    Single wedge (vertical/horizontal) splitters are the way to go, at least for me. I rarely use the 4-way on the Ultra as I like to be able to control the size/shape of the pieces, there’s too much scrap/kindling with the multi-wedges for my liking

    • @NeighborlyHomestead
      @NeighborlyHomestead Месяц назад +1

      When you sell kindling, the scrap is welcome!

      @@JoesFirewoodVideos agreed. Single wedge is my go-to method. There is very minimal waste. Theres a lot of crushed/pressed wood debris when using multi wedge splitters.

    Man, watching you split this green, stringy white oak makes me glad I buy mine already split! lol. That's a chore to split by hand...
    Running out of places to put new wood is a good problem to have! Just bought my last load of wood for the year, and seriously underestimated the capacity of my new truck- same length bed, but it's a lot deeper and we stacked it in there, lol. Had to get creative, and rearrange stuff to fit all of it in places it would STAY dry. But: it's money in the bank! And no scrambling to find dry wood in the middle of winter/early spring.
    Just like you, it was in the mid 80s and humid. (because of course it was- I was doing hard labor) Was splitting much of it out of the truck, and was soaked. My hat gave up on trying to keep the sweat out of my eyes. Multiple union breaks were taken, and a couple of liters of water disappeared all sudden like, lol.

    I've seen the Axis and now the Wolfridge splitters run and I like that kind of splitter. You can use them for any size log and they really handle the knotty pieces, too. Keep on splitting! GNI!!!!🤔👍❤️📹😃

  • @AllenFamilyFirewood
    @AllenFamilyFirewood Месяц назад +1

    The verticals will really give ya a work out . Most people don’t realize that with a faster cycle time you go twice as fast trying to keep up with it and ya need twice as many breaks . I like the speed of the 17 vs it’s gona let you keep splitting longer between breaks . I have a few hrs on a vertical and I know at the end of the day I can split just as much wood with a 17 vs as I could with an axis . It’s not about the cycle time it’s about how long a guy can keep up with the machine .

    Watching the verticals run the one thing I don't care for is how much they want to kick the wood out. Seems like it would be a real wrestling match with it. If they designed something to keep the bottom of the log in place like most horizontals already have then I think they would really be awesome.

    Great vid as always Chris. I don't own any splitters. But from the reviews I've seen with you (alone or with Tony or the one from Bert), it seems the EastonMade Axis is a better machine. The big PITA I see is the slow return from the VS if you don't get off the petal fast enough and the pressure needed to push the petal. BUT, either machine would be better than a splitting with a maul. :)
