I live in Helen, and I like taking the scenic route through Stotesbury, in fact drove through there today on the way home, yes a lot of the homes are gone, I always loved looking at the old colored church, I would have love to have seen it in it's hayday
A few years ago I drove to Stotesbury and looked around. My paternal grandparents lived at Helen, which is not far away. My aunt and uncle attended Mark Twain High School.
Thank you, I will be visiting Stotesbury on 25 September 2018 to observe the 100th anniversary of my father's birth there. He was delivered by Dr. Ira Mack Fisher. My family was not from there and moved away less than 2 years later. My father always called it Stokesbury. We made a trip out there once in 1972 to see it, never took the first picture.
I typed a comment and it disappeared. I'm giving it another try. I enjoyed the drive and the music. The abandoned church was very interesting to see with it sitting in the overgrown field. A photo of that church on Facebook is what brought me to You Tube looking around for more information. I'm glad I found your video and I look forward to Part 2 of your tour.
I lived in the houses going straight from where Robert Byrd grew uo. Only been to Stotesbury once since my dad died. Gives me happy tears to ride along tonight.
Great video! You know, I wish there were more RUclips videos like this, of people driving in areas in the South, including Appalachia like this (though West Virginia IS the South, I was just being more specific).
I have driven this many many times. Man I miss it. I have a video of Whitby I plan to post where I did the same thing you did. Please do post more vids. Means so much and thanks!!
whitbywv I am in texas, grew up in Colorado Breckenridge 5th generation bunch of miners in family spent 15 years of he'll in Arizona, my mothers family is from charlston area outside it old farm got sold off piece by piece ,I'm going move to w.v just need make enough support things as I know there's not much work but I'm coming because I need get back to real ,honest, hard working ,loving people that so much of America has lost and forgotten
I grew up in the northern central coal towns of WV but I would be afraid to drive around these places now. The poverty, abandoned houses and stores, the trash in the yards, the crumbling infrastructure and everything reeks of people who are desperate and may be addicted to opioids and crystal meth, etc. I would be afraid they would rob me. I know in some counties in coal country the courts are filled with young and middle aged addicts just like the inner cities of DC, Baltimore, south side Chicago, East Los Angeles, etc. Sad situation all around. In my youth crime in the coal towns was very rare, usually just mischief just. The West Virginians I grew up with were not drugged out or criminals, just really nice good folks. But almost all moved away to make a future for themselves, just as I did.
Here's the man the town was named after. Thanks for the tour of what's left. Little remains of his beautiful home in Philadelphia, PA. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_T._Stotesbury

Why does this look so peaceful to me. So nostalgic.

JEFFERY,
Thanks for the tour. It looks like there isn't much room to meet a car on those roads. You did a good job of showing us around.

That could also be said of some cities too.
