I was around watching Edmund McMillen code games for game jams back when those games rocked the Independent Video Game scene. What I wanted to do when I was working my way through my Computer Science Degree was make video games. I actually ended up learning how to do as much, but nothing I could make would ever be really as good as some of the other legends like Edmund McMillen. They used be able to do everything (art, music, coding) all in like 48 hours and have a viable concept down at least. I'm a munch slower thinker than those guys, and when I'm coding I'm a bit more pokey than them I guess. I'm always looking through references to understand the behavior of a function or an object, and they have ALL of that stuff down in their heads through practice. TL;DR I knew about and played The Binding of Isaac way back when it came out, because during that time I was trying to make Indie Games too. The best way for me to learn the art was to study others who do it, and do it well.
