I feel like he is downsizing the atrocities he went through. Like sort of feeling like less because his sister had it worse. I can't believe people like their father exist, I am honestly afraid of the world.
Fabiana Mendez a lot of people do that. But obviously it's rarely when discussing this type of extreme.. Growing up I had very severe ulcerative colitis. I was diagnosed at 9 and spent at least one month every year in the hospital until I was 16 and had my colon removed. And people, particularly my mom, would *always* preface a complaint with "I know it's not as bad as what you're dealing with, but man my fill-in-the-blank really hurts" I'd always have to say that they shouldn't look at other people's issues and in turn downplay your own cause you *feel* somebody has it worse. For one you could very sympathetic and you actually are in the worse position. But really, it's STILL your issue, your weight you have to bare regardless of anyone else. I don't think it's healthy to judge your situation based off how everyone else is. Like, you could almost always find someone with a worse situation. And everyone needs to vent sometimes. You can't expect to bottle things up because someone else has it worse off
Fabiana Mendez the horrible part is people much worse than his father exist if you can even imagine that. We have to be good people on an individual level, that doesn’t mean being naive or stupid just be decent.
But his downsizing shows you just how badly he was damaged too. To him living in that house was normal because that’s all he knew. He can only evaluate that it was wrong after trying to be his own person, but you can see he still hasn’t been able to overcome his upbringing enough to be shocked at his sister’s treatment.
Considering his own obvious neglect he sounds like a reflective and genuinely thankful person. I hope he finds love, happiness, truth and acceptance in his life.
Unfortunately, he didn't. He could not live a normal life. He had managed to survive, but he never had any help. He watched his Grandmother die, his father said he was guilty (it was an car accident and he was a little boy) and tortured him. It was heartbreaking to read, poor poor man.
It all depends on if you KNOW that ur family is messed up. If you know that its messed up you start to learn how to see the abnormalities and as you learn you are able to see recognise when you perform those abnormalities and it allows you to reign it in, in yourself; and you'll never fully heal, but you can make some scar tissue and close the wound.
This poor guy. As a linguist I studied his sister's case and was appalled at the chaos surrounding her emotional well being. John had a horrific start to life also. Some people just should not be parents.
Conamara Colm once a child suffers such serious abuse...they should just remove their wombs and men should be snipped. You don't deserve a 2nd chance.I see it over and over again. Some people have to 8 kids but their first borns were removed from their care, what's makes you think they can look after 7.Get involved people....get more social workers.Pay them decent salaries,so that they can dedicate their time to sift out these monsters and give our children a chance in life.
Shawn Dayvis sorry you had to go through that.So hard being a mom.I can imagine you don't have the financial and emotional support that things can be very difficult.Just wish these kids can be saved sooner or later. She is over 50 now and still living in a home. What a sad life that must be.
Ilhaam Hartley ....it was very unfortunate the state kept giving us back to her even though she kept drinking and drugging and prostituting for her own needs, she certainly didn't spend any money on food, unfortunately she was a monster,
John Wiley was a forgotten victim. His life was tragic, littered with alcohol abuse and familial problems. He carried a great deal of shame about Susan and rarely discussed the past. He last saw his sister in 1982, when he ventured back to Temple City to say good-bye to his past. John Wiley passed away on February 18, 2011, in Urbana, Ohio, aged 58, he never told even the closest of his new extended family about his early ordeals. Not all people with bad lives commit suicide, some have hope that it will get better or they just don't mess around with things like that (i'm not trying to be offensive to people with self harm problems) but well thats it its that simple
@@iamgriff Is it so? Honestly that fallacy you spit out doesn't deserve a well thought reply. Judging by your comment, I don't think your brain can compute logic.
@@gabriellebragg7097 blah, blah, blah. nothing but seething emotion. not a single fact relating to the topic. i hope you make a sandwich better than you debate.
Yes exactly to me he was the most interesting case of study!! If he really went and lived a normal life being a decent human, then what an amazing human he was x
Its amazing how massively people can screw up their kids on into future generations. One bad parent and countless lives can be ruined. His horrible father irrecoverably ruined any chance of Susan aka Genie having a normal life, John drifted through life and was basically invisible to society and the one kid I read that he had suffered from her own issues and was on drugs. It is the biggest honor and responsibility to raise a child and some people should NEVER be given that.
He didn't want kids. Back then abortion wasn't legal. He froze their first daughter to death in the garage. I strongly suspect he was a psychopath. His strong aversion to noise, barking like a dog, beating his family, torturing his children.
The comments here have been so kind and understanding. It's terrible to be in an abusive family and be the less abused one. You feel guilty for being treated less harshly and you feel like nothing because of the abuse and neglect you experienced. It's a knife that cuts both ways.
I would not 100 % say less abused. The guilt feelings of not feeling like you helped the other person is self abuse. It is set in by the monster in charge.I always hope for self forgiveness for all.Because we are hardest on ourselves than others ever could be.The sad thing is that they likely could not help the more abused anyway. The monster quite often punishes more when someone tries to help them.Every day is a gift to make the best of.Freedom is finding your own peace and contentment no matter how small or big that it is.
I wish people wouldn't be so hard in him, he suffered through the same tumultuous upbringing, eventually ran away from it, found God as his peace, what else could you expect the guy to do? He's just as much a victim.
Ametama you do realise parents scare the kids to make them not talk about the abuse at home or go to the police.. my own parents abused me and when I said I would tell the police when my friends told me people can call the police on their parents for abuse You know what they said They said go ahead Police will put you in jail for being naughty etc not us And I believed that back then cuz I was young and naive So based on this I conclude John is innocent
Ametama from the story given, it looked like the whole family was abused including genie’s mother. It seemed like genie got the worst. All those years genie’s brother was abused, he probably mentioned it, and it was overlooked.
I grew up with an abusive father. Do you know when I realized I could have done something to escape? I finally realize it at 19 Years old. I'm 21 now. When you know nothing else than what your abusive parents are saying, of course you are only going to believe it. You've made your roots and your values system on this.
Ametama hi, I realize I’m replying two years later but what you said was so profoundly ignorant that I couldn’t ignore it. Do you really think he could have done that? He was a child with horrifically abusive parents. He said that his parents basically didn’t teach him how to be a regular person. They didn’t instill morals and teach right from wrong. A man who locks his daughter in one room for thirteen years is not the kind of person you should be taking advice on life from. Imagine the control their father had over them as kids because they were so fearful of him. He wasn’t going to try to take a stand against him because he probably deeply feared the consequences. You have to look at this from his perspective at the time. What the fuck could he do?
What a strong human being this guy was. Imagine having no one to speak to until you get to your teens and run away, that must have been so scary, but obviously more scary to stay. Everything he learned for himself and achieved he should have been so proud because he went and did that himself. R.I.P John ❤
Misses Es Most of the scientists who were involved in her case were caring, so it’s not fair to say they all “coldly studied” her. Without continued therapy, her spoken language did, in fact, suffer. Apparently she does communicate through sign and has been happy in a nurturing environment in more recent years. I hope that is still true.
Although many scientists were using her, she was in a safe haven getting the care and contact from so many people. Susan Curtis genuinely cared and wanted the best for Genie, as i'm sure some of the other carers did. Whats most saddening is that her father took the easy way out, and that her mother received custody of her again, weeks later for her to go into foster care. As if she hadn't been physically and mentally abused enough. So upsetting.
Even though she did get care for a number of years, by the early 80s, funding ran out, she was moved to poor asylum housing, in which she regressed very much so. By her 27th birthday, psychologists and linguists who attended her birthday described her having the mindless dull gaze of a cow, and were heartbroken to see the state she was in. Many of those who wanted to care for her simply couldnt get in contact due to her being a ward of LA county. Source: The Guardian
This poor man was abused as well and was withdrawn from the world of knowledge like Genie, but not in such harsh circumstances. Their parents should have been locked up and the key thrown away. Some people have no right or buisness to be parents.
+Spike 1984 The father killed himself once Genie was found and the mother was blind and victim to the father's abuse as well. I wouldn't give her any parent of the year awards and can't say she is completely innocent but you can't put all the blame on her, the father was the main problem.
@@CazRaX Yes her blindness combined with crazy husband meant she couldn't do much besides sneaking in at night to feed her daughter, that too was supposedly risky because the husband would beat her
The mother could have snuck out told the police, the mother could have given her brother a note secretly, her mother should have known something was fucked up when she started to get beaten (before her vision was taken away).
SayaKuro12 His parents had probably brainwashed him into thinking what they were doing to his sister was normal. They must not have taught him what was really right from wrong, but what they wanted him to believe.
@@smellamyblake8352 Yes and the wife also was blind because of cataract, which made it difficult for her to do anything against it and this was during the 1970s
I've read about this poor man that his father would deliberately hit his crotch area as a child to punish him and he said that "I'm surprised I actually was able to have children" That man (the father) was seriously a sick bastard, but effectively a coward who killed himself than to face the world for his action
I guarantee there’s indeed a very special place in the darkest, and most indescribably gruesome regions of hell specifically reserved for completely irredeemable monsters like him.
Sadly, his daughter Pamela L. Wiley Fraley died one year after John passed away...Dec 2012 aged 32. She is survived by her two daughters Summer and Selina Fraley.
I had no idea he had a family, I know starting a family isn’t everything but I’m relieved his father’s abuse didn’t have an effect on his fertility, he seemed so thoughtful and smart, I’m sure he raised a good family.
@@biomutant1468 Breaking the cycle of abuse is a big honor. Apparently, his father also came from f*cked up backgrounds > Nothing comparable to GENIE though
John you seem like a precious person...you have compassion..I hope you get Counseling ...all it means is someone to talk to. There are people in this world that would love to help ....you are not alone in being from a sad and sick home....God Bless you John...
I feel incredibly bad for him because he was essentially abused physically, mentally, and sexually by his father and he never saw justice, even he downplays his abuse, i can imagine he might’ve felt guilty to an extend, he died without seeing justice.
@@Aivottajareading in between the lines. fathers mother was a prostitute, probably has a very skewed perception on s3x. genie would openly masturb@te infront of others and often tried to get older men involved, there were a few other things I read in on the wiki that hints at her sexual abuse. I hate to say it but the father forced john to partake in her beatings, it could’ve went farther than that- likely causing a lot of immense guilt. there is no solid evidence but their father was an absolute monster and I don’t think it’d be out of character for him to do that. edit; also forgot to mention the father took a lot of enjoyment in mutilating johns private parts, binding him to a chair and beating his testicles with a board. so yeah, even if he wasn’t legally charged I think the evidence says enough.
His eyes are haunting. He never learned how to feel. What little feeling he had, he shut down in order to survive. There is a window of development for emotion as well as language.
Oh well that is not my problem. i think you should focus on other things besides my reactions on you tube. maybe go out more, and give your loved ones a hugg, befor u know it they are gone, and you wish you could hold them one more time.
its so sad to see the last documentary on Genie. She was passed from foster home to foster home as soon as the grant $ ran out...Im not saying the research and helpers and skilled dr's were in it for the $ but somehow she got lost in the cracks and it wasn't really about her any longer. I cannot understand how a society could return Genie to her mother. It was very evident her mother needed professional help as well...mentally. Genie required extreme care & patience...her mother could barely look after herself... the system really failed this precious 'jewel' of a little girl ????? May God grant Genie a paradise with Him in Heaven !
Thankfully God has a specially prepared place for her. God didn't fail her. The people entrusted to caring for her failed, and will answer for their selfishness. I will look forward to meeting her in paradise, as we are close in age. I cannot wait to hug her for about ten thousand years or so.
The system had no right to give that poor girl back to her abusive mother. She was being cared for the first time in her life, and that was taken from Her as well.
J Man Only in one eye I felt bad for her at first too but the fact she took her daughter away from people who could actually help her made me neutral and not wanting to feel bad for her anymore
The Abuse he and his sister endured, its great to see him in the word, looks great, seems smart and articulate,,I could not imagine,,breaks my heart that they and others go through atrocities,,may God Bless You and Hold You Tight!!!
@@mylifeinanutshell6931Cycle of abuse, I think you guys should take what is portrayed on camera with a grain of salt. Behind closed doors he likely could’ve still been dealing with his trauma and perpetuating that cycle. I think being forced to partake in the abuse of Genie (stated in the wiki) whether it was physical and/or (perhaps) sexual has likely caused permantent damage to his psyche.
God was not there for him or Genie. Stop talking out of your ass, he isn’t wrong to feel abandoned by God. If this was “Gods Plan” then he’s a piece of shit and I don’t want to worship a demon like that anyways.
This is so sad. I can't believe they could just ignore him. He was being abused too, and in the long run, Genie's story ended sadly too because a lot of them were just using her.
I really hope this man finds peace and happiness. I cannot begin to understand what it felt like to live in that house. Horrifying, psychotic, and pee your pants fear.
I get that but his sister'S brain didn't develop dude. I'm sure they both got equal abuse but his sister got more neglected, locking her up and not developing her.
he went to school... he had teachers to teach him how to think, so his brain it s good, he should took care of the sister. he really don t care about her....
The type of abuse that people like him and many others have endured in their upbringing either turns them into the monster that was the cause of all the hurt in the first place or it turns them into the kindest and sweetest souls to ever live. It aint hard to tell which one this guy turned into

@Z0Z33KY Having addiction issues doesn’t make someone a bad person though or an abuser, a lot of times it’s just because they’re deeply hurt themselves and given all he’s been through I can’t really blame him for being an alcoholic
This story is horrible not only because of the abuse itself, but mainly because she never fully recovered. I just wish there was a way to revert time and change this. We lost someone we shouldn't have.
It seems that most people who have commented on this video are not aware that Genie is a psuedonym given to her by Susan Curtiss (a linguist and Genie's caretaker at some point). Genie's real name is Susan Wiley.
That's why there was a real up roar in regards to the scientific exploration of Susans life. She became a scientific project, Genie was her research name. A lot of controversy about Susans wellbeing at the time, was it exploitation or really in her best interest. There is a fine line, hence the reason they removed her from the scientists that took care of her.
Yup that's how I understood it to be. BUT there is controversy to that theory about funding cuts. There were also allegations of using her for scientific purposes which had implied in Genie (Susan) was being exploited. My personal views is ethical practices when you hold a professional relationship with a client. Many boundaries were crossed, and no indication of family intervention. There could have been a million and one ways this could have been monitored in the best interest of Genie, and that accountability sits with all parties involved. Foster homes in my opinion is an intervention that is used to avoid real issues, but it doesn't take the issues away. So you're right in that respect. Depending.
Awww, if i was an Adult when they were kids i would give them the love they deserve and the inspiration they needed to explore the world, and enjoy life. Sad........ People need to follow rules or restrictions before having children.
It would be nice if there was more information on John Wiley's story. Going simply from information about Genie, to watching this video I can't help but think "Your sister had it much worse. You can talk and function." Does anyone know if there is more information about his side of the story?
The brother can talk and function more normally than Susan (Genie), because he was born into the family before their grandmother passed. It was after their father's mother had passed, that he withdrew completely, and forced his wife and son to ignore the poor child, never speak to her or anything. When the father went to the store one day... that was when the mother... Irene... ran from the house, and brought attention to their situation. If not for that one single opportunity, at that time... "Genie" probably would have ended up dying in that room.
Shannon Halverson There is a long article about him but in german. Yes, it is true, he lived with the Grandmother. He was tortured by the father all the years after her death, while Genie was isolated in her room. The house had three rooms: In one lived Genie, one was a shrine after the Grandmother's dead and in the third lived father, mother, son. The father slept on a couch, son and mother had to sleep all the years while sitting on a chair at the table.
+Chloe Simpson He was treated just as poorly as Genie was. The difference is that his grandmother intervened while he was an infant. Genie didn't have anyone intervene until it was too late. His father forced his wife to keep their son quiet as much as possible, and as a result he was slow to develop and late to walk and to talk. When he was four, his paternal grandmother grew concerned about her son's increasing instability and her grandson's developmental delays. She decided to take over her grandson's care for several months, and he made good progress with her
He went through a hell more severe than most can imagine going through. I think he can't help but feel that way because all the sympathy love and support goes to genie because her case obviously being even worse...but he is a forgotten victim. He still had dealt with a lot of the same torture and abuse but from his perspective nobody cares. He received no help or attention so it's a natural feeling. He surely loves his sister and feels horrible for her. He's just a hurt soul who is in need...RIP to him.
+jehouse He was treated just as poorly as Genie was. The difference is that his grandmother intervened while he was an infant. Genie didn't have anyone intervene until it was too late. He obviously isn't aware of how tragic her story ended up being, (with the doctors who loved her being taken out of her life, and the foster homes she endured) what he does know is that she had a whole team of people working with her and rooting for her success. He had nobody to guide him or love him.
jehouse you should have gotten the most likes on your comment but it goes to show how cruel people think, they hate this guy when he was definitely an uneducated person himself and I don't know how he coped, I believe he didn't go to visit his sister because it brought back more negative memories than he could handle. He's human, what do people expect?!?
It's not that he's begging for sympathy!! Come on people!! Stop being so cruel!! This man was uneducated on life and went thru torture in alot of ways like his sister! He had to hide a secret that meant he had to hide his thoughts and comments from EVERYONE including his parents!! He hurt Everytime his father neglected the sister and tortured her behind closed doors, he was there too! You cannot think of his situation because you never lived it! I'm glad they all got help and found support and he actually found a LIFE, I'm happy for him!
he is at least able to talk and live a normal life , Genie did not have so much luck , lets not forget she was abandoned in a room on her own with no communication whatsoever , for 13 years of her young precious life , she could not even talk , i think she was far more neglected than he ever wasd
Ouch my heart 💔. That poor man; he is the true definition of resilience. And the way he flopped from God letting him down, to him letting God down; I felt that. I hope he is living his best life rn.
It would have been better if he'd never been indoctrinated with religion. His father was the one to blame, and he himself didn't let anyone down. Religion provided an external father who didn't want to protect him, then gave him a reason for unwarranted guilt. My sons were left to make their own minds up, whilst receiving religious education in primary school, and both, thankfully, thought the notion of a god quite ridiculous, being of very high intelligence. I'm glad I didn't poison their young minds as my own was.
@vixen4905 sometimes believing in god is the only thing that can give people hope in rough times, for example there’s been hundreds of thousands probably millions of people who have gotten sober and saved their lives from finding religion or spirituality. I’m not exactly a religious person myself but I’m not going to knock someone if it has brought happiness into their lives
He was a lot stronger than he knew. Honestly an awesome person, and it's so sad he ever wondered if he failed God. So many of the "less abused" siblings grow up and downplay all that happened while keeping their parents on a pedestal - and then continue to blame the scapegoated sibling(s) and/or they become abusers themselves.
How many hours of footage does ABC News have from this meeting with John Wiley? Why have we, to date, seen only this minute-and-a-half of it? John comes off as a simple yet insightful man. I want to know about his memories of walking into that room. He's said (by some accounts) that he never questioned it. I want to hear him remember that home.
where is she today this story is very old.I am praying for her..god be with this soul.she needs to be taught about our father in heaven and our Lord and savior...god be with her always
+Cindy Leidy from what I understood her mother had custody or was legal guardian of her and I think she is now in a home for people with mental illnesses somewhere in or near Los Angeles, California. Her mother no longer wanted her to see all these psychologist and it was a big ol' battle. Again, this might not be totally accurate but yea.
I think the Father had some mental disorders as well, since he "hated sound" this is one symptom of many problems. But also, it let's you be thankful for your parents and your children. What an inspiration John could be to help people. God's way is a way of peace and Grace. I hope John finds him. John 3:16.
Great post Stevphanie, my childhood was a cinerella story as compared. And I spent the first 4 years of my life in a hospital. My mother is an angel, God broke the mold. Its obvious the father had mental disorders, its too bad that children had to suffer because of it.
I really do think that all the horrific abuse he inflicted on his children and wife had much more to do with the fact that he was indeed a very toxic and corrupt person given his overall character. rather than just having serious mental disorders.
I read somewhere that he had extreme ptsd and flashbacks from being in WW1 and since he was 70 when he died his age would have lined up. He probably had way deeper issues on top of that but he was insane.
This poor but Brave Man...Suffered as his Sister Did. Who knows the " guilt" he may have felt ALL of His LIFE- Unable/ SCARED To Help his Sister!!.I too was Severely Abused And Neglected ..by BOTH parents. It has effected my entire Adulthood....( Not being able to understand that Men and Women Are supposed to Be Kind...And trustworthy. I Feel This Mans Pain. 😢
Ametama are you stupid. He was abused as well and he was a CHILD. I would completely understand you having that opinion about his mother that was an adult and allowed both of her children to be abused.
Ametama, if you have never been in a situation like Genie's brother was you could not understand why he didn't call the police. It's just not that simple, he was a child himself.
i hope John Wiley never lets the effects of what he experienced and saw in those years effect him in a negative way.. he is also a victim and been through alot himself.. bless ❤
It seems like she has inner beauty in her heart that attracted all people who treated her, so was everyone who saw her videos This beauty has to be cared of Her story made some human cruelness appear in a shameful image, even in people who are supposed to care her with most love
Being atrocious to your own children, while thinking that you are actually protecting them is horrible! I don't hate but pity the father. He seems to have certain serious medical condition. The mother should have tried to save children from him. But, may be she never realised what the circumstances could be.
I feel for you and your family, bro. God didn't let you down: the world did. Momma never said it would be easy. I was horrendously abused as well, though not to this degree. I'm glad you escaped and have a life.
Having seen a few videos and read a few articles about the case of Susan "Genie" Wiley, it frustrates me that her brother John, five years older than her, didn't raise the alarm with teachers at his school (and thereby get police and community services intervention). Through school attendance he was the only person in the household guaranteed regular access to responsible adults without Clark Wiley being around. However, I can understand why he didn't. He too was brutalised and terrorised by the father, and kids in those days probably weren't aware that they could in the first instance seek help in such a situation through their school.
Furthermore as stated in his interview "At that point in life I didn't know what to expect." He was to young to know what family was supposed to be. Family is something we are taught. We are taught how a father treats his children, we are taught how we should be treated and how we should treat others. He didn't raise alarm because he did not know it wasn't normal. That's the tragedy of human society. In most cases of abuse children never speak up until it's too late because they never knew any better until they are taught differently.
Will Pugh-Calotte you don't raise alarms or speak about abuse in the home as a child. I was 32 years old before I even told my mother what happened when I was 4 years old to six years old. You just don't talk. the one abused always feels like they have done the wrong thing not the abuser.
Will Pugh-Calotte did you read what was done to him. If your dad sat with a shotgun on his lap, pointed at you...and beat you senseless, would you say a word. No because it causes mental illness. Educate yourself on the facts a f psychosis of abuse.
I wonder, if Genie was kept in isolation until she was of adult age, about 18-20 when the mind stops developing, when the social worker found her, would she have learned anything at all about the world, even words etc.? How would she react when the therapists showed her the outside world?
www.dailymotion.com/video/x3pmezz Here's the link to the full documentary if u still care. she was in isolation for 13 years but her story didn't have that great of an ending.
She was able to learn words, and associate them with objects, but she wasn't able to learn grammar or speak sentences to communicate with human beings. It was just too late for her to learn. In video of her, however, she seems to express a lot of happiness, which is awesome. I just want to give her a big hug and help her to understand it's not her fault that her father was a horrible monster.
Scorch428 Yeah, she came out when she was 13 - still developing age. I meant what if she had stayed in until the age where the mind stops developing full stop. But yeah, she seems like a really nice person, imagine if she had been able to reach her full potential. I wouldn't wish what that young girl went through on my worst enemy.
She can be happy, and she can be sad. But she can't think the simple thought "I am happy" or "I am sad". Without the capacity for language, she lives in a primal world of emotion and unorganized (in her mind) impulses and instincts. So sad.
I do wonder how many people commenting "he's not descriptive" enough (or... emotional, which, is basically what they're saying) realize what generation he's from... he wouldn't delve into "talk talk talking," discuss about how "bad" it was, or make extreme physical gestures to show the hurt... he's supposed to be "a man," etc. It's like in those old timey movies, you'll never see the guy say, "I don't know what to do"... even if he doesn't. He's not going to say much, but that doesn't mean he doesn't care.
Does anyone know where she stays now...???? I've never been so broken over story like this one... It makes you question everything you know about sympathy.
1:30 Maybe he allowed this because he would have never found him without it. Also a lot of treasure in heaven is waiting for him now...hope everything turns out fine

So anyone who’s here now, I’m trying to understand how Clark Wiley’s upbringing was. Can anyone find any articles on his childhood? I want to understand why he treated his children so badly.
He was badly abused by his mom I've read so he hated her and he also hated noise so Children to him were just annoying. He hated when they made noise at all so he would punish Genie severely to put the fear in her to not make any sound.
Why does no one mention that Genie had a sister before she was born who died of hypothermia from being placed in a shed outside because Clark Wiley couldn't stand her crying at night?
was this video story about him or he's poor sister ? yes it seem he was going thru some problems to but i do feel this is cut so much from the whole story ... not right to post 1.50sec of some ones life and judgements ... but does seem Genie went thru a lot more then he did ...bless them very sad

When I came back to reply to your comment, I noticed what is written in the description box: John Gray Wiley (March 11 1952-February 18 2011). She is still in California according to various articles I read. It appears John passed away in Ohio.
Jaime Browne I wish I lived closer I would take her and give her a true home, with lots of love and compassion, she was learning! she was happy until they started putting her in foster homes who treated her horribly!
Elliottsrode I couldn't agree with you more. I have such mixed feelings after watching this. On one hand, it must be a blessing for her to know that there are people out there who only want to help, not to hurt. On the other hand, the showed her what an entirely different world she could have, and then that was all stripped from her. I guess all we can do is hope and pray that she is with a well qualified, caring and nurturing staff. ~~My best to you and yours, Elliott.
Elliottsrode Absolutely. And when you add to that the fact that there are entirely too many people having children that aren't fit to raise them, it's no wonder this world is going to hell in a handbasket. :o( And it's been going on and getting progressively worse since the beginning of time. This story is a prime example.
No. Unfortunately the time he visited her was in the 80s. Even though it was his fathers commands I think he has a lot of guilt in regards to how he treated Genie. Probably doesn’t want to be reminded of his trauma.
Very disturbing story of 3 lives affected, in one way or another, by the tyrant father. Have read/watched Genies story before. Both children have been failed in this case. Great article in the links about Johns story.
I thought it was 4? Didn’t they have 2 babies prior that died due to neglect? Social services been shit since the start, wiki even states the doctors noticed she was suffering from malnutrition when they use to bring her for checkups, I believe she was around 11 months. Of course they turn a blind eye, so many times this poor girl could’ve been rescued.
If they really cared for her why did they abandon her after the funding ends? When there is funding and attention everyone rushed to be her foster parents, but when it ended so did the foster parents hip. Shame on these unethical physicians and scientists.
Genie's mother sued the research team and they were no longer allowed to have any contact with her. Even to today. So it's not that they stopped care its the stupid justice system that cut genie away from the support she had
Elaine Cochrane The father thought the girl was retarded when she was about two so from that time until she was 13 she was locked in a room and tied to a toilet. The father beat her if she made noise so she was 13 and unable to talk or walk well
He was treat relatively normally. Genie was labeled as mildly retarded when young which her dad took to heart and abused her. John was "normal" so didn't add much to the documentary
Tiegan Eaton John did go through a lot of abuse. He still went to school and everything, but he suffered from many beatings and was never allowed to speak without permission in his own home. He was constantly threatened by his father.
+Gerop So in fairness it does make sense that he was left out of Genie's story. As far as his life goes; there are literally millions of people who grew up like that. It's sad, but it's the truth. Genie really was unique. And imo way more severely damaged by her neglectful, hateful even, parents.
+Tiegan Eaton He was treated just as poorly as Genie was. She decided to take over her grandson's care for several months, and he made good progress with her
+Ani Vai most outlets decided to leave him alone because of what he went through. They didn't want to being him down by making him relive the atrocities he experienced. It wouldn't be fair to him.
Genies mother sued the researchers. Susan Curtiss actually wanted to be her legal guardian and already set up a trust fund of ~$8000. She wasn't allowed to meet Genie due to her mother and after her mother passed away, Curtiss has tried but not located her since.
there were indeed women who had worked with genie as well, the men were there to help and also to do their job, just because there were men doesn't mean they took advantage of her. which they did not, they loved her everyone did and does. As for the other questions I do not know the answer too.
I feel like he is downsizing the atrocities he went through. Like sort of feeling like less because his sister had it worse. I can't believe people like their father exist, I am honestly afraid of the world.
definitely!! but what happened to his traumatizing and valid too. he should never feel like he has to compare trauma to his sister.
never be afraid. use your knowledge to make a better world
Fabiana Mendez a lot of people do that. But obviously it's rarely when discussing this type of extreme..
Growing up I had very severe ulcerative colitis. I was diagnosed at 9 and spent at least one month every year in the hospital until I was 16 and had my colon removed. And people, particularly my mom, would *always* preface a complaint with "I know it's not as bad as what you're dealing with, but man my fill-in-the-blank really hurts"
I'd always have to say that they shouldn't look at other people's issues and in turn downplay your own cause you *feel* somebody has it worse.

I am surprised at how normal this man appears and am relieved that he has feelings for his sister. He was also a victim of his monster father.

Conamara Colm shouldn't we as humans beings do more? More for seeing neglected children and adults?
Conamara Colm once a child suffers such serious abuse...they should just remove their wombs and men should be snipped. You don't deserve a 2nd chance.I see it over and over again. Some people have to 8 kids but their first borns were removed from their care, what's makes you think they can look after 7.Get involved people....get more social workers.Pay them decent salaries,so that they can dedicate their time to sift out these monsters and give our children a chance in life.
Ilhaam Hartley .....yes , my mom had 6 of us and she should have had her tubes sniped along time ago...she was awful

I think he’s dead now 😔
No he’s dead and sadly lived a Miserable life
Yes exactly to me he was the most interesting case of study!!
It is the biggest honor and responsibility to raise a child and some people should NEVER be given that.
gshunw cant argue that
Can't argue ptofound
Ms.gshunw I do so agree. Children are not a human right to own. Children are privileges. Precious, valuable privileges that are too, too easy to lose.
Also his daughter died because of drug overdose, sad!
Ametama you do realise parents scare the kids to make them not talk about the abuse at home or go to the police.. my own parents abused me and when I said I would tell the police when my friends told me people can call the police on their parents for abuse
You know what they said
They said go ahead
Police will put you in jail for being naughty etc not us
And I believed that back then cuz I was young and naive
So based on this I conclude John is innocent
I’ve convinced my sister that I was doctor when I was 6. Kids will believe anything
I'm so sorry John. I hope you can find the peace in the after life that you were so wrongfully denied on Earth. RIP

What a strong human being this guy was. Imagine having no one to speak to until you get to your teens and run away, that must have been so scary, but obviously more scary to stay. One of the most upsetting stories I've ever read. So sad. Really wish that she is happy, wherever in Los Angeles she resides.

@@misseses9091 theres been nothing on her since the year 2000 and back then she was said to be happy.

Jennifer Myers ROFLMAO. Ohh, thanks for the laughs, internet stranger! 😂
So sad. I wish he had gotten the love, support, and help he deserved after being rescued from that awful place.
God bless. Nobody deserved that. Shes such a beautiful soul. I wish her happiness.

I can agree with your statement

Yes her blindness combined with crazy husband meant she couldn't do much besides sneaking in at night to feed her daughter, that too was supposedly risky because the husband would beat her
The mother could have snuck out told the police, the mother could have given her brother a note secretly, her mother should have known something was fucked up when she started to get beaten (before her vision was taken away).

Tiresa Mercruy Which i believe was a crucial mistake if you ask me.
EddieA316 I know. Her mom screwed her life up twice.
Depending.

It would be nice if there was more information on John Wiley's story. Going simply from information about Genie, to watching this video I can't help but think "Your sister had it much worse. You can talk and function." Does anyone know if there is more information about his side of the story?
Check out the description of the video for links.
"Genie" probably would have ended up dying in that room.
not good to compare, he too was a victim of abuse from his father also.

There is a long article about him but in german.

He went through a hell more severe than most can imagine going through.
And I thought my family was messed up ,I pray both you can heal and move on
This is so tragic. His father damaged so many people.
I love this comment section. Everybody is so understanding here
This is a sad story
ye
He was a lot stronger than he knew. Honestly an awesome person, and it's so sad he ever wondered if he failed God. So many of the "less abused" siblings grow up and downplay all that happened while keeping their parents on a pedestal - and then continue to blame the scapegoated sibling(s) and/or they become abusers themselves.
I just wish that Susan and Genie could be reunited.
God never fails us!!! Sounds like you are doing better.
Mayne he didn’t want to remember it you thought of that. Selfish pr**k.
And even if he did remember it im sure it wouldn’t be for your pleasure.
Why would you want to hear him remember something so terrible?
Why should he? The public isn't entitled to his recollection of abuse.
God bless him.
Awesome intellectual accomplishment of this man to realize and self-reflect...
where is she today this story is very old.I am praying for her..god be with this soul.she needs to be taught about our father in heaven and our Lord and savior...god be with her always
+Cindy Leidy she is alive in an undisclosed institute
+Cindy Leidy In a way... shutting her off like this is just another level of abandonment.
Pamela Stetor
Ugh... don't even get me started again.
Scorch428 In other words, quit blaming God for everything. These people decided to follow the devil instead. Ever think about that?
I think the Father had some mental disorders as well, since he "hated sound" this is one symptom of many problems. But also, it let's you be thankful for your parents and your children. What an inspiration John could be to help people. God's way is a way of peace and Grace. I hope John finds him. John 3:16.
Great post Stevphanie, my childhood was a cinerella story as compared. And I spent the first 4 years of my life in a hospital. My mother is an angel, God broke the mold. Its obvious the father had mental disorders, its too bad that children had to suffer because of it.
Stephanie Spears Maybe he has extreme anger issue with sensory.
ugh
I really do think that all the horrific abuse he inflicted on his children and wife had much more to do with the fact that he was indeed a very toxic and corrupt person given his overall character. rather than just having serious mental disorders.
I read somewhere that he had extreme ptsd and flashbacks from being in WW1 and since he was 70 when he died his age would have lined up. He probably had way deeper issues on top of that but he was insane.
I seen where John passed away fairly young. Rip John Wiley 🙏
He looks like her. 😢
Poor guy. You can tell he was hurting a lot. He seemed like a very nice, but sad, lonely man.
RIP.
Children don't always have the knowledge and strength to fight back. Many are victims of their upbringing
You can see the pain and hurt in his eyes, he definitely had a hard life too and I’m willing to bet it didn’t stop even after his dad was gone
a LITTLE resentment? i think i'd be a lot more outraged...
frozenfeather13 Try not to be too hard on him. He lived a terrible life filled with very little joy in it.
versace 666 Did you say something?
Ametama are you stupid. He was abused as well and he was a CHILD.
I would completely understand you having that opinion about his mother that was an adult and allowed both of her children to be abused.
Ametama, if you have never been in a situation like Genie's brother was you could not understand why he didn't call the police. It's just not that simple, he was a child himself.
@@amatamaaa 2 years later. I'm wondering if you're still stupid.
Peace be with u too John Wiley.dont lose hope to God.
i hope John Wiley never lets the effects of what he experienced and saw in those years effect him in a negative way.. he is also a victim and been through alot himself.. bless ❤
It seems like she has inner beauty in her heart that attracted all people who treated her, so was everyone who saw her videos
This beauty has to be cared of
Her story made some human cruelness appear in a shameful image, even in people who are supposed to care her with most love
God never fails us but our parents, people, sure can. And you are correct sir, it is never too late to turn to God.
Being atrocious to your own children, while thinking that you are actually protecting them is horrible! I don't hate but pity the father. He seems to have certain serious medical condition. The mother should have tried to save children from him. But, may be she never realised what the circumstances could be.
His father killed their other siblings by abuse.
It's sad that he feels that he might have let God down.
I wonder if he ever saw her again, or tried to, and how she'd react to that. I hope, at the very least, she found some happiness.
Wow a troubled soul ... Yet human resilience . He's alive .
And he's happy she's getting all this attention .... And help .
The link just has a short written story. Where is the rest of this interview?
I feel for you and your family, bro. God didn't let you down: the world did. Momma never said it would be easy. I was horrendously abused as well, though not to this degree. I'm glad you escaped and have a life.
So much for “Gods plan” am I right??
Love how you Christian’s cherry-pick words in order to fit situation better.
@@Z0Z33KY Yeah keep on living life trying to make a useless point, angsty teen.
Will where did you learn her name? I hope you don't mind me asking but I've also been researching this case and I was never able to find it.
MrRibbotron your research skills are severely lacking. A Google search of "genie Wiley real name" gives the answer before any links even.
I wonder, if Genie was kept in isolation until she was of adult age, about 18-20 when the mind stops developing, when the social worker found her, would she have learned anything at all about the world, even words etc.? How would she react when the therapists showed her the outside world?
I hope we never find a case like that, because no one deserves to go through that.
www.dailymotion.com/video/x3pmezz
Here's the link to the full documentary if u still care. she was in isolation for 13 years but her story didn't have that great of an ending.
So sad.
This is the most disturbing and disgusting and tragic thing I've ever heard of. I want to love Genie and take away all her pain and fear. 😭😭😭😭
It makes you question everything you know about sympathy.
thank you Jesus Christ.
Such a very sad story
1:30 Maybe he allowed this because he would have never found him without it. Also a lot of treasure in heaven is waiting for him now...hope everything turns out fine
the house still stands in Arcadia. when the story first ran in the paper all names and address were published. I found it on microfiche.
+Chris C Send me a link
I certainly dont have it anymore. Moved to chicago. We stopped by and took pictures. 2007
Chris C Wait what, Im saying do you have a link to the Newspaper. U actually went by the house and everything?!?!
Here's the house on Street View (obscured by the tree in the front yard):
www.google.com/maps/@34.1222828,-118.059584,3a,75y,80.42h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sQu3TsCKWqLlkZjGkAZCm-Q!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
Although it's still there, it wouldn't have been surprising if the house had been demolished as a stigmatised property.
@@willpugh-calotte2199 Looks like someone lives there if that's a truck in the driveway.
Bless you

I'm so sorry
You should look up what their home life was like. The father was absolutely insane. I felt horrible for all the children in that family.
Vam Sahs
thanks Vam . i don't know this life poor girl women .but i know how this men feels with the home violence . thank you again
+badboybaldy1 He was treated just as poorly as Genie was.
She decided to take over her grandson's care for several months, and he made good progress with her
ButterfleeEllie
thank you for the comment . kind of you .
I wish I knew If John goes to see his sister, and visit with her, she might not have learned language, But she would have known her brother, as he was in the room, enough times for her to recognize him, John, God didn't fail you, nor have you failed God, But dont fail your sister.
Elliottsrode He passed away in 2011. I read that some place else.
Thank you Jaime, and to you as well, very few good homes for the mentally handicapped ppl. there is sooo little love in this world today.
Elliottsrode Absolutely. And when you add to that the fact that there are entirely too many people having children that aren't fit to raise them, it's no wonder this world is going to hell in a handbasket. :o( And it's been going on and getting progressively worse since the beginning of time. This story is a prime example.
I hope John finds/found peace, love, and forgives himself honestly - survivors guilt is a bitch and I'm hoping he feels better.
He passed away in 2011
sometimes ferocious animals become way better than human....
I wonder if he’s gone and visited his sister in the faculty for adults in CA before he passed away
@@Z0Z33KY could have been 4.
Ani Vai i agree..Was wondering the same thing.why is he ok? was he brought up differently?
Elaine Cochrane The father thought the girl was retarded when she was about two so from that time until she was 13 she was locked in a room and tied to a toilet. The father beat her if she made noise so she was 13 and unable to talk or walk well
+Elaine Cochrane he went to school allowing him to develop his social skills also being able to live with his grandmother
I know genie is still alive but is John still alive today?
Cindy Wu no sadly he passed away in 2011
Had no idea she had a brother until now? Where was his story through out the documentary?
The difference is that his grandmother intervened while he was an infant. Genie didn't have anyone intervene until it was too late.

+Ani Vai most outlets decided to leave him alone because of what he went through. They didn't want to being him down by making him relive the atrocities he experienced. It wouldn't be fair to him.
RIP JOHN...
lost souls, sorry for all of them......
Genies mother sued the researchers. Susan Curtiss actually wanted to be her legal guardian and already set up a trust fund of ~$8000. She wasn't allowed to meet Genie due to her mother and after her mother passed away, Curtiss has tried but not located her since.
❤❤❤
there were indeed women who had worked with genie as well, the men were there to help and also to do their job, just because there were men doesn't mean they took advantage of her. which they did not, they loved her everyone did and does. As for the other questions I do not know the answer too.
Didnt the brother die in 2008?
They look alike ❤️
All of society and scientists failed them. How could 2 babies be sent home from the hospital to a mother who is an alcoholic???????
No one knows about him. Sad.
