What are the downfalls of owning this hybrid car. What major maintenance would be needed. Can this crown get minimum 200k miles or more if taken care of?
This is the one I want. The Limited is the only trim level that you can get an interior color other than tomb black. I would rather get >40mpg and 600 miles of range than the high performance version. A number of reviewers have complained about lack of driver’s seat headroom so that is a concern. I too wish this was a lift back.
The lack of driver's seat headroom is in keeping with the lack of passenger seat headroom in the back. 🤨Why couldn't they have lifted headroom 4 inches the way they lifted the seating position 4 inches? The design craze kicked off by the original sloping Mercedes CLS sedan in 2004 is still distorting the shape of sedans from their original practical mission. I test drove a Limited and a Platinum today. After driving the Limited, I almost left. I didn't like the sound or feel of the 2.5 with the CVT at all. When I stepped hard on the gas, the car seemed to say, "please don't do this too often." It did not feel like a $45k car. Then I drove the Platinum. To me, it felt totally different. It was smoother, quieter, the steering felt crisper. Maybe that's because of the rear wheel bias of the Hybrid Max system. I wouldn't consider buying the Limited for $45k, but I'd consider the $50k Platinum. The engine/drivetrain felt more than $5k better. As for the looks, It's a love/hate thing, right? To me it's different look in a good way. I really like the Crown, but like others have said, a liftback would have been preferred as would a contrasting interior option on the Platinum. But I'll tell you what I do hate - the front end of just about every Lexus. I despise that spindle grill. Even Lexus admits it's a polarizing look, and yet they tag every car with that front end. However, since we're talking about $50k vehicles, we have to take a serious look at an ES. Then the problem becomes, if you want AWD you're looking at the ES250 with a non-turbo in-line 4. Only with the ES350 can you get the nice V6, but you lose the AWD and have to settle for front-wheel drive. To stick with the hybrid idea, you're now looking at the ES300h with the non-turbo in-line 4 and only front drive. That's like the worst of both worlds. For those saying it's an easy choice to run to Lexus, I'm not seeing it yet.

I would get it with the turbo. Not for the performance, but because if you drive on the highway a lot like I do, it is just so much smoother and easier on the engine getting up to highway speeds. I drove a GM car with the 3800 turbo and put over 300k miles on after getting it with 66k. I've had two similar non-turbo GM 3800 cars prior to and two since, and none of them saw, or will see 200k. The turbo GM got only one fewer MPG's than the non-turbo ones.

You wonder what the designers were thinking but designers like to indulge themselves. I would like to know what the product planners at Toyota USA and Canada were smoking or drinking when they chose this over a good looking Crown sedan, stylish CUV and sleekly practical Estate. From what I can see of the interior, it is fine for a car in today's $40k range but lacks some expected luxury for the upper end trims.
@@rightlanehog3151 North America may very well get some of the other variants. In the meantime they may not want to add more models that they can't fulfill anyway.
Kind of on the fence on this car. Definitely the Limited seems like the best choice. But lacking features (heads up). Interior may not be the highest quality but that I’d have to see.
While the Avalon was actually stylish, attractive and elegant, this Crown looks more utilitarian and it commands a bit of a price premium over the Avalon. I think it's the marketing department at Toyota knowing customers will simply step up to a Lexus at this price point.
Thank you for your ride review. This Crown might be the best everyday commute vehicle, a quiet, smooth, and comfortable ride. I cannot wait when Toyota to introduce the 4-Door Sedan version of Crown. That's what is famous and popular for Premium luxury sedans in Japan. Love Crown and Love Toyota.

The Platinum in gray and black is the best looking car made.
I don't like the styling in the outside but it's growing on me.
Is that fuel efficiency using regular grade fuel (87 Octane) or does it require higher grades?
Oh you're in Mississippi! I was thinking about getting the Platinum but The limited is more gas efficient.
Hi. What do you know about the phev crown
Not me, I prefer the Platinum Max.
I agree, give me Over 300 hp.
@@alexnutcasio936 you can get 300hp in a Camry for a lot less
Good thing they have different strokes for different folks.
I love our Platinum gray and black two-tone, The lower grades would disappoint me.
@@naveenthemachine You couldn't give me anything else Toyota makes.
Kind of on the fence on this car. Definitely the Limited seems like the best choice. But lacking features (heads up). Interior may not be the highest quality but that I’d have to see.
The avalon, especially the last gen actually was a good looking sedan, this just looks like a generic crossover.
As much as some loved to call the Avalon front end Charlie Chaplin mustache, I think it’s more attractive than the crown
True. Toyota shouldn't have killed the Avalon for this. This would've been a lot better as liftback.
While the Avalon was actually stylish, attractive and elegant, this Crown looks more utilitarian and it commands a bit of a price premium over the Avalon. I think it's the marketing department at Toyota knowing customers will simply step up to a Lexus at this price point.
@@chezzyperson3339 K8 looks cheap and overpriced, like it was.
Love Crown and Love Toyota.
its already a 4 door sedan
Hi Kurt. Since you have driven both the 2023 Toyota Crown Limited and 2023 Lexus RX 350h by now, which one is quiet at 70 mph?
I test drove both. RXH is quieter.
We need a crown with the front crown emblem from Japan and in Cypress green all around not 2 tone. Love that these are built in Japan. Are Toyota hybrids reliable? What do I need to know about maintenance costs?
Toyota Hybrid is top notch. Be sure to change the hybrid air filter and change the oil every 5K miles. Maintenance cost is not much more than a standard non hybrid car.
Welcome Back!!!
You're back! 🎉🎉🎉
@@KirkKreifels RUclips had me banned for a longtime for corny dad jokes.
I like what I see, the price could put me out of purchasing one? I will wait to see “Cost” ?? I think I’d buy the limited BUT, 91 octane??? What’s that all about??
A power pano roof, HUD, and owe tilt/telescopic wheel and JBL Synthesis system for better audio would all be welcome for a top line vehicle that is Crown. How does it ride on those enormous wheels Kirk?
All those are missing on the crown but the Avalon has those. Even A Camry has both a hud and pano roof
Surprisingly well.
@@naveenthemachine what the hell are you talking about .😂.crown has a panorama sunroof and more. You are now putting lies .wow this is the worst comment you have put.😂
@@naveenthemachine Wow that's a super odd decision.
@@ekgcanadianenthusiast9961 but it doesn’t open. And the crown pano roof isn’t big. If you saw the center cross bar is too much towards the front. Generally in a panoroof thr cross bar should be a bit further back towards the center
The photo angle in the made me think it was a Mazda 3, which already doesn't have enough headroom. Hopefully North America does get the Estate and Sport crowns
There is NOTHING about this design that is prestigious or deserving of the Crown name.
Oh glad this is not a hatchback model !!!
Nothing here to want to make me move away from my Toyota RAV4 2021 XLE hybrid that weighs 3700 pounds
If gas prices were lower, I'd consider getting the Platinum with a regular 6-speed tranny and the Hybrid MAX 2.4 motor.
To me, the styling does not evoke CROWN. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but I see more of a CAMRY style competitor and maybe that is what Millennials want to see. I like the looks of it, but I just don't see a CROWN when I look at it.
Interior seems underwhelming for the price. The two-tone does not fit the personality at all of what this car is meant to be. Very big and heavy but doesn’t take advantage of the size and doesn’t seem any more practical than my IS 350. I know this car is meant for the older crowd which I understand with the quality slow smooth ride, but why does it have the color scheme of a hellcat? Lol idk Im just in the minority that doesn’t understand this car. 😅
Nice review. New feature Proactive Driving Assist is very natural to me; it could cover many careless human errors.
True but add many computer error.
But still the price wise… I rather go with Lexus instead or XLE if not last solution would a Venza/Harrier for that price.
I just don’t know why someone would buy anything but the XLE grade of this. Just buy a Lexus ESh for this kind of price
I WANT THE CROWN SEDAN!!!!
GH would look good on 21’s too. So I guess no cheap trims on flagship models 🙂
For a Toyota sedan, pricing is way too high.
It looks like a hatch back, then make it a hatch back.
it should have it's own new engine &
Hybrid System
The crown is a excellent vehicle and a class leader .❤👑. Excellent video kirk . Haters will always exist.
simping for cars that are not effceint like they can be for no good reason gets boring. i rather dream of ideals than dream about owning something like this
@@kalmmonke5037 well crown is excellent car and its sad that people like you talk like this.😂

Will the 2023 Toyota Crown be assembled in Japan Kurt?
Yes it is built in Japan
What a big miss that this does not come with a liftback….could have been a nice SUV alternative
Reminds me a of the Honda crosstour
Lucky to live in a country where this wonder of automotive Japanese industry, comes year after year, is my opinion this brand doesn’t fit in America.
Is like to try to adapt a ford mustang in Japan.
The philosophy behind the real crown is exclusively to Japanese way of thinking, which is opposed to America’s.
It is a sacrilege to bring such a unique brand to a society that doesn’t understand the value of this brand.
The real Toyota Crown is not just a car.
Is a blend of refinement , durability and luxury but on the interpretation of Japan philosophy.
How many will consider buying a GT 500 made in China?.
Every hands that touch that sheet metal, most be American, because there’s a vibes that comes from the love and pride of the guys who make this icon of American muscle.
Same thing happening with the Crown.
If you don’t understand what’s behind the Crown..?
Is a very prestigious brand
For all of that , I don’t think , this market idea will last.
Just like the Supra
Another Toyota Legend ,been misplaced.
Toyota lost so many customers with the lower stance on the camerys.
So who's the target demographic for this?
Avalon buyers? Lexus ES buyers?
@@KirkKreifels Exactly! Great looking car, but how many of your friends own a $50,000 sedan?? A Highlander Hybrid makes more sense for most people.
I’m 6’3 wonder if I fit lol
I'm buying one for grandma!
We need the Cressida!
My right ear is alone in hearing this one! Anyone else?
I like it, looks like a porsche and muscular model
They should of never put a cvt into the cheapest trim. It will push away alot of buyers ...not everyone can spend another 10 grand to just have a real automatic transmission .it might be a great vehicle but 50 grand?
While the Toyota Crown looks nice, I am still very happy with my 2020 Avalon XLE. I will not be changing my Avalon.
Why did my brain think this should be in Cyberpunk 2077
Good tech and bones, but lackluster interior and exterior design. Interior accoutrements lacking, minimal color selection, and trim dressings. I'll wait for the redesign of Lexus ES350 before I commit. Was hoping "The Crown" would live up to its moniker.
If any of this is real then the fact that the “wagon” model doesn’t come to the US is a tragedy.
looks kinda like a maxima but better
The Crown not being a lift back seems like a missed opportunity
Well, there are 3 versions of this car offered in Japan. A hatchback, a wagon, and a sedan....and they decided to bring the sedan version here to the states...smh
The Toyota two-motor planetary hybrid system also has been more efficient....
In the Camry LE it's rated for 52 MPG.
The Camry has same trunk room, same interior room, and same MPG, and $12,000 less.
Not as quiet though...
