@@nathanj3528 The only thing left is for him to desperately try to tear Kaladin down or kill him, seemingly. Kaladin's a reminder that Moash had something good in the found family of Bridge 4 and he chose to betray it, moreover that Moash IS responsible for his actions and that giving Odium his pain and guilt doesn't cause them not to exist. He's fixed on the idea that "if I just destroy this link to how things were or could have been different, I will finally be free to be my 'true' uncaring merciless killer self." But that line of reasoning didn't work Kylo Ren either :P I do wonder if Odium might now (be able to) find ways to use Moash more intelligently than he did before.

Kaladin's Fourth Idea - we got so much buildup and the emotional distress that Kal went through especially in this book made all the more amazing, going further with Syl not knowing them
Dalinar's You cannot have my pain - just amazing buildup for the character, the realization that we need to accept the past and become better
Maya's WE CHOSE - incredible moment that gives as a glimpse of the past and a promise for the future, with all the deadeyes having a chance to return

I also think we miss a lot of critical scenes between Adolin and Shallan. Their plot line still worked for me but I wish we saw Shallan reuniting with Testament and telling Adolin that secret. It would be nice to know what is going on in Adolin's head more since he is seemingly very accepting of a lot, but at some point, I feel like he is going to just break.
Also, I believe Sanderson has said the novella between books 4 and 5 will be called Horneater, which makes me think we will get Rock's story going home in that book.

I think Sanderson leaving out the scene of Shallan revealing the truth to Adolin is genius. She was so obsessed with him rejecting who she was when she told him the truth, but it was such a non-thing for him that it didn’t even make it into the book. He loves her and accepts who she is. I love their relationship.

There were so many great moments in this book! I got choked up multiple times. Tien and Kaladin talking, Teft's final words, etc. It was just all so good. But I also just love Wit's quote about “but then it will get better. Then it will get worse again. Then better. This is life, and I will not lie by saying every day will be sunshine. But there will be sunshine again, and that is a very different thing to say. That is truth. I promise you, Kaladin: You will be warm again.” Such a perfect way of explaining something.

Does anyone else maybe think that Timbre could be Eshonai? That’s the impression I got from the ending, especially this passage: “So... this is my soul?” SOME WOULD CALL IT THAT...SOME WOULD SAY IT IS A SPREN FORMED BY THE POWER YOU LEFT, IMPRINTED WITH YOUR MEMORIES.
That would also make Timbre’s reaction to Venli reuniting with Jaxlim make more sense, idk just a theory. I loved this book so much.

My heart leapt into my throat when I read the passage about Rock! I calmed down after reminding myself that Brandy Sandy wouldn’t kill such an important character off-screen, but the way that was worded seemed so ominous.
I’m also intrigued about the implications of the spren experiments in the physical realm and how that will play out in later books. You made great points that I haven’t heard many others chat about.
I was an emotional wreck for the majority of part 5, so I personally loved hearing you express that! I was already sobbing about Teft, and then the scene with Tien just sent me. I had no idea what the 4th ideal would be, and in hindsight I feel silly for not expecting it. I’m happy that I didn’t guess it though because I feel that it made this scene all the more powerful and emotional for me. We have watched Kaladin struggle since the very first book over people he couldn’t save, so this was just *chefs kiss*.
Great wrap up to the series, and I look forward to watching more videos from you 🙂

I absolutely loved Navani's line that you said was your favourite, but the one that stuck with me for an entirely different reason was "I promise you, Kaladin: You will be warm again" from Wit at the end of The Dog and the Dragon. • @dennisyoungblood349

  • @patrickhill8494
    @patrickhill8494 3 года назад +27

    *SPOILERS AND SWEARING*
Oh god, this last part of the book had me just outright sobbing so many times. I had felt that Teft was going to die this book and this was the main reason I considered that Kaladin could legitimately become Odium's champion. I cried so much when he died and the scene where Kaladin first reacts to seeing Teft dead. The scene with Tien also had me sobbing onto my book. Quite a few pages of my book have smeared ink because of all crying it made me do 😭.
I have to say that my favourite phrase in the book is from The Dog and the Dragon chapter in part 4, really my favourite paragraph, where Wit leads up to the "You will be warm again" line. I've fought with severe chronic depression for more than 20 years and that paragraph hit me so hard because of it. When I'm in the depths of an episode of severe, numbing, deadening depression I can't even remember what it feels like not to be in such a state, even with meds. It takes other people helping me remember. That's what Wit does for Kaladin here, and even just writing about it is making me cry 😭😭😭. On a happier note, my favourite, non-emotional part of the book is the entire interaction between Wit and Design in this chapter. When Wit say, "This is a dream, idiot, it's not real." and Design pipes in with, "I'm real! Not imaginary at all! Unfortunately, I am irrational! Ha ha!" it brought me so much joy on soooo many levels 🤣. The play on this being a very real dream sequence (probably taking place on Braize), the fact that Cryptics' true names are numbers and that Design is actually talking about her name being a Real number, not an Imaginary number (the square root of a negative number for those of you not in the math loop), AND that her name is in fact an Irrational number (a number that cannot be expressed as a fraction, for those of you that don't remember, and has a decimal expansion onto infinity). She's having this wonderful side commentary that is founded in the actual conversation between Wit and Kaladin, but is going off on a tangent about something only loosely related through the semantics of homonyms. It's a beautiful piece of humour that exhibits exactly how my mind works and the weird little tangents I go on and find hilarious; a joke/tangent often not followed by others in the conversation 😭. If anyone wants more math humour, look up Bo Burnham's song "New Math" or Stand-Up Maths on RUclips!
With regards to the scene where Taravangian kills Rayse and becomes Odium's vessel, my reaction was: HOLYFUCKINGSHITIWASAFRAIDOFTHIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With the nature of Nightblood's level of Investiture, I believe there had been a WOB where he commented on Nightblood not being powerful enough to destroy a Shard but said RAFO about the vessel and, as such, this fed further theory crafting in the community about Nightblood's ability to kill a vessel. An important note: Nightblood hasn't always been this powerful but has grown in power. This means that he doesn't destroy Investiture like anti-void/storm/lifelights or consume it into some void of uselessness, but instead consumes it and adds it to his power. Think about how much Investiture it must have consumed in killing Rayse and how much its power has grown as a result. While Brandon has commented in the past about Nightblood not being able to destroy a Shard, it may be able to do so in the future. As soon as Taravangian started obsessing of the sword and manipulating Szeth this god damn scene is what I was so afraid of. He will most likely be a much more dangerous threat than Rayse ever could have been as Odium's vessel. I can't help but feel the Cultivation fucked up real hard here. By her own admission, Taravangian becoming a "better" vessel for, and better able to deal with and not be influenced by, Odium was her hope and really only had a chance of success. I hope she has another contingency plan aside from Lift becoming her new vessel to prevent her from being Shattered should TOdium kill her current vessel, because I think she could have just doomed every other Shard in the Cosmere.
Also, while I definitely buy into the TOdium, DHonour, and LCultivation theory, I'm more convinced than ever that Dalinar is either going to become a combination of Honor and Odium, Honour and Odium and Cultivation, OR basically reforge Adonalsium by the end of the second half of the Stormlight archive. In Oathbringer where Dalinar says "I am Unity.", Odium's reaction of "No, I killed you!" is a misdirection. Rayse is obviously panicked and his mind immediately jumps to Honor, but the fact that Unity is so capitalized indicates to me the likelyhood of that being the name of a newly created multi-Shard entity like Harmony on Scadrial. That being said, I think this is foreshadowing, not Dalinar already combining two Shards.
I think we can all finally agree at this point that the leader of the Ghostbloods is Kelsier's cognitive shadow. Theory. Fucking. Proven! "Lord of Scars"? He is the ONLY Cosmere character with such a pseudonym. Of fucking course he became the leader of another secret society/cult/religion 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. On that note, this book was such a treasure trove of Cosmere lore, like the names of more Shards and Harmony's lore dumping, at least two Feruchemists on Roshar, AND an actual method to DESTROY Investiture! That single piece of lore is literally world-breaking for the Cosmere. It makes sense with matter and anti-matter in real life, so likely there's also a light and anti-light asymmetry in the Cosmere, similar to how our unviserse is able to exist, so who knows if ALL Investiture could ever be destroyed, but HOLYFUCKINGSHITWTF. This seems to me like this is potentially either BEYOND Shattering OR is related to the process by which Shards can be Shattered.
My heart goes out for Navani and her Imposter Syndrome. I love Raboniel's character for helping her through it mostly, and will always hold a special anatagonist-place in my literature-heart lol.
I could literally write a few papers on this book so I'll end it here, but damn! What a great book. I think this is my favourite book throughout the Cosmere anthology as a whole, but if Sanderson keeps this up it likely won't remain so!

All these plot points: Eshonai exploring, Dalinar asking the Stormfather to show mercy, and the rhythms of Roshar come together. My favourite line in the book probably has to be "We! CHOSE!". That whole buildup section of Maya screaming, screeching and literally struggling with all the unfairness, with the fact that if she doesn't tell the truth not just for Adolin, but even for herself, it's gonna doom all of humanity... this got me shivers down the spine. I was both crying and having massive goosebumps throughout this whole part, I felt like I could almost hear and feel Maya's struggle that finally ended with her managing to deal with all the difficulty of speaking. This was something else.
As for second and third most favourite parts/lines, it has to be Kal's 4th Ideal and Navani's 1st ideal ofc. But I don't know which of them would be second and which one third.

I think this book had the best epilogue of the four. As an audience, pretty much throughout the whole Cosmere we see Hoid/Wit almost always fully in control of his situation. To see what T-Odium did to him is such a Worf effect moment (puts power level in perspective REAL QUICK). It is the first time in a long time that I as a reader have been legit terrified for what comes next. Taravangian is the perfect storm that *SPOILER* described in part 2 - an extremely cunning Vessel mixed with the power's Intent. The whole Cosmere should be very, very afraid.

Rhythm of War fixed a major issue that I had with Oathbringer that I hadn't released til a recent read. Everyone felt too convenient for the cast and almost felt invulnerable at the end. It took quite a bit of tension out of that final battle. That's not the case with Stormlight 4. Nor does it seem it will be an issue going forward. The cast felt so vulnerable in this book and this made the big emotional moments hit even harder.

I love all 4 of the stormlight books but this one might be my favorite. It made me cry twice.

I literally bawled when Kaladin said the 4th ideal. The last time I bawled like this was when Elend and Vin died in THOA.

Can confirm, that was very sad but you might want to put a spoiler warning on that bomb

I love your hair! (not simping :D )
EDIT: That IS the coolest line, I'm actually the person that added the quote on Goodreads. :D
EDIT2: I'd say this is my second favorite behind WoR and just edging out WoK.

This was such a fun series of chats, thank you! I definitely agree that there is something more going on with Rock's situation that has yet to be revealed.
Fave moments... Yeah Tien "you're good enough, for *me*". Hoo boy 😢

I had always thought that Gavilar had stored his soul in one of his weird spheres and would be Odium's champion but, now that we know about the anti-investiture spheres, and that Heralds can't be contained in them, I'm less confident in this theory.

No but imagine if Dalinar is waiting for odium's champion to come up. And gavilar pulls up. Big huge oof.
