Fabiana Mendez a lot of people do that. But obviously it's rarely when discussing this type of extreme..
Growing up I had very severe ulcerative colitis. I was diagnosed at 9 and spent at least one month every year in the hospital until I was 16 and had my colon removed. And people, particularly my mom, would *always* preface a complaint with "I know it's not as bad as what you're dealing with, but man my fill-in-the-blank really hurts"
I'd always have to say that they shouldn't look at other people's issues and in turn downplay your own cause you *feel* somebody has it worse. For one you could very sympathetic and you actually are in the worse position. But really, it's STILL your issue, your weight you have to bare regardless of anyone else.
I don't think it's healthy to judge your situation based off how everyone else is. Like, you could almost always find someone with a worse situation.
And everyone needs to vent sometimes. You can't expect to bottle things up because someone else has it worse off

He was a child with horrifically abusive parents. He said that his parents basically didn’t teach him how to be a regular person. They didn’t instill morals and teach right from wrong. A man who locks his daughter in one room for thirteen years is not the kind of person you should be taking advice on life from. Imagine the control their father had over them as kids because they were so fearful of him. He wasn’t going to try to take a stand against him because he probably deeply feared the consequences. It seems that most people who have commented on this video are not aware that Genie is a psuedonym given to her by Susan Curtiss (a linguist and Genie's caretaker at some point). Genie's real name is Susan Wiley.

That's why there was a real up roar in regards to the scientific exploration of Susans life. She became a scientific project, Genie was her research name. A lot of controversy about Susans wellbeing at the time, was it exploitation or really in her best interest. There is a fine line, hence the reason they removed her from the scientists that took care of her.

Yup that's how I understood it to be. BUT there is controversy to that theory about funding cuts. There were also allegations of using her for scientific purposes which had implied in Genie (Susan) was being exploited. My personal views is ethical practices when you hold a professional relationship with a client. Many boundaries were crossed, and no indication of family intervention. There could have been a million and one ways this could have been monitored in the best interest of Genie, and that accountability sits with all parties involved. Foster homes in my opinion is an intervention that is used to avoid real issues, but it doesn't take the issues away. So you're right in that respect. Depending.

The brother can talk and function more normally than Susan (Genie), because he was born into the family before their grandmother passed. It was after their father's mother had passed, that he withdrew completely, and forced his wife and son to ignore the poor child, never speak to her or anything. When the father went to the store one day... that was when the mother... Irene... ran from the house, and brought attention to their situation. If not for that one single opportunity, at that time... "Genie" probably would have ended up dying in that room.

There is a long article about him but in german. Yes, it is true, he lived with the Grandmother. He was tortured by the father all the years after her death, while Genie was isolated in her room. The house had three rooms: In one lived Genie, one was a shrine after the Grandmother's dead and in the third lived father, mother, son. The father slept on a couch, son and mother had to sleep all the years while sitting on a chair at the table.

It would have been better if he'd never been indoctrinated with religion. His father was the one to blame, and he himself didn't let anyone down. Religion provided an external father who didn't want to protect him, then gave him a reason for unwarranted guilt. My sons were left to make their own minds up, whilst receiving religious education in primary school, and both, thankfully, thought the notion of a god quite ridiculous, being of very high intelligence. I'm glad I didn't poison their young minds as my own was.

Having seen a few videos and read a few articles about the case of Susan "Genie" Wiley, it frustrates me that her brother John, five years older than her, didn't raise the alarm with teachers at his school (and thereby get police and community services intervention). Through school attendance he was the only person in the household guaranteed regular access to responsible adults without Clark Wiley being around. However, I can understand why he didn't. He too was brutalised and terrorised by the father, and kids in those days probably weren't aware that they could in the first instance seek help in such a situation through their school.

    • @SheltonWshelton
      @SheltonWshelton 8 лет назад +32

Furthermore as stated in his interview "At that point in life I didn't know what to expect." He was to young to know what family was supposed to be. Family is something we are taught. We are taught how a father treats his children, we are taught how we should be treated and how we should treat others. He didn't raise alarm because he did not know it wasn't normal. That's the tragedy of human society. In most cases of abuse children never speak up until it's too late because they never knew any better until they are taught differently.

She was able to learn words, and associate them with objects, but she wasn't able to learn grammar or speak sentences to communicate with human beings. It was just too late for her to learn. In video of her, however, she seems to express a lot of happiness, which is awesome. I just want to give her a big hug and help her to understand it's not her fault that her father was a horrible monster.

Scorch428 Yeah, she came out when she was 13 - still developing age. I meant what if she had stayed in until the age where the mind stops developing full stop. But yeah, she seems like a really nice person, imagine if she had been able to reach her full potential. I wouldn't wish what that young girl went through on my worst enemy.

She can be happy, and she can be sad. But she can't think the simple thought "I am happy" or "I am sad". Without the capacity for language, she lives in a primal world of emotion and unorganized (in her mind) impulses and instincts. So sad.

I do wonder how many people commenting "he's not descriptive" enough (or... emotional, which, is basically what they're saying) realize what generation he's from... he wouldn't delve into "talk talk talking," discuss about how "bad" it was, or make extreme physical gestures to show the hurt... he's supposed to be "a man," etc. It's like in those old timey movies, you'll never see the guy say, "I don't know what to do"... even if he doesn't. He's not going to say much, but that doesn't mean he doesn't care.

He was badly abused by his mom I've read so he hated her and he also hated noise so Children to him were just annoying. He hated when they made noise at all so he would punish Genie severely to put the fear in her to not make any sound.

+badboybaldy1 He was treated just as poorly as Genie was. The difference is that his grandmother intervened while he was an infant. Genie didn't have anyone intervene until it was too late.
His father forced his wife to keep their son quiet as much as possible, and as a result he was slow to develop and late to walk and to talk. When he was four, his paternal grandmother grew concerned about her son's increasing instability and her grandson's developmental delays. She decided to take over her grandson's care for several months, and he made good progress with her

Elliottsrode He passed away in 2011. I read that some place else. When I came back to reply to your comment, I noticed what is written in the description box: John Gray Wiley (March 11 1952-February 18 2011). She is still in California according to various articles I read. It appears John passed away in Ohio.

Elliottsrode I couldn't agree with you more. I have such mixed feelings after watching this. On one hand, it must be a blessing for her to know that there are people out there who only want to help, not to hurt. On the other hand, the showed her what an entirely different world she could have, and then that was all stripped from her. I guess all we can do is hope and pray that she is with a well qualified, caring and nurturing staff.
~~My best to you and yours, Elliott.

Elliottsrode Absolutely. And when you add to that the fact that there are entirely too many people having children that aren't fit to raise them, it's no wonder this world is going to hell in a handbasket. :o( And it's been going on and getting progressively worse since the beginning of time. This story is a prime example.
