This woman is telling the truth. I traveled end of Jan this year and as soon as the workers see you are a foreigner they prey upon you. A guy insisted on helping me find my bag even when I told him I didn't need assistance. Proceeded to get me thru customs and then expected me to pay the both of them. I told them no thank you grabbed my luggage and proceeded to walk. The guy started shouting at me and I shouted back and kept it moving. Loved the country and the ppl but the airport is a turn off!

Something similar happened to me traveling from America to Lagos in August 2021. The lady who got me through customs asked for a “tip”, and the airport worker who insisted on assisting with the luggage specifically asked for $40. It is not a good impression to give a foreigner, especially someone like myself, who is an African American traveling back to the motherland for the very first time to connect to my roots. Some of us have been waiting our whole lives to finally travel to Africa and extortion is the first thing that greets us?

@@missrhoadie7867 You speak the truth. I am also African American and I love Africa. I have travelled to several countries in Africa. I really Love Lagos too. My 4th trip there was May-mid August. 3 months stay. This last trip, departing was awful!! I was so happy my husband, who is Nigerian was with me. I felt a real sadness because Nigerian people, Lagotians are amazing. The sadness I felt was the disservice the airport staff do to Lagos, and the country as a whole. It’s sad because too many people have negative attitude toward Nigerians. The way too many have against African Americans. What also saddened me is when I looked at my Husband and thought how kind and amazing he is, and patient, someone will judge him because he is Nigerian, based on the negative experiences encountered at MM Lagos International Airport.

Wow 😂 my twin brother and I also traveled as African Americans to Lagos in August 2021 for the first time to celebrate returning home to reconnect with our roots and culture and without question had the time of our lives. People, food, culture, and great hospitality, but unfortunately Lagos airport was very disappointing and embarrassing. Bribery, extortion, harassment, and allowing white and Asian travelers to jump the line over their fellow black brothers and sisters was too common. We will definitely be returning to Nigeria but really hope they transform the culture at Lagos airport so when more Black Americans return home, they can be proud of their experience at L.I.A.

So the behavior of the staff at the Lagos Airport does NOT reflect on the people of Nigeria. I lost a lot of money at the airport. I’m so happy she did this! I had plans, tickets accommodations everything. I was coming to Nigeria! But every time I looked into it I kept seeing things about bribery, scams, just flat out corruption. As a solo traveler, and a single mother, that is not a chance I can take. So I hope things change so that people can actually travel to the country without security being a problem and things like this happening at the airport.
I would also like to add that the requirements around that PCR testing are unclear. When I was initially looking into this the website said that you could pay once you get to Nigeria, but then it changed stating that you had to pay prior, then it changed again. It’s fraudulent to harass and make the travel experience unnecessarily stressful and tedious by asking for money to subvert regulatory frameworks put in place and not applied fairly and consistently. They should state anyone that wants to enter not traveling should also have PCR or pay for lateral flow at the entrance with proof of double vaccination.

We know when to tip, but it is infuriating when they demand it as if it is their entitlements. I remember some years ago, under Obasanjo’s tenure , Channel 4 down here in the UK , went undercover , exposing the corruption at MMA . The government acted swiftly, but it did not last. It was back to the status quo, within a year. I am not optimistic, that things will change.

I have registered my covid test from the UK and paid for my 7 days retest in naija. Although , the portal was very confusing but I got some help from a friend who was already in naija.
I am so proud of the covid protocol at the airport, there are staff that made sure people are distancing themselves but some visitors did not listen to them.
I think our diaspora people have their own fault, they all behave differently when they get home. They put themselves in vulnerability by not having the right paperwork knowing that they can bribe someone.
I saw an official given his personal number to a visitor who has expired passport.

The issues at MMA goes beyond reporting to FAAN. The MMA is just rowdy, not traveler friendly and cumbersome processing.
Every airport personnel touts by trying to assist because the processes are cumbersome without clear cut signage.
Sometimes the personnel flex muscle among themselves or interdepartmental superiority at the expense of the travelers.
We have too many personnel milling around the airport looking for travelers not familiar with the processes they may want to assist but invariably for a fee.

Her concerns are valuable, there are many of us who were and have been treated terrible. I can truly relate to what she is saying. It's true many nice Nigerians consoled me after being asked for money from workers at the airport. I was in tears and frustrated. My son and I had to pay several people. Will the corruption stop? I doubt it

Not only was I threatened to have my bags confiscated for extortion/money so was he. Thank God his cousin works for the government and had to shout at them, but it does not stop at the airport. This happened at every government entity. At a point you get frustrated and leave

I feel for this African American lady. I don't give them the chance to ask me for anything not anymore. On arrival I behave as if I'm resident in Nigeria arriving home I just start speaking Yoruba. One of the first thing I do is check their name badge and say hello Mr so and so they forget their name is on their uniform, shocked 😲 that I know their name duh! There is the ice breaker right there. No more asking for 'blessing' I'm hopeful whether its in the near future it remain to be seen. Thanks for your help bringing us Nigeria🇳🇬Travel updates. The issue of not allowing your sig other to get into the airport with you has been existing for over 6 years now if my memory serves me right. It is not because of COVID. Sometimes they allow just one person in with you and others can't follow through except you bribe. Lagos airport will be better!

I said the exact same thing of harrassment at my trip before the last. It's ridiculous. I still ask myself the money with receipts they collect at the food clearance. The last trip I had to pay I believe it was about 2k for carrying my local food. It's annoying. They rip people off just at every opportunity they get. Truth be told there's need for change.

    I agree with this lady.
Most of those staff are corrupt. They ask for money everywhere. Even as a student, I go into the rest room - the cleaners ask for money. I get to the check in counter - the customs people ask for money while they check the bags. I get to the area where my hand luggage is checked, they ask for money. It’s terrible. I told them I was a student, I have nothing to give them. My money is for school.
Please don’t defend them. Call out bad behavior.

I had a similar experience when I traveled to Nigeria in March 2021. It was horrible 😢 😫! I got in an argument with a baggage handler because he wouldn't give me my bag unless I give him some money. I don't ask him to help me with my bags. He just walked up to me and start walk away with it. I told him very politely to give my bag. He ask for money. I told him no. My husband arrived and he insisted we give him. My husband went off. They argued! People were stopping and staring. Finally, the man walk away because security was walk toward us. I have traveled to other countries and Nigeria 's airport is the worst!

Funke well said. I commend the courage of the American lady, standing up to bad practices at the Lagos airport. It’s shameful that in this modern era, Nigeria standards are still backward. Workers at the airport are still begging for money, one have to bribe to have family and friends with him/her inside the airport. Very shameful. Just look at the state of the Lagos airport, that enough speaks volumes. Very old and untidy and sometimes there is no light at the airport. It pains me sometimes to call myself a Nigerian. I don't understand our leader's mental states. They travel a lot yet they have refused to improve things. They prefer it the way it is at the moment. Wicked people!

So many agencies work in the airport with the culture of corruption seen everywhere. The Airport Authority MUST ensure that anyone dealing with the public no matter the agency must be in uniform and wear a name tag and an on-duty card which FAAN officials must scrutinise from time to time. Complaints boxes must be placed in conspicuous spots at both arrival and departure areas as well as phone numbers of where Complaints would be directed.
The culture of irresponsible people living on bribes must come to an end.

I like the way Sassy Funke addressed the video point by point. I can understand the frustration that we all go through at the MMA in Lagos. The begging and extortion are over the pale. I also believe that she was not expecting the stress because of where she was coming from.
I believe that they tried to extort from her just like the rest of us. This is very bad. I also believe that she must have done something wrong too for them to want to extort her. I am very sad that our image is what it is now at the airport. Good job Sassy Funke for the disclaimer and the way you analyzed the video.
