I tend to use oils, and I also use a base coat of white on the feet. the bill, it depends on the color and how the color has drained. I don’t like using raw acrylics but I do use the white for the base. my uncle who I’ve been learning from/practicing with has an airbrush but he wasn’t too fond of it so we just hand paint everything lol. I’d love to learn how to airbrush
the beauty in this Art is that there are many different ways to achieve the same result,... and with sharing we can always make it better and better . thanks for your input .
@@ArtofTaxidermy of course! do you find it easier to take the feet off as opposed to leaving them on? we leave them attached and I cover the feathers with a paper towel or two to prevent paint getting on them.
@@ArtofTaxidermy do you notice any significant shrinkage in the skin around where the scaling starts that makes it hard to reattach? I’m sorry for all the questions and I thank you very much for chatting with me!
I was wondering. I have Balmex. I usually just use master’s blend for injecting bird feet. But I use Balmex for other things, I just wondered if I could mix Balmex and glycerin to inject instead of using master’s blend since it hardens so quickly.
reading your question again... I think I didnt answer accurately... well the feet are washed really good and dried, ,, and when they are injected the residue will be washed off ,, and by the time we spray the paint on them .. they are very clean.. (if thats what you meant).
Can you tell where you got the tool you used to wrap the legs...? the one that holds the thread... looks like it is homemade but cannot tell.... thank you!
Hmm…don’t think so … because you are not trying to only seal it .. the white colour of the print gives you an even neutral coloured surface so all your paints will show their real colour after that . I have had birds occasionally that their feet dehydrated to a pale yellow so evenly that I just didn’t find it necessary to prime it white. But most of the time you will have such different discolouration all over the feet that if you don’t even it out with white prime your paints won’t show their true colours evenly.
Reading your question again about clean coat... I think the clear coat will help your pan pastel adhere better to the aftermarket skull instead of sliding on it... I had more dried real feet in mind when I responded about white prime.
It seems like formaldehydes are a little different everywhere , I personally have bought them from different places with different mix in them. I would say start with 50/50 glycerine and formaldehyde if you still got shrinkage , reduce the formaldehyde by 10% at a time and replace it with alcohol.. the one I’m using today is only 20% formaldehyde ,30% alcohol and other ingredients that came with the formaldehyde and 50% glycerine.
If you use isopropyl alcohol instead of laquer thinner at first when you Inject it won't contaminate the leg much ,I Inject 2 times on legs becuase I like perfection, ill wash it with lacquer thinner after if dries an hour or so
@@ArtofTaxidermy yep, I found that if I use laquer right away it enters the holes I made for the injection of masters blend . I think laquer is more harmful for the masters blend and makes it not set up . But I found if you use isopropyl alcohol it just offs off and doesn't affect masters blend as bad ,I will use laquer once the leg sets up to wash off . I like your videos good to see another guys methods
Hello, can I use a mixture of 50% glycerin and 50% denatured alcohol? It is somewhat difficult to acquire formaldehyde, due to legal reasons in my country.
@@charliehunt2655 No worries Charlie,,, if you dont inject at all, the onlly thing is going to happen is shrinkage... up to the size of larger birds like hawks and eagles, nothing will happen if you dont inject them at all. all the tendons will just dry and shrink.. ..so try the alcohol and glycerin and share with us the result. Im sure other people love to hear your experience.. thats how we come up with new ideas.
First of all, thank you for these videos. We will inject 50% Formaldehyde and 50% glycerin. Is it true? Formaldehyde is not harmful to health? Should we use a mask?
Formaldehyde is a poison. Please handle with care. Just wear safety goggles, rubber gloves and don’t inhale it. If you touched it, wash your hand with water soon.
The work that you do is absolutely extraordinary.
Thank you.
Can you tell me about save the and dry the duck skin and foots wich injection or chamical use for it

you can try.. I dont know. but will balmex prvide preservation?
@@ArtofTaxidermy yeah, the Balmex is an embalming fluid
Do you have to clean them with something before painting to prevent the paint from flaking off or peeling
Not really.. and I’ve never had that happening. Acrylic paints are so hard to remove once they are dried , it’s unreal.

Do you always have to remove webbed bird feet? I’ve got a herring gull to do
I
Not always,, and certainly you dont have to... but it makes it easier for a cleaner job for injection and also painting.
hello, if we use glycerin and formaldehyde, will the feet stay flexible or dry?
Flexible for a day and then starting to get stiffer and stiffer day after day till fully dry after a week or two.
@@ArtofTaxidermy thank you 😊🙏
I've never use pastels before on duck feet. I can't wait to try. Question what do you use to seal the pastels. Or do you need to seal it
Oh yeah you need to seal it. I use Krylon matte finish spray. You can also use krylon workable fixative and it has a bit more shine to it.

Can I use formalin?
It will preserve but won’t keep its shape.
@@ArtofTaxidermy thank you 😊
Hello, can I use a mixture of 50% glycerin and 50% denatured alcohol? It is somewhat difficult to acquire formaldehyde, due to legal reasons in my country.
Not really. Alcohol won’t do much and it will evaporate. Formaldehyde is the chemical that preserves and glycerin is actually avoiding the shrinkage.

Sir how to screen and used what medicin

Great video! What kind of paint do you use? Could you get it from local craft stores or do you buy form taxidermy supply stores
There are a lot of air brush paints you can choose from but these ones are Hydromist brands I purchase from taxidermy suppliers.
What do you do with the bird skin while the feet are drying. After you fleshed and washed.
Bagged and frozen.
