I absolutely ADORE my little lady. Anyone who thinks that spiders don't have personalities needs to pick up one of these quirky little boogers, asap. They may be slow growing, but they are incredibly entertaining throughout their entire life cycle.

    Hey Tom!
I’m beyond totally new to the hobby - I am preparing to buy my first big spider - me and my husband decided on the beautiful G. Pulchripes. I am reading everything I can find about it, and the hobby in general, and one of the lovely people on the Tarantula Talk page on FB recommended your podcast and channel, and I spent the last few days listening and watching - and I want to say the biggest THANK YOU I have to anybody. I have a few different hobbies (I am a painter, I cycle, I grow orchids and carnivorous plants), and rarely if ever have I encountered a channel/podcast like yours, with SO much useful information that goes past the ordinary care notes.
Specifically, the fact that you tell the stories of mistakes and fails - because as an absolute noob, there is so much to know - and hearing stories of what *not* to do is so, so helpful - and it’s this exact experience that nobody enjoys sharing, for good reason.
A HUGE thank you gorgeous all your work, I can’t wait to raise my first T baby, and I know that thanks to you putting all this information out there I will be so much better prepared for this.
    THANK YOU!!!!

I never had much interest in the pulchripes until I saw one at the pet store that had been purchased and returned for being "defective." They had purchased it on Christmas eve and left it in the car in freezing temperatures while they went shopping at Wal-Mart. The poor thing dropped 2 legs from the ordeal and was returned to the pet store. Captain Stumpy now has 8 beautiful legs and has been with me for 2 years.

I adore "Pulpy", my G. pulchripes. She's about 3" now and it feels like it's taken 14 years for her to get to that size, hahah. My GBB, got at the same time, same sized sling, is WAY bigger. Pulpy is such a laid back little spider, just hangs out being beautiful. Eats like a champ and is the star of a video I showed friends at work who had NO idea that spiders molted. Got an awesome timelapse of her molting.

Tom, this is a comment about your podcast more than the RUclips channel. Sorry if it's long or I ramble.
I completely understand where you're coming from as far as something becoming work and losing its joy. That's the reason why I didn't go to art school as well. I know everyone really looks forward to the content you create, but I'm so glad to hear you drawing boundaries on your time, energy, and skill. Even if you stopped putting stuff out there today, what you've done for me, and our awesome hobby is immeasurable. You inspired me, and have introduced me to species, and helped me realize my own capabilities, which has done amazing things for my confidence and self-worth. I travel for work, so I'm all over the place. It's cool to take care of each of the species I have, thinking about a podcast, or something I've learned about them from your channel, and remembering what area of the country I was in. It's a great mental exercise for me. Thank you so much for all you do and continue to do.
Also, I know you like metal, if you haven't heard of them, check out Chelsea Grin.
    Much respect,
    Jessica

Hello! Thank you so much for the kind words. Yeah, this is just a fun thing for me, and if it ever stops being fun, I'll stop. I did that podcast in hopes that folks would understand that this isn't a business for me, so I can walk away at any time. And that's NOT a threat, but a reality. I think that some folks struggle to recognize that fact. And I'm glad that you appreciate the the art bit. I did one year of art school before I realized that I didn't want to take something that brought be joy and turn it into a business. When I illustrated several years ago, it started off fun, but I started to burn out after a while. The joy was gone, so I moved on. Thanks for commenting and for understanding!

I have a sub adult male named Larry (approximately 4.75 inches) that I keep in the 8x8x8 reptile growth enclosure.
I will confess G pulcripes weren't much on my radar but I got my fellow for free and was instantly smitten. He is lovingly referred to as my chaos child.
Larry spends 80% of his time lounging at the very front of his enclosure, 5% bulldozing (he managed to upend his hide and then piled everything else on top of it so he could sleep in a ditch) and 15% trying to give me a heart attack by jumping on anything that crosses the boundary of his lid (his favorite being his water dish as I'm refilling it). It's a good reminder tho to stay calm and be mindful when doing maintenance on all my spiders. It's his house after all.
I really don't think G pulripes gets nearly enough attention for how pretty they are with the yellow knees and pinkish hair. Even if some of them are gigantic weirdos.

My water dish is about an inch above the substrate. Still very easy for her to access and drink but it seemingly stops her from wanted to put dirt in it. She's never done that ever since I placed the dish slightly higher than the ground.

Hey Tom! So great to see a video from you again! I've been on a Black Sabbath spree lately but if you haven't heard of them I'm concerned for your wellbeing, lol. Snowblind is such a great song especially when I'm feeling down it just brings me back up. Little update on my end, a friend and breeder just reached out to me and her P. arboricola slings are ready to ship, so I purchased two to replace my girl Mira who died from impaction recently. I miss her so much and she was one of my first tarantulas I ever purchased, as well as hands down my favourite specimen, so it was a hard hit. I'm still struggling with my E. uatuman male, he just isn't doing his thing. The female is very receptive but the male is shy and stresses easily. I will try again tomorrow... I have to rehouse my T. apophysis who just moulted and turned into a crazy man so that should be fun, but I found a wonderful large bin for him so hopefully all goes well. I recently got in an order from Kelly Swift, what an amazing experience! I am trying to work more with true spiders since I still have a twinge of arachnophobia with them, but I'm definitely getting better! I also purchased two centipedes from him, and man it feels good to have centipedes again! I obviously have a large tarantula collection but centipedes are really my favourites, I just am not comfortable working with the giants so long as I share my apartment wall with an elderly woman and a newborn down the hall, pedes are just too good at escaping and too venomous for me to risk someone's life and eviction. One day I'll have a house (maybe) and then I can keep all the giants I want!
"Fun" anecdote for Billie, I'm struggling mightily with two carpet beetle clients and I can safely say that carpet beetle clients are the most unhinged individuals I've ever met. One goes around with a magnifying glass, headlamp, and tweezers, and picks the larvae up instead of vacuuming because "vacuuming takes too long." Send help.... Like girlfriend everyone has carpet beetles.... if you're looking for them that hard you're going to find them. It's been a rough ride with her for sure, but my coworker came to back me up yesterday and client had "done her own research" (i.e. read a wikipedia article and a blog post somewhere) and basically demanded we use an IGR. I don't touch IGRs because they have a similar effect as herbicide (i.e. impeding moult cycles, etc.) and after listening to your podcasts about the bad bag of substrate a few winters ago, I'm terrified of using those chemicals and thankfully my manager understands that. Carpet beetles are a struggle for sure! I located the breeding sources (a bunch of old carpets in the attic that were infested, and an old rodent bait station from a previous homeowner that had been completely turned to powder by the larvae) and she expected immediate and total reduction... like girl it takes a while! She wasn't getting it... hopefully Billie can understand my frustrations!
Sorry for the long comment, hope you get to have a relaxing break! Wishing you and your family a relaxing holiday season :)

Hey, Charlotte! So sorry for the late reply...with the holiday coming up, I got quite busy. I've actually seen Sabbath in concert a few times, so we're good there. haha And that's awesome on the P. arboricola slings! I'm so sorry about Mira; I struggle each time I lose one. Hopefully, the T. apophysis rehouse goes well. Both of mine are CRAZY. haha I need to get some more pedes; my old girl finally died. Vacuuming takes too long? Oh dear lord. haha Yeah, IGRs are no joke. Some of this stuff is super lethal to taratnuals. Good job finding where they were coming from! That's Billie's favorite part of the job...figuring that stuff out. I shared this with her, and she totally does! Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

Brilliant video as usual Tom, and what a wonderful species of spider 🕷, I actually have a juvenile, and haven't had any issues to date and they do like it on the drier side, and constantly cover up their water dish, on the music side, 🎶 I love Sammy Davis Jnr, Judy Garland, Doris Day etc etc, however I will listen to anything that sounds really good, I have an affinity for really good singers and I love the three tenors, And having sang alot when i was in secondary school, this is why I enjoy the above mentioned so much, one more thing Tom, I do listen to ACDC aswell.

I wanted a G. pulchra and I was tripping over these guys. Now I want a G. pulchripes and all I can find are G. pulchras. One of those weird trends you see, I guess.
As far as bands go, recently I was lucky enough to see Hanabi from Japan in Pittsburgh. It is metal and pop with Japanese lyrics. It isn't for everyone, but it definitely scratched an itch for me.

    G. pulchripes is the most underrated species in my country. It has been breed excessively to the point that its price and value plummeted drastically and since then it became the most looked down species to the point that they are just considered as freebies and even sold for as low as a dollar or two. Unfortunately, the same thing is happening to Lasiodora parahybana, Tliltocatl albopilosus and Poecilotheria metallica. 😢 Sadly, no rules are applied on their breeding and marketing since tarantulas or exotic pets in general are considered as a black market and technically illegal (esp. tarantula). But there are some that can be purchased legally but it's quite rare atm.

Tom I'm sorry for commenting late on this one. Love your videos and your podcast, listen to them regularly and this might answer some of the questions I had about my G Pulchripes and why at a half inch it has been burrowing deep in its substraight and there might be some corrections to how I'm keeping him/her.
As far as music goes... I mostly listen on the tech death side but I haven't heard anything new that has caught my attention. I've been listening to a lot of Argent Metal, pretty much anything Mick Gordon touches. So I'm going to recommend 3teeth which might be a bit industrial for your tastes, all of their new stuff has been fantastic... If you are looking for a pop/metal vibe, they aren't my thing, but a friend of mine loves "Poppy" and that might scratch that itch. If it does, I'm glad you enjoy it, I'm going to listen to Necrophagist for the 10000th time. Beautiful spider Tom. I've become hesitant to recommend the species that seem to grow on geological time scales to beginners (without caveats at least). They're ideal as adults, but if someone is getting a sling, and only intends to have the one spider, the slow growers may be a poor fit. My first T was a B. albiceps, and while that's an awesome species for the beginner, I did not fully appreciate what "slow growing" could really mean---no regrets in my case, but my solution was getting a lot more spiders so they can cover for one another when they go pet-hole mode---if I was only willing to have one, that last year-long pre-moult would have put me off.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  6 месяцев назад

Yeah, I covered that as a podcast topic before. Very good point. I usually mention in the videos when they grow super slowly. A lot of folks who are getting their first tarantulas are scared of them, and the idea of a slow growing one actually appeals to them. That said, others could be turned off.

Hey Tom, the newer Reptile Growth, with the brand new packaging, do have a rubber bung that you can use to block the cable hole, but it comes out if you lift the perforated lid section off, so be carefyl not to loose it anyone 😅 The ones in the older packaging don't have a bung, so I've had to use a bit of plastic tape on both sides of the lid to cover it 😊

@@vanessasmith5227 well, I appreciate the dialogue. I wasn't trying to be like people that think the USA is the center of the universe, and I like to learn about words, culture and things from around the world. Thank you for answering very nicely. Sometimes, written words don't come across nicely, especially since I just wrote "bung?" You could have taken that as me poking fun. Anyway, have a good rest of the weekend and thx again.
PS: when I hear the word "bung" in my head, it reminds me of the old MTV show Beavis and Butthead. Beavis would walk around with the back head hole of his tshirt on top of his head. He would put his arms out at 45 degree angle, palms facing out and say "I am cornholio, I need TP for my bung-hole..." 🤦🏼‍♀️ And sometimes he'd say "Bung-holio". If you want a laugh, search it on RUclips, Beavis cornholio. Lol.

Hey Tom! Question. I just sent out my MM Aphonopelma iodius. I want to reuse the cork bark, but my boy was a bit of a hair kicker. I won't reuse the substrate. Is a good rinse off or boil enough to get the hair off? Or is there something else I could use to rid the cork bark of the urticating hairs?

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  5 месяцев назад +1

Sorry for the late reply, Callie! For cork bark, I scrub it well under hot water with a toothbrush and reuse it. I've never had any issues. Just be sure to put on gloves for new world species so that you don't get haired!

A golden knee was our very first T. Unfortunately, in spite of being convinced we had a little girl, after we'd had him about 3 years, he hooked out on us. Very cool little guy though.
Btw do barbarous growth make arboreal enclosures? I really like the look of those but all I've been able to find is terrestrial. The next new tank I'll be needing to buy is for a little versi sling. It'll be a while before she needs anything new but eventually I'll be on the hunt for something nice and at least semi inexpensive
Yeah, fellow metalhead here - mostly anyway. My go to playlist I listen to at work has Lamb of God, Gojira, Messuggah, Korn and Iwrestledabearonce among other things. My newest obsession though is probably Sleep Token. The new album is really good (especially The Summoning and Chokehold) but my favorite album is probably Sundowning. The song Blood Sport (from the room below version) absolutely gives me chills every time I hear it. They're hard to pin down as far as genre though - not just from one song to the next but within a single song they may jump between metal-ish to prog to kinda pop-y to even a little RnB. Really interesting band

    G. Pulchrapes is a spider i found for a great deal n said "what the hell." Its a staple and heres a deal. Never care much for it. It actually my favorite spider (this month) that i care for. It thinks its been hired to move dirt on a job site or something. Just like what was said in the video.. not burrowing just moving stuff around, BIG TIME too not just filling the wayer dish. G. Pulchrapes just seems to have few more marbles rollong around upstairs cpmpared to other spiders.

Hi Tom! My golden knee has become a fairly large girl. I rehoused her into the enclose you feature in this video. She was out and about for a while, occasionally staying in her hide, but not for long. For the last couple months, however, she has since remained in her hide disappearing from view. Food remains uneaten. I’m in Colorado and it’s definitely been winter here, but the room she lives in stays above 70. Question: do they hibernate seasonally? Will I ever see her again? Looks like she walled off the entrance to the burrow, but I dread her curling up and dying in the hide. Thanks! Signed, concerned T parent in Colorado.

If it's winter there, that's completely normal. All three of mine have been hiding for the past couple months, and one of them hasn't been eating. Even if you keep the room pretty warm, they seem to know that it's colder outside.

Wow this was my first sp. bought him around .5" inch and it grew to 3.5" in a year. He turned out ♂️ though, that was around 2019. I had to leave him to a friend when covid started he passed away late last year. Sadly didn't get to know if he matured or not my friend didnt know how to check. I got a new 5" inch sure ♀️ now! In your experience how big do they get? Google says 8.5" but thats probably super outlier, right?
ps: Electric callboy was a really nice recommendation they got the exact combination of metalcore and techno? Pop? I'm aiming for! Thanks

SO catchy! haha You guys have the perfect spider growing climate over there! haha I'm almost jealous. As for size, I would guess that an older one could ready 8", but it would be an outlier. Hope all is well!
