This is very inspirational! I've been binge-watching your channel. I can relate to Mary's firm answer at first: 'no, I won't ever run a marathon'. Yet, I enrolled in my first marathon for October 2023. I have been training consistently 3 times a week for 4 months and had a semi-marathon planned on April the 2nd to see where I was. Unfortunately, I got a heel spur on both feet and was advised to cancel it. Since I'm also here for the long term (but you helped convince me I really was so thanks!!), I'm just going to rest and fix it (hopefully). I hope I can still train for and run the marathon in 6 months. I know it was 3 years ago and you achieved so many other things since then but gosh, 3h36 for a marathon is just beyond incredible, let alone for a first one! Cheers and thank you again! From another Mary from another country.
Loved this video! Mary you are an inspiration. I had hit a really low point in my life and started to try to get in shape a little over 2 months ago. I couldn’t run .4 of a mile. Now I am running about 20 miles a week and growing every week. I found your videos and love them. Keep it up!
Don't know if you remember me, but I commented on your video about finding your 'why' in running. I had said that I hated running with a burning passion but did it anyway. What ended up happening, is that I went for a tempo run and had severe breathing issues to the point of suffocating and ended up in the hospital. Turns out, I have had exercise induced asthma my entire life. Once given an inhaler, ALL the things I hated about running had gone. It was the asthma the entire time, it wasn't running. Pleased to say, I am now running 10k regularly and it is quite pleasant haha. I have since registered for my first full marathon next February. Just wanted to let you know! Your videos have been an inspiration for me and have really helped me in my journey.
Hey! Yes I totally remember. I loved your honesty about hating running 😂 well that all seems to make sense as well. Who would love doing something that makes them feel like they’re suffocating!! Sorry to hear you ended up in hospital but I’m glad you came through stronger and are actually enjoying the experience now!! You must be if you’ve signed up for a marathon. Love it 😊👍🏻
I never really comment on RUclips videos but I've been following your channel and Mary's journey and I couldn't be happier for her! 3:36 is an amazing time and I can wait to see Mary crush the London Marathon!!! Well done guys, you are truly an inspiration!
Thank you so much, Maria. That’s really nice to hear and means so much that you’ve taken the time to comment. We really appreciate it. Very kind of you 😊
I dont even know you and i feel proud. Found this channel because im running my first marathon in 5 weeks & the tips you've given me have been immeasurable, so thank you. 3:36, crazy fast. 👍
Thanks Steve! Or do you prefer Steven?! Which marathon are you doing? I’m excited for you!! Just come up with a plan, stick to it and smile your face off the whole way round 😃
I doubt i'll smile as much as Mary, but i'll give it a go. Manchester marathon in 4 weeks. Did 18 miles last weekend, might try 20 this weekend & thats my longest run done. Thanks to your vids i know its gonna hurt, but might as well embrace it. After seeing Mary, might be a good idea to take the monday off. 🙈
@@ThisMessyHappy - I'm doing ok. Swimming a fair amount but not running or biking enough. Just swimming and giving away goggles over on my channel 😉 Also, looking forward to your race recap video. Hope you're at least a little bit sore after smoking that run on very little training. I think the title should be "Racing a marathon on Zero training". Or "Can I break 3 hours in the marathon without training at all?". People are going to click on that thing fast and you can always blame me if the title is too misleading. 😆
I know this video is 2yrs old, but I just wanted to say this video inspired me to pick up running during the pandemic. I have RA and a ton of knee/ankle injuries - I never thought I could handle a marathon… but I hoped maybe someday. I ran my first ever marathon this month, 4:11 was my time - so still got a ways to go before catching up to Mary! But I am super proud of it nonetheless, and I don’t think I ever would have started without this video 🙏🏻 thank you so much, both of you.

A brilliant achievement Mary. I love how positive and smiley you are even with the post race pain!! I ran my first half marathon on Sunday, Brighton, no sunshine for me just 50mph winds 🙄 Like you I gave up running due to terrible hip pain. Great effort mary outstanding and you aswell ben! 👍 you know I had had my wisdom tooth out 10 days ago well it got infected after a few days so still not been for a run in two weeks at the weekend 😩 pains just starting to go so hoping to run soon and after watch this itching to get out.
Pretty well, although I'd like to fit an extra run in per week. I've managed 19 miles as my longest run so far, which was a real mental battle, but it felt good to get that distance completed. Half marathon race on Sunday and then 5 big weeks before taper! Are you both running London?
No just me this year and hopefully both next year (depending on whether I can qualify good for age again). Just keep winning the mental battles, dude. Soon they become the norm 💪🏻
That's a brilliant time for Mary's first marathon! I haven't done a race for ages, and I have my second half marathon in a months time. How do you find the race pace? My garmin has a race time predictor but I think it's a bit optimistic. All my runs are at a easy level (conversational pace).
Thanks mate. Very kind. What do you mean by finding race pace? Do you mean a pace to aim for? I’ll be honest and say for the most part it’s a lot of trial and error really but a good rule of thumb is for a half marathon you could run it at 7 or 8/10 effort. 10ks are usually 9/10 and 5ks are pretty much all out. Rule of thumb anyway
Great effort💪 I'm running my first marathon in 5 weeks and my 1/2 marathon time is around 1:35. What do you think would be a realistic time/pace to aim for. Cheers 👍
Hi Shane, honestly my opinion is aim to finish and feel like maybe you could have pushed a bit harder. Marathons are so tricky but I know I’d rather finish with a smile and thinking I could have pushed more than finishing absolutely broken on the verge of collapse because I went too hard. Marathons are the very embodiment of trial and error 😊👍🏻
@@ThisMessyHappy Thanks Ben I think I really needed to hear that. Ever since I signed up everything for me has been about getting a sub 4hr time and anything less would be deemed a failure. I know I just need to check my ego at the door and be happy to finish regardless of the time. Cheers for the reply 👍

Hey guys! Just found your channel a couple of weeks ago and I've loving it! Couple, and running goals you too! So nice to see Ben getting emotional at the end of Mary's race! Keep going!
Thanks Pedro. That’s really kind of you. Thanks for commenting and for being part of the journey 😊👍🏻
Well done Mary! Such a inspiration to watch :-)
Thanks Joanna 😊
congrats on your marathon Mary!! This is such a huge accomplishment! I've got a 10 mile race in April and that'll be my longest run. Can't wait to see what you do in the future.
Thanks Mallory. Where is the 10 miler?! Good luck! 😊
@@ThisMessyHappy It's in the US capitol Washington, DC. Cherry Blossom 10 mile run! I have a lot of friends that live in DC and run it, so I'll be driving 6 hours to run it with them! Hope y'all come do races in the US some day!!
Mallory Kobler don’t worry about that! We race in the US every year 😍 we love it. Got NYC marathon in November! Can’t wait 😊
I’m so happy for you Mary 😊
Thanks Sophie. I feel like Marys personal secretary but she says thanks too 😊
Amazing job. I ran my first in Celebration FL a month ago. You are a beast.
Sweet! And thanks. We LOVE celebration!! How did it go?
@@ThisMessyHappy 3:57:30 Hit my goal of sub-4. I am looking forward to the next one.

Awesome job!
Thanks 😊
Last thing I can do when running is smile 😳 anyone that runs this far is made of metal 💪🏻
Anyone can, dude. A bit of consistency, luck and positivity and you’re there 🤟🏼
Big congrats Mary! That’s a very impressive time! 😊🏅 💪
Thanks Richard. Girl done good 😂
Amazing what a good time! My plan is to run my first marathon next year, and your video's are so helpful thank you for that
Thanks Nicole! I’m really glad you’re on board. Where is your marathon?

In Rotterdam next year
Amazing Mary, congratz!!
Thanks so much 😊
Well done Mary your awesome:). Thanks Ben for sharing this as this inspires me to keep getting better. Great feeling and super happy for you both.
Thanks buddy. Really kind of you. I see you’re working through the back catalogue 😂 there’s some rubbish further back there ha ha I call it the process of growth
So excited for you! Congrats!
Thank you 😊
Congratulations! An Amazing achievement! 😊
Thanks Luke 😊
Great effort mary outstanding and you aswell ben! 👍 you know I had had my wisdom tooth out 10 days ago well it got infected after a few days so still not been for a run in two weeks at the weekend 😩 pains just starting to go so hoping to run soon and after watch this itching to get out.
Oh no James that sounds awful! Hope you get out there soon, buddy. And thanks for the kind words as well 😊
Amazing Mary well done! My first marathon is London this year and the tips and videos from you both really helps!
Awesome Gavin! Hopefully I’ll see you at London. How’s the training going?
Pretty well, although I'd like to fit an extra run in per week. I've managed 19 miles as my longest run so far, which was a real mental battle, but it felt good to get that distance completed. Half marathon race on Sunday and then 5 big weeks before taper! Are you both running London?
No just me this year and hopefully both next year (depending on whether I can qualify good for age again). Just keep winning the mental battles, dude. Soon they become the norm 💪🏻
@@ThisMessyHappy thanks Ben, enjoy the recovery this week!
you helped me finish my first half marathon!! congrats!
Ahh that’s so cool to hear, Ellie. Which one did you do? How did it go? And what’s next 😊
Great Job!
Thanks Jon 😊
Great video guys! Congratulations Mary that was an incredible time! Just wondering what brand your sunglasses are, they are fabulous!
Hey, thanks so much! She did well didn’t she! Mary tells me they’re Ray Bans 😎👍🏻
Brilliant!!!!
nice editing man! all the way!
So proud I have to try not to cry on camera… and cuts to an entire montage of Mary walking like a zombie! 😂😂😂 Couple goals
loved this!
Brettski! Your first official comment!! 😍
Thing I hate about races is the quiet moment after the start when the mass of other runners filters out 🏃♂️
Ha ha that deep breath moment. I love that funnily enough. The moment before battle 😂
This Messy Happy yea deep breath moment 😄 my worse part cos I’m thinking the fun bits stopped 😳
Awesome time for a first marathon
Well done.
Thanks mate 👍🏻😊
@@ThisMessyHappy You are more than welcome. I'm on FB if you want the messages to be a bit personal, (Spencer Jefferson Dallas Robinson), all the best to you both.
3:36 is 🤯. I am finding it hard to balance the speed and the motivation.
Fuck yeah Mary (sorry my french)
But that is amazing.
Mary is now my goal and inspiration for my first marathon in November
Ahhh french, the language of love 😂 you’re going to smash your marathon! How’s the injury coming along?
@@ThisMessyHappy seems to be fine.
Could probably hurt in longer distances but yesterday I did 10km and only felt it on the last 100m
Tremendous stuff. The trick is to come down the stairs backwards.
Ha ha or slide on the belly 😂
how fast did the man run?
He did ok. The Achilles held up and he cruised home in 3:06. Video coming on Sunday 🤟🏼
3.36 for a first marathon is actually ridiculous 😂
She’s a ridiculous kinda gal 😂
Congratulations !! amazing achievement!! 💪💪💪
Thanks Dani 😊
