Trick that I love for splitting screens on Windows is to hold down the Window key and press left or right, it will automatically put the window you are on the side chosen and then usually offers to allow you to choose another window for the other half. The good thing about this is that they are kind of connected, so if you wanted to make one a little bigger or smaller, then you click the border per usual and it will adjust both at the same time. You can also use up and down for this or put 4 windows on one screen - although I rarely use these options unless the monitor is quite big. Thanks for all your useful videos!! They are always so helpful!

I switch from ancestry to familysearch and vice versa all the time - but wow - thank you for the extra tips on each search!!
I've had census records on ancestry show up looking "blank" just like you show, but that tip to go look on other sites, and to adjust the contrast, brightness, etc... that made my day; thank you so much!!
You have also helped by telling us how to search the card catalogue, that is invaluable! Thank you so so much for all this wonderful advice.

Loved this video, we have to remember they only share about 10% of their records which is good news for researchers! Woohoo! Another tip that I use a lot: if you are a document saver (I am) check to see how each site downloads your item. Ancestry will give you a copy of the census page, but FS also gives you the list of indexed info on that page. I save to pdf, and do my notes and questions right on the page. The list is much easier to read, plus I hilight “my people” so that I find them again quickly. Explore your options. 🙂

Like you said, searching is more about the process. This has got me thinking about upgrading my process. In an Excel workbook, I have birth, marriage, death, location info about the people I am researching. I use formulas to create URL's to various pages on a variety of sites. I use a simple macro to open 20-30 webpages on Family Search, Ancestry, etc. with the search data filled in.

    • @GenealogyTV

Wow... I can only imagine what that macro is. I use them for source citations all the time in Word. Thanks for sharing... and Enjoy the Process.

I use these two together all the time and its amazing. I basically use the family Search as my floating tree to search up my DNA cousin match groups on ancestry. Then I throw a link from their Family search person into the notes of my DNA matches on ancestry. The "View my relationship" On family search is amazing for this too.

Thank you for sharing these tips. I love finding new ways to dig deeper into finding more sources. Since I do 99% of my work in Family Tree Maker, I create a new source for the document/source at FS, but any images I mark as private so are not shared to my synced tree at Ancestry. I am not 100% sure if the images I save have to be marked private, but make sure I am covering all my bases. Again,, thanks for the great tips. Love watching your videos, as I am always learning something new.

I have looked for images on Family Search when Ancestry only has a summary listed. Also I've found Ancestry might only have 1 page of an investor's record and Family Search might have 3, 5 or even 7. But never realized 1 of the sites might have a better quality image. Thanks Connie!!

    • @GenealogyTV

You should be able to download it then upload to Ancestry as an image. Make sure you source it. Alternatively, grab the URL to the exact record on FamilySearch and then on Ancestry in the ancestors profile under the source column click add a web link. Paste the URL and name it something you’ll understand. Once you save it you will find it at the bottom of the source list.

Ive noticed also the Ancestry film scans are inferior to the FamilySearch scans. LDS Family Search of course has the original negatives so Ancestry must be scanning purchased positive reels like libraries use. In most cases both are readable but if the film is really faint you need to go to the LDS Family Search version.

    • @GenealogyTV

I don't work for Ancestry... so I don't know exactly. I'm going to guess it is because they don't have a lot of samples/reference tests from which to compare us to. So the area needs to be larger until they get more of a reference panel from that region. Then as their reference panel grows, they can start to break up the regions.

well that wasn't new. ancestry and familysearch and myheritage has been together for a few years now. I pretty much despise myheritage, and members are rude and uppity kinda folks. I don't know what their subscription price is, but they 'used' to be lower than ancestry. And ancestry's records are better in format and searching. I've been with ancestry when they were free. That was back in 1996-97(when I found them online). Their motto was genealogy should be free! (Vital records in America is public access) And ancestry sells it!
But I will say that joining ancestry, I finally swallowed my pride and joined because I couldn't access the records they had. I've never regretted that at all. My mother's biological family. She was adopted out at the age of 8, and her parents were still alive when that happened. Ancestry and a cold call to two James Bates in the town of Albia, IA helped me find my mothers ancestors from her parents on down. And with the dna, I'm still finding relatives. My mother was baby number 7 out of 12 babies that I have found thus far. Ancestry helped me achieve that, and my mother died in 2019 knowing who her family was (she grew up in the two counties of Iowa right along with her cousins the whole time). Even with pictures. Ancestry IS, in my opinion, worth the subscription. I got a subscription in 2012, and still using it. Familysearch.org has the same history, but its free, though you can pay a subscription for specific membership with the Church of Mormons fame. But records are still free, and they are adding more all the time.
    That's my 2 cents worth.
