    Great video Chris, compound meters is something I haven't really touched yet, normally just using 4/4 time. This video has helped me understand the concepts better

      you're not alone. we're just not exposed to compound meters outside of esoteric musics. i think a lot of very good musicians have 'time signature insecurity' about anything more than the 4/4 3/4 6/8 world that dominates.

    Thank you for this. I have been working in compound metered for some time and they are not new to me. I have a song that moves from 4/4 to 23/16 in the chorus. At first I thought I was playing it incorrectly and over time I realised that it this case I play it the some way and consistently. However this is not my question. I want to create beats and rythms in compound meter and want to be able to use the step sequencer as a tool. Is there a way of doing this that makes sense???. Thankyou in advance. Regards Ian

      Can you set the step length on your sequencer? Basically to the top number. An alternative would be to resign yourself to “interference of periodicity” where the different phrase/meter lengths take a long time to cycle back together. I like that but it ain’t for everyone. 😆

    Is there hypothetically a way to keep all the beats audible but maybe change the volumes to make the beats in each group louder and the off beats lower? Did I explain that right??😅 like for instance: ONE two three FOUR five SIX seven eight.. ???? Am I making sense here??😂

      there is. you can assign Velocity to the sounds... really make a big difference between them and it'll have the effect you've asked for.

      @@ImpliedMusic thank you so much for the advice!!! I still struggle deciding what time signature I need to write specific parts in.. mainly cause I use midi/quantizing to record drum parts. Buuuut a lot of the time the odd stuff confuses me because the triplet feels and all that don’t quite measure up on the piano roll. I think this might help though!!

    Hi Chris, thanks for your video, it was very helpful! I was just wondering if you could help me with one more thing. So, I need the tempo to be 57bpm. But with a 6/8 time signature, is it possible to associate the 57bpm to the dotted quarter note? This because I have the 6/8 grouped as a 3+3, but the metronome keeps answering to the quarter note. So I always end up having to do lots of math to find out the actual quarter note value, so my dotted quarter note gets the value that I want... ugh, is there an easier and more precise way to do this? Thank youuuuuu

      always a hassle. are you using Logic? every DAW handles this a little differently.

      ...and i get what you mean. in Logic we can easily get it to click on a dotted 1/4 group, but the display tempo and playback is still working off 1/4's per minute. getting it to dotted 1/4's per minute is currently beyond me, but i know who to ask.

    they should let us donate just like 10c. i know that sounds stupid, but if i wantes to give you something but i can only afford a quarter, and wouldn't that surely have more people giving you something? it all adds up... thanks man this is high quality stuff

    When choosing 6/8, my metronome in Logic Pro X plays every eight note instead of every dotted quarter note. How did you change that setting?

    • @ImpliedMusic
      @ImpliedMusic  2 года назад

      yeah, it's a stupid default. but you can type in groupings. it'll look like this 3+3. some menu diving involved.
