughter when she's older and starts to doubt herself. This is an excellent example of what is possible if you work hard and dedicate yourself. Who knows, by that time we may be in line to see your latest tour by then!
My daily break from the world is to come here to listen to Sina play.
❤️🇺🇸🕊🙏🕊🇺🇸❤️
SINA Doering did it again, she played romeo and Juliet to perfection.her rhythm and timing is impeccable she nailed this song great job 👍👏👍👏❤️
This video by Sina is a wonderful way to learn of a love song I don’t recall ever hearing. My lost for not being familiar with a song having such expressive lyrics by one so heart broken. Sina’s appearance and gently drum playing in a few well placed shadows perfectly complements this song about love. In addition to supporting Sina Drums in other ways, happy I am to again being a channel member; it’s a really great way to support, and further ones enjoyment of her channel. charlie
Saw Dire Straits perform this piece in Boston in 1983 at the Berklee School of Music Theatre. Mark Knoffler in the middle of the stage under a single street lamp playing his National guitar. Sina once again shows her great ability to not just cover the song but play it with the same feeling I remember Mark doing alone on a relatively small stage in Boston just before Dire Straits hit it really big. Well Done Sina!
Sina I love this version of the song. You played it to perfection. In my opinion, you no longer need to post covers. You are no longer an amateur. You are a professional. I still love watching you play. I've watched you technique and your overall musicianship improve over the years. You've always been able to feel the music. I have bought music from you and will again. I'll still watch your covers but, I honestly don't think you need to do them to advance your career.
Don't hear Dire Straits on the radio much anymore. A beautiful song beautifully done. 😀
BEAUTIFUL! There is definitely the soul of some old, great drummer living in this young woman! You can see the appreciation and respect for the music she plays and that every song is someone recording her playing and not just someone being on RUclips like most of the other drummers that have videos on it. This young woman is a GENUINE ARTIST ❣️❣️❣️❣️
Fantastic!! Absolutely unbelievable! What a drummer!!!
Terrific, to my hearing the cymbals are much clearer in these older recordings.👏👏👏👏
"Romeo and Juliet," a tale so well-known,
A timeless story, emotions overthrown,
In the hands of Sina, the drums have grown,
To breathe new life, a rhythm of their own.
With sticks in hand, she takes the stage,
A musical journey, like a timeless page,
Her drumming prowess, a skillful sage,
Bringing Shakespeare's love to a modern age.
The beat, it pulses, like hearts entwined,
As Sina's talent, with passion, is defined,
In every strike, a story is outlined,
"Romeo and Juliet," reimagined and refined.
Through thunderous rolls and cymbal's clash,
She paints their love, like a vivid flash,
With each beat, emotions in a mad dash,
A tribute to the tragic love they stash.
So let us applaud this musical feat,
Where Shakespeare's words and Sina's beat,
In perfect harmony, they both meet,
A rendition of love, both bittersweet.
Sina, You have a Beautiful Drum Kit... And you sure know how to play the Drum Kit!!!!-04/27/2024/Richard Bishop Spartanburg South Carolina 💙💙💙💛💙💙💙
God bless whoever introduced you to the best classic rock and god bless you for getting it in the true experience in which it was intended
We all absolutely love you. So beautiful thank you forever
It's great when you try to stay true to the music but you need to put your own touch in there and be yourself and do what feels right don't listen to the haters they're always going to be there always remember you're awesome Sina
That was perfect Sina do not worry about criscism your performance is magical what a talent you have.Keep on drumming.
The feeling and caring you put into your covers was really evident on this one Sina.....great job.....a visual and audio treat to behold.....your ability is obvious and i am not talking to hear my own voice.....bravo.....
Never really considered how big this song actually was until I listened properly to the music and lyrics. It is now a song I play regularly in the car along with Tunnel of Love (money for nothing album) both songs for me are power hitters.
Your cover version of Romeo and Juliet was lovely to listen to. Keep up the good work 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Miss sina this is one of my favorite bands an you did a fantastic job on this song, your talent as a drummer is fantastic loved it....thank you
My respect for this young woman keeps growing. She never, ever, faila. Just simply outstanding!
Sina, I love the emotion that you play with, you truly love being a percussionist.
Oh my, what a lovely, delicate, regenerating and enlivened cover of this classic song! Bless you, Sina!😶🌫❣
Так свежо на душе стало, вечер перекрасился в мажорные цвета, благодарю!!! ❤️ It became so fresh in my soul, the evening was repainted in major colors, thank you !!! ❤️
I heard Sina play once and that was enough for me to support her. She's worth every penny. This song kills me every time I listen to it, but Mark and Dire Straits can do no wrong. It might be a bio-anthem for anyone whose every been truly in love and lost. It's happened to me twice, and that's twice too many times.
It's the only bill I really like to receive! 😀🥁💸
Dire Straits....this is definitely my favorite. Yeah, yeah....Little Girl nailed it.
One of my favorite Dire Straits songs always reminds me of my wife and I. Sina you just simply amaze me with the talent you have. A truly talented musician seeing your music vids just makes life better. Music is definitely a drug we all need to feel better and you certainly provide that. Thanks for sharing it with all of us.
This version of Romeo and Juliet reaches it's peak at 4:02! Also, love the full/heavy sound of your toms on this one.
4:00 to 4:04 - a classic Sina scene: flashing the brightest of smiles when something that might easily feel wrong works fine, like crashing the cymbals without crashing the song.
Great Job, Sina! You caught the taste and perfection of the original marvellously. It is obvious: Right, you’re older now. And regarding the money? You certainly don’t get it for nothing. - YES, this IS alluding to Juliet’s 2nd snippet of Historic Sina, a true gem: you hammering off the GUITAR intro to “Money For Nothing”. Cool!!!
It looked like she was just waiting for that part and that smile says "yes, I nailed it ".
@@robertreed3424 Right you are, Robert! You can find this kind of reassuring smile throughout her career, for instance in "Woman from Tokyo", "Radar Love" or "Burn".
@@yamamotoscissors4944 This may very well be the case! :-))
Thank you for the time stamp. I was so enamored with the drum work, I missed that fleeting bit of sugar so I went back and watched just for it it. I might have caught it on my 3rd or 4rth time through. It's something I always watch for but if you look away at the wrong moment , it's gone.
Love the ending, it's like you didn't want to stop.
She does that a lot, to show us she ain't fakin' it.....
It’s not easy to capture the subtlety and understated brilliance of Pick Withers. Well done!
Hi sina. I just love your drum playing. You're an inspiration for me. I play guitar and violin and i'm learning drums for having fun but also to develop and accurate rhytms skills. Forget what others said. Keep doing your job. You're awesome!!! Greetings from brazil
Sina, controversies aside, what matters is that your performance is simply wonderful.
Sina, you are so much more than just a drummer! You bring to every performance the connection with the audience that music and the performer was meant to have! And you never fail to bring it!! 👍❤️😎
Was a song that my wife and I fell in love to. You played it so good that my wife and I had tears in our eyes, Thanks again Sina for such a wonderful performance. Bless You for this memory.
This is one of my all time favorite pieces of music. Your smile around the 4:00 Mark is lovely. Thank you.
A beautiful drum cover Sina.
The Dire Straits one of my favorite.
One of my favorite Dire Straits songs. And Sina's playing is rock-solid, as usual.
Your playing is technically amazing, and even more importantly is very soulful and full of love for the music.
Awwwwwh Sina doing dire straits. Isn't she the greatest! I love her, how'd I miss this one. Then she occasionally flashes that beautiful smile. Totally captivating!
Well I 'm not a specialist of the different styles of drumming in Dire Straits, so I will not complain about your way of playing on this tune. To me it sounds excellent and I had great pleasure listening to it !
Wow! Just wow! I’ve been watching you awhile, but truly enjoyed the intricacies of this piece. Fantastic. And thank you for coming out from behind your hair! I can only speak for myself, and while I often will close my eyes while listening to music, the draw of RUclips is watching the performers at their craft. Watching the artist’s skills, including their expression is part of the experience. Whether it is the concentration, or the smile relaying their enjoyment of the music, it adds to the performance. Occasionally I see you flash this little smile of “success”... or maybe just “YES!”, and I find myself smiling as well. You are incredibly talented, but don’t shy from showing YOU.
never change this, it is the very best possible!
I'm with you on this. It's OK as Old Fart. To Enjoy.. Eyes.. Xxoo
Outstanding cover! My favorite part of every video you make is at the end when you try to hide your smile, the smile of satisfaction, knowing you did it very well! You absolutely amaze me with the vast diversity of styles you are able to play with! Thank you for sharing your passion, talents and creativity with all of us. Rock on!
Just one word - Great! Awesome tune, perfect performance, nice video, it's from the best Sina's style. Sina, we are yours Romeos, you are our Juliet. :) But you will live forever with your videos and our love will be with you ! I hope the whole world will love you! Thanks a lot to you and your team.
Omg my favourite song of all time. 😍😍
Thank you very much.
Bob Marley said " One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain " Your game is good , i adore you .
What I like so much about Sina is that she can do it all with the drums ( but, can she cook lol? )…..Thanks Sina you always make ' TGIF ' just another reason to be thankful...
I'm from Russia, from deep Siberia. Since my youth, I love the work of Mark Knopfler. Thank you for reminding me of him. You're a very pretty young lady. I wish you creative success and success in your personal life!!! If you want I will send you a photo of our wonderful magical Siberian nature.
Thank you, Sina, For another beautiful Dire Straits drum cover. I don't believe Romeo and Juliet was as popular in the U.S. as other places in the world but you did an amazing job. As far as Sultans of Swing, In my opinion, it's one of your greatest drum covers. I think you know this, haters are going hate but numbers don't lie and 28M views tell me you gave one outstanding performance!!!
Thank you for bringing us drummers to the for front that we are just as important as any other musicians
As everyone can see, the drums in Romeo and Juliet is very hard. Congratulations Sina!!!! You were perfect in every beat that you played.
Once again a truly outstanding drum cover by Sina, this time with "Romeo And Juliet" one of many top-class Dire Straits classics. And not only that: with Pick Withers, she is taking an extremely deserved tribute to an excellent and wrongly underrated drummer of Melodic Rock. But I think that the time has come to thank all those without whom these outstanding videos would not have been possible. On the one hand there is Sina's dad, whose video work is always a real pleasure, and on the other hand there are the many sponsors mentioned in the credits, without whom the financing of such a video would certainly be much more difficult, if not impossible. For me it is crystal clear: Sina is the best female drummer in Europe!
Just Europe Stefans?
And just female Stefans?
I might add that of the top 30 RUclips drummers only one has more total views and he's been doing it 6 years longer.
Brilliant as ever.
For the record, there was never anything wrong with covering Sultans of Swing in the style of Terry Williams. The drum part on Alchemy is fantastic. Anyone criticizing you for appreciating and emulating that is being silly.
Magnificent rendition, Sina! Again it's hard not to notice your perfect sense of timing with the right accents (or should I call it stick to surface angles of incidence) and the right energy at every strike, it's just perfect and, I believe, not easy to emulate :)
This is obviously a very beautiful song, but I didn't think there was anything special about the drum part. Now I know how wrong I was. There is something wonderful about the way Sina brings new life to these old songs. Thank you!
yeah, always loved the song, never would have given the drums a second thought... but wow. most excellent.
Sometimes - it is difficult to get past what Mr Knopfler is doing - which is so much - but the rest of the band is doing some really important and equally impressive “stuff”. Thank you Sina for all that you do. 💋🍎❤️🎼🥃🍺🌿🥹
@Sina, just amazing your performance. When this wonderful band emerged, you and I weren't even born, however. what is good is eternalized! Congratulations Sina for always showing us through your precious talents with this one 👏👏👏🤛🤜🤞🤞
This, as with all of your covers, is excellent. I must confess that I especially enjoy your continued drumming after the song and the flourish at the end.
Always a Great pleasure listening to your awesome Drumming :) Thanks so much for all your hard work and sharing with us all ! ! !

Sina;
On this one, I forgot you were playing.
Such a beautiful song, it takes my heart.
So immersed in the song... I nearly overlooked how well you did with it.
And I am a fan of yours.
Thanks for laying this one down. It is special to me.
Mark
MS. Sins you're very much appreciated. Your skills as a percussionist are above and beyond. I can see you soul expresses your talent. Congrats. 💘 Tommy Tombstone.
What a wonderful talent you are. Love your big smile!
Well Done! Always pleased to hear you play the drums. You are awesome!!!!
I instantly loved this song the first time I heard it. Seeing it from the perspective of this video illustrates the brilliance of simplicity! Too much new music today lacks this quality. Thank you Sina!
Spot on.
Smooth Sina, real smooth, no way you could mess this up! I just checked out Sultans of Swing again, and I just want to say, I'm no musician, but that was just as awesome as Romeo and Juliet. You are one awesome musician!! Thanks for everything.
Beatiful! Very well done Sina.👍
Your covers mimic my favorites playlist. You must have on old soul. LOL. In my humble opinion this is the the best song Dire Straits ever recorded and I am a lifelong fan of the band and Knopflers solo work.
Thank you Sina! I love this song and you make it absolutely perfect. Hello from Madrid SPAIN
OOOOOOOh Sina, you don't even know how you make my life happier when I'm listening to your music. You're my angel and keep going please, because the world needs someone like you!
Stunning....a fantastic rendition. Very talented lady.
Soooooo.... good. You're a star and you deserve the fruits of your labour. I wish you well kid.
That's one of my most loved songs ever! I saw Mark Knopfler live in Cologne last year, nearly made me cry. Also the song that played when I got together with my girlfriend, which seems rather fitting. Nicely done!
It appears to me by watching your facial expressions and body language that you really enjoyed doing this beautiful song.
Thank you so much for covering it.
Congratulations Sina! Thank you again for your great drum covers and this time for a great tribute to Pick Withers, the co-founder and original drummer of Dire Straits. (.. for some, the story only starts from Money for Nothing and Brothers in Arms, which of course is not true ..) Romeo and Juliet is a really difficult task and typical Pick Withers. The drums almost become part of the melody. Withers succeeds in placing very unique and very musical drum accents on the first 4 albums of the Dire Straits, which are heavily supported by guitar and vocals, and also put a percussive stamp on the pieces. What is special about his playing is that the drums do not provide a basic rhythm in the conventional sense, but rather act in a jazz-oriented, soloistic manner and become an independent part of the melody structure. For the song Sultans of Swing e.g. (see also Wikipedia) Pick Withers developed a very special drum groove, which is characterized by the hi-hat and cymbal work, almost playfully, matching the song theme, between rock and swing. This is very unique in rock music until the end of the 70s and just as with bands like Cream, Deep Purple or The Police an incredible statement for the instrument drums.
After the album Love Over Gold, Pick Withers' musical direction of Dire Straits became too rock-heavy and he left the band to pursue other projects.
Thank you Sina for this great original version of Romeo and Juliet! Keep on drumming!
Dire Straits…how about it, one of my favourite. But there is this song of Santana “Black magic women” which comes to mine mind watching you performing one delightful piece of music after the other accurate at high level. My accent lays in “magic women”, that’s why you enchant me more and more. In the meantime I watch/listen to your clips to relax and reminisce after work. Never bored to repeat. It works incredibly well for me, no other ingredients or therapist are needed. Not sure about an addiction… and if so, what a superbly one, right. Thanks so much Sina.
There should be NO controversy on this one. It's perfect!
It is perfect. However, the defiant little fill at the end is not part of the original track. That part is just Rebel Sina's dig at those Dire Strait Fanboys that down-checked her last time!
Perfect....what does that mean? It was a marvelous song. This cover is marvelous. She almost aways is. But the original....now THAT was perfect. Otherwise, she wouldn't have chosen to cover it.
Whow !!! Absolutely great ! You play with a fine kind of dynamic and emotion and with full heart ! We like it so much ! Congratulation from a fanbase in Germany ! Congratulation for your wonderful work ! Herzlichen Dank ! Du bist SPITZE !!!
Thank you Sina. This was the song I had played at my wifes funeral in 2011 after her suicide. She was bipolar and an awesome artist with a bachelors degree in fine arts. There was no medium of arts she couldn't create in other than music and acting (a degree all of their own). This was the song we both agreed we wanted played at our funeral no matter how old we were. She was only 45. You are so young and so accomplished. Thank you for choosing this song to play.
My condolenses
That. Was. Amazing!
Love that ending.
So did I!
Ditto
A beautiful soothing song, Sina your drumming harmonized perfectly with the music, and I think that's the main point. A cover is no copy, and you are right to play the drum in your own way, which you like it. I like and enjoy your version.
'Romantically' lit, soft blur foreground camera angle is particularly nice. Making it all work together with Sina's great performances is a 3:29 for her dad. Ah hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Sina was a big part of the whole creative process as well. Great job, guys.
Sina's subtlety in her drumming fits this song perfectly. Marvelous work, abetted by excellent videography and sound editing.
I am A drummer aswell but its Great pleasure to watch you..very light ,very pro job...well done!!! regards from Poland!!! :) all the best girl! :)
Ole i think shes absolutely Great amazing musical dummer love it maybe UD like 2 check out Ole Akre ok RUclips too im ok too but i sing play guitat erc
I love how you are always totally involved in every beat in every piece you perform. Fantastic!
Wow, such good control on high hat and perfect rim clicks! 10/10
unforgetable, that smile on 3.59 when she reached out for the cymbol, gives me always a smile/laugh, thanks Sina
Beautiful song and drummer, your skills are so amazing thanks for sharing.
Thumbs up everyone for Sina.
👍❤💋🇺🇸☮
Vielen lieben Dank, Sina.
Absolutely brilliant cover Sina. As a drummer myself, love to watch your technique and confidence when playing. Love this song and you bring a bit extra to the table with this video. Keep it up and good luck with the exams and all you do.
