Love that you added extra games on the end! My most anticipated TTRPG is Dolmenwood but I'm also excited about the Stormlight Archives, Daggerheart, and Legend in the Mist. Wilderfeast was definitely on my radar and I had originally planned on backing it but just knew it would be hard to table with the groups I play with now. Great coverage!

@davidmorgan6896 Haha, I once played with a 'min/max' guy and introduced him to GURPS. Told him you can't really do that in GURPS as you basically need a well-rounded character to survive. He tried to prove me wrong (we were playing 500 point characters in a sort of Fantasy game, but with super powers or something.. the GM was new...) and he spent all his points in Altered Timerate so he could move really fast... but otherwise, it was just a blacksmith... it was quite silly. But for sure, he never figured out how to cheat the system. I found fun tweaks that made a 1st level character practically unhittable in 2nd AD&D, all within rules. (-2 AC at 1st, with an 18 Dex, Splintmail armor and both proficiencies in single weapon style) this was before armor had a max dex bonus... 😜

    • @davidmorgan6896
      @davidmorgan6896 11 месяцев назад +1

@@slaapliedje In Hero System, very similar to GURPS, you can optimise, but it always comes back to bite. You can take advantage of rounding up when buying stats or powers and so be more effective, but that just makes it harder to advance with experience. You could do what your friend did and buy high Speed, so you go first and act more often, but you'll just burn endurance and spend all your time catching your breath.
I love point buy systems, but the character you want is alway just out of reach; which is as it should be.

Very much looking forward to seeing if Daggerheart gets a free public demo, like the QuickStart for Candela Obscura.
ICON from Massif Press and Tom Bloom (of Lancer fame) looks to have a very cool combination of the social systems from that game and FF Tactics style combat. Haven’t seen a release date noted for it, but would love to see that come out this year too.

I didn't notice it until i finally broke down and bought the Pendragon Starter Set instead of just ogling it in shelves and took a proper look, but Mark Smylie's art on the box front was instantly recognizable. I loved his Artesia graphic novels' (and, to an extent, its Fuzion-powered ttrpg translation) depictions of medieval fantasy battle and can't think of a better artist to be translating Arthurian legend into art. I hope the core book will be chock full of his work.

One classic RPG returning in 2024 is the Ars Magica Definitive Edition. It has only just been announced but, like Pendragon, is a GAMA award winner and considered one of the Best 100 Hobby Games of all time. Basically, it did Harry Potter before that was even a thing and still has arguably the best magic system in any RPG. It innovated the Verb + Noun format of spell casting (you can design your own magical spells and styles, even spontaneously in the game) along with a number of other concepts. Its creators went on to create D&D 3rd edition and Vampire: The Masquerade, respectively, and it was an early example of a independently designed, narrative game. It’s new ‘Definitive’ edition looks to be crowdfunded in the fall of 2024, so keep a look out!

Being of Backer of Eat The Reich, having read the book and mastered a few games, I can safely say that it was a total bust for me and both of my tables. This is not a TTRPG, this is kinda a streamlined experience where 99% of the situations ends up in the same boring and imbalanced fights and where players, once they understood the rules, can exploit the system in many ways. This game will only appeal to tables where players loves to hear themselves describing their actions with no need for liberty, choice, nor roleplay.
The book is cool looking though.

When you said Monster Hunter I was like, but there's two versions of Monster Hunter International. Then I realized that you meant the video game and not the novels by Larry Correia. The premise of the novels is that monsters (vampires, werewolves, zombies, et cetera) are real and that there's a bounty system on them. MHI hunts the monsters and collects the bounties.
There's two officially licensed ways to play, one using the HERO system and the other uses the Savage Worlds Adventure Edition ruleset.

I'm looking forward to seeing Stonetop. I had learned about it somewhat recently, but am eager to see a game that'll in some ways be the upgrade from DW that has been needed for a while. At least it *may* be that. I think either way I'll probably like it.
The Diablo and Assassin's Creed RPGs irritate me. They feel like the TTRPG version of themed Monopoly games. I'd be happy to not see them as their own dedicated RPGs. Maybe as system agnostic source books? But yeah, no one actually cares about any of the AC lore, it's mostly garbage and I think most people skip or snooze through the extensive dialog scenes in the video games... because they are dull and needlessly longwinded, and there are like thousands of them in every game.

Given the trouble Palladium has had with their past reprint Kickstarters, I would not get too excited about TMNT and Other Strangeness. I started to Kickstart it, but backed out when I saw the states of their two previous projects. I am still torn. I definitely wanted the alternate covers and the minis/dice.
Break looks great. And I was already looking forward to Triangle Agency.
Daggerheart is iffy for me. I was interested at first, and still am about most of the system. But it's initiative rules sound extremely dubious to me, and more so the reasons behind them. Also, hearing Spenser talk about the game gave me the same pause as a few of the entries on this list. If you claim D&D is only for dungeon crawls (or worse attack it), then I have questions on multiple levels. If you have to attack some other system, it doesn't rub me the right way, nor does it make me confident you can stand on your own. And if you claim D&D (even if it 4E or 5E) is only for hack and slash, I wonder how well you read the books and played the system, and what kind of campaigns you've played. All of which makes me wonder what kind of game you have made. I will probably still get Daggerheart when it launches (if only for the 2d12 system). But it will have to do a lot to convince me to table it.

TMNT uses the same system it always did, which, even after I mastered it decades ago - was a completely lame system. Nothing about the system enhances gameplay, same category as D&D in that regard, rules built off wargaming and statistics don't do anything good for storytelling and drama.

I came here to negatively comment about all the modern bullshit ttrpgs that would undoubtedly be on this list and then direct people to old school quality instead.. however.. you actually did cover Dolmenwood.. sort of, at least mentioned it. Soo... carry on.
