When you've got a live band/music pit and backing tracks, it can be hard without an in-ear monitor to ensure you're keeping in-time to what the audience is hearing, especially when your location varies as you move here and there. You're often somewhere between the band and the speakers at the front and side of the stage and depending on layout may be behind both the band and speakers, so it can be a bit hard to pick up the beat, since everything is aimed forward, towards the audience. The band and the performing artist(s) will usually have either a static monitor (a speaker in front of them) or an in-ear monitor (the earpiece), and since you're already sending audio to those monitors, if you've got the extra in-ears and radio equipment, it can be beneficial to run a monitor out to other performers if needs be. Just helps keep everything a little bit tighter for a big show.
