And then, over the bill when when they dined with the Chicken's wife.

A later episode implied Ernie did it on purpose after a time traveling Peter punched him a decade prior

It’s so interesting, because in all subsequent fights Ernie is the catalyst and usually gets the first shot on Peter. He even attacks Peter when he least expects it, almost like he wants to get revenge for (almost) killing him.

Because when people fight, they grab, pinch, slap, sometimes bite, and rarely punch and kick. Also if there were people around they would try break up the fight. U would need to have super strenength and power to endure such beatings.
