SMALL Change BIG Difference - No Dig Bed Edging and Bark - Gardening in Portugal

  • It's the end of April and things have been growing well in our no dig garden in Portugal - but there's always room for improvement. We love the no-dig way of gardening but struggle to keep a separation between the compost in the beds and the bark in the pathways. In this video we're aiming to remedy that.
    Join us for a few days in the garden as we build some wooden frames around the beds and top up the paths with bark.

    Good choice on that edging wood. What you've done is so easy and simple that you could even dismantle the frames in the wetter winter months of Portugal and store the wood undercover for that period, and then reassemble at the start of the next growing season. They'll last a long time.

    We have a climate very similar to Serta here in California and for several years I have been experimenting with mulches on the beds to minimize weeds and evaporation. I found that compost mulch wasn't managing water loss well. The best so far is this: straw bales that sat out in the winter rain and partially degraded. When spread on the beds in spring the softened straw forms a dense mat around the crops. When amending the beds with compost the straw can either be pulled aside or left under the new compost to further add organic material. This made a huge difference in water consumption and mostly smothers the weeds! It's important to find low-seedhead straw, though, so it doesn't add to the weed pressure.

    Mower can be used to run over the cut grass to use as a weed suppression. People here use mowers to shred leaves in the autumn so those are much smaller pieces and combine with green grass clippings and garden waste for a very nice compost/mulch. Yes, compost is mulch, as are shredded leaves.
    It looks great now, those bark chips dress it up very well.

    We used to spread straw and let our chickens work it. They ate all of the remaining seeds and added a nice coating of poo. We would collect it after 6 months or so and spread it as mulch. Since we only had 8 chickens, there wasn't that much poo, so the straw-poo combo wasn't too hot. It was wonderfully effective as a moisture/sun shield for the soil.

    For the tomatoes I guess its more efficient to have a sturdy horizontal connection on top of the posts and from there have a yarn for every plant upwards to it. With a system like this youll only have to do it once and it requires less material. You only have to lead the tomatoes up from time to time.
    The garden looks beautiful with all these flowering grasses! I think its a good thing that you dont mow done every inch like the neighbors. Sure, you have to do it every now and then but theres no need to have a golf course green the whole year.

    • @MAKEDOGROW
      @MAKEDOGROW  Год назад +2

      We tried that type of tomato trellis last year and didn’t really like it, so we’re trying a different method this year. So far we’re not liking it either … a bit fiddly.
      We’re trying to mow less but also stay within the fire preparedness rules, so far it’s working well

    • @Gummmibaer
      @Gummmibaer Год назад

      @@MAKEDOGROW oh okay. I know this system you did last year from foil tunnels. Another option would be no yarn at all but a sturdy metal frame and bamboo/wooden trelis in between. Dont know if I can link it here but this Austrian guy ("Tomatenflüsterer") has a lot of footage of it and I guess hes looking for efficient solutions because of his hundreds of tomatoes 😁 ruclips.net/video/9mlOCxcktew/видео.html

    I was thinking that some fence stain on the wood might draw out the life a little but sun is the enemy of woodstain - it wouldn't be a good idea. It would bake off in a year or two. It also crossed my mind that you could staple plastic over the tops to try and keep moisture in the beds - one of those beds with wood around being turned into a mini-greenhouse with seeds sown straight into compost in the ground, but, I don't think this is too practical - sowing seeds to plug trays that are sealed under transparent plastic and leaving them in the sun is something I'd probably try out.
    Also, you mentioned that slugs aren't such problem there than they are in the UK but there are some plants which slugs don't like - conifers, geraniums and lavender - those with a pungent smell. A border around of lavender is probably a completely unnecessary luxury. Again, I'd buy one geranium and see how long it takes to make a border from it, constantly taking cuttings from it over the years. You're probably above that kind of thing...

    Nice, I recently put raised beds in my no dig greenhouse, it really helps with avoiding compaction also. I would say that wood in or on the ground has a shorter life due to microbial action, I also saw someone used metal angles but vertically into the ground at the corners, so the horizontal wood slot behind.. easily replaceable and no screws.
    Looking good though, I like things to be framed😊

      @@michaeltempsch5282 yes a lot can depend on the type of soil and thickness of wood, I've got soft wood impregnated fence posts that are at least 20 years old, the soil is sandy, I've done gardens with heavy soils where they only last 5 years, but they always rot just below and above soil level.

    One function of mulch is to reflect or absorb light/heat, so in a cold climate, dark mulches like compost can heat up soils and pale mulches like straw/hay/alfalfa etc, can reflect light / heat in a dry/hot climate. Some Portuguese farmers use sand in this way. The other function of this is to protect the biology in the top layer of soil/compost, as high temps will kill microbes.
