i'm no calc expert but that blue might be a type of non-photo blue which photocopiers at the time couldn't reproduce (I don't know if they can now). Some of my engineering notebooks use a similar blue so the grid lines disappear when photocopied
I figured it must be something like that!
This is the best calculator documentary I’ve ever seen!
Thank you! I know it's a competitive field so that means a lot!
This is what I love about RUclips. You can find some obscure documentary type videos, covering extremely specific things. Not even the old history Channel could do this. Bravo, subscribed, would love to see more!
Thank you!
An un-ironically brilliant love letter to the TI-108. Time well spent!!
Thank you, Joshua! I'm gonna miss walking through the woods like a total freak with my TI-108s, but it was all worth it!
Can we talk about the song at the end?! This takes #SpreadMathLove to a whole new level 😍
I’m shaking with excitement, thank you! ❤️
This video isn't long enough.
I know, I got a bit lazy and cut 8,000 words from the script, I hope people will forgive me!

I LOVE YOU FOR THIS!
I literally just bought one of these for nostalgic reasons.
I figured if I’m gonna get a calculator might as well get this dope ass one from my childhood.
I looked it up just to see if someone talked about it and boom a HOUR LONG DOCUMENTARY about it. You are the one true king ☝️👑
I can't believe RUclips took two years to recommend this to me! I love it!
Thank you!
Not the documentary we deserved, but the one we needed most.
That’s how I felt. I saw the TI-108 and knew I had at least 1 hour of things to say about it!
I did not realize I was contributing to a masterpiece when you asked to use my content. As a fellow TI-108 fan, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this.
Thank you - Calaquin! That means a lot, this was a labor of love unlike anything else I've done, so glad you enjoyed!
It's funny as my Dad had a HP-65 at home I remember seeing it long before I ever saw the TI-108... that thing was a Reverse Polish Notation beast
A true cinemagic masterpiece! I can’t wait to watch it
❤️ Thank you! It's an emotional journey, so I'd get tissues with the bucket of popcorn!
Excellent documentary. I just purchased a TI-108 mainly because of the display. I dislike the tall-and-thin displays that is common with basic calculators (like the Casio you showed [and that I have]).
BTW, the reason for the blue ink in the Activity Book is that it called drop-out blue ink. It is visible on the page but when you copy the page anything in that blue ink doesn't appear on the copy.
There were forms I had to type on using early Optical Character Reader (OCR) technology that required me to type using a special font that the system could read but could not see the form (which was used as a guide for typing) since it was in the same blue ink.
I enjoyed this so much more than I anticipated. This was great!!!
Thanks so much, Luke! While nothing hits quite like "My TI-108 and Me", I have a playlist of other math songs if you're looking for more vibes! ruclips.net/p/PLztBpqftvzxW7a66b0dJPgknWsfbFQP-c
As a mexican kid from the nineties cant relate to the nostalgia however it was really entertaining. Great job Sean, keep making this kind of videos.
Thanks a lot, Alejandro! It’s a very nostalgic calculator to a lot of people, but even without nostalgia, I think it really is a classic. Much more to come, though this project has absolutely exhausted me!
Awesome documentary-- so well done! I found this via a retweet on Twitter. Subscribed. I'm a fan.
Thanks so much! If I lock myself in a cellar for a month with a TI-30, maybe I'll make a documentary on that too sometime! Much to look forward to!
This is absolutely beautiful.
Thank you! ❤️
Fun vid Bro. Made my day👍
My mom has used this for years and still keeps one in her purse to this day. I always remember her bringing it out when we went grocery shopping together. Good times.
That’s awesome! I don’t remember what my mother used for calculations at the store. But I have had Ti108s all over the place since shooting this documentary. I went through TSA the other day actually, and the man asked “Anything in your pockets” and I felt around and went “Oops, just my calculator” and removed it and gave it to him. The people behind me in line had a real chuckle at that.
I just graduated with degrees in physics and astronomy last month and while it's true my TI-84 got me through exams in class, when it came to the basic arithmetic I still struggle with doing work at home, my TI-108 was incredibly instrumental to my success. Not even a joke, it's a great calculator
Congrats on the graduation! And thank you for the additional TI-108 endorsement, it’s true - everybody really does love the TI-108!
@@WrathofMath ugg i'm sorry i can't have it........
I loved this video, a lot of recent history. I was born in 1981 so I was in this wonderful transition between semidigital devices (VHS) into full digital gadgets with no mechanical parts (iPhone). This model seems to be studerly standing the test of time. I didn't know it before to be honest. I have been a Casio guy all my life. It's a lot of fun how this product carries such good things and nice experiences. Again, brilliant video.
Thanks so much! That’s an exciting time to grow up, and I’m glad you enjoyed it even though you’re a Casio guy haha! I hope people from all walks of calculator experience will find something to love about the TI-108 and its history!
Beautiful
I really enjoyed watching this video from start to finish. I had to watch it in two sittings, but as someone else said, this video is not long enough. 😉 Well presented and great infotainment! The yellow border around the video was a touch of genius! But hey, you need to do something about that "104" on the front door. 🤔 Move in to 108 if you have not done so already! 😄 Then you can replace the "Intro" with "Enter the TI-108". Please consider making a TI-108 version of Elton John's song I'm Still Standing! 😎 A TI-108 music video!
Thanks so much! Those are great ideas! Unfortunately I have moved to a unit titled "B2", but it's 108 in my heart!
Fantastic video!!!! Bravooo!!! I collect a variety of calculators and this is a part of my collection. Fond memories from my childhood learning. Any others in the works? Perhaps TI-89? 92? Nspires?
Thanks a lot Arthur! None others in the works for now, honestly the TI-108 is singular in my interest in it, although this project did get me into collecting calculators. I have such fond memories of the TI-108 that I don't have for any other calcs. But, I did recently start a "Math Library" series of videos where I am looking at math books, and will also look at all sorts of calculators and other math stuff too in the laid back discussion format you see in the current book videos: ruclips.net/p/PLztBpqftvzxXDxjBmk_7gvTaldyLK8sXS
I like basic four function calculators too and have a few questions (to be performed on the TI-108) which may interest you: 1) Calculate sin 37 degrees. If you can do this, then you can do cosine and tangent as well. 2) Calculate log 37. Now we see why having the square root is useful, and you can do ln as well. 3) How do you calculate 2^365 without pressing the equals button 364 times? 4) The TI-108 does not have an MC button. How do you store the result of a calculation to the memory when the memory is occupied by another number? 5) What is the biggest number you can calculate on the TI-108? Hint: It is not 99,999,999 x 99,999,999. 6) Bonus question: For constant calculations, why is the order of input reversed for multiplication?
Whoa! There’s a lot to have fun with, maybe we should start putting together a TI-108 activity book 2! Thanks for those, I’ll give ‘em a try!
Hi ! Would you continue your graph theory lectures , I know you have already completed most of the basics and even intermediate level graph theory. It would be great if you can do some more advanced things like Extremal Graph theory!
Hi Prabhat, thanks for the comment! I absolutely will continue my graph theory series, I have at least several hundred more lessons to create for it before I am satisfied. Now that I have this documentary out of my system, I can move on to other things!
i only ever used the TI-30x IIS 😧
One thing that almost no one seems to know is how to turn one of these off (without covering the solar cell or waiting.) I'm not sure if it works on later revisions but I think holding down On/C, 4, and 5 (or might've been On/C,5, and 6) and then releasing all 3 keys turns off the first generation TI-108, if I still remember correctly --- figured this out in school several decades ago!
you are awesome!
Thanks aash! This was a really fun project to work on!
Best thing before bed!
I couldn’t agree more!
50:42 The answers were in non-repro blue, a special color that wasn't picked up by Xerox machines! All you have to do is make the copies in an old enough copier, and the blue parts automatically disappear from the facsimiles.
Man do I remember those yellow racks of those blue calculators in the back of certain math classes - maybe around middle/Jr highschool years.
I think I used one a total of 2 times ever. I was educated in alabama public schools. Also, every math classroom did NOT have their own set. There were maybe a total of 40, and they were passed around to the few math classes whenever they got to that section of their textbook or whenever the teacher decided they needed them.
Basically the same as our textbooks. We weren't allowed to take those home due to having so few. And boy they were OLD textbooks. You should've seen the computers and programs (& the books! Wish i would've "accidentally" taken one home... ) for our typing class that we had in Jr high around 05-06 lmao.... all of it had to be no newer than 1990!
Edit: I'm pretty sure alabama schools definitely are still using the overhead projectors lol ALL my classes had one It seems!! i DO remember seeing them use the overhead calculator!
Now I'm waiting for part 2.
I hope you're patient!
I have a theory in regards to the overhead calculator not working properly. Since overhead projectors are constantly shining an insanely bright light while in use, Stokes could have cheaped out on the solar cells and used cells that don't absorb as much light. Not a problem on an overhead, a huge problem anywhere else where you don't have the same kind of light. Maybe take it outside on a sunny day and see what happens!
On a side note, I love the video! I definitely have nostalgia for the TI-108 and I just bought a new one off of Amazon. Paid a bit extra for same day delivery too 😅
The beginning nailed it
Thank you!
I cant believe I watched an hour long video of a calculator I used in grade school from the late 1980's.
Well I’m glad you did, thanks for watching! It’s the best calculator in the game!
Texas Instruments is the 35th most valuable brand in the entire world... their returns and domination of the market is damn near predatory imo.
Nice Pringle collection
😉 A Pringles can for every TI-108, and a TI-108 for every Pringles can - so it shall be and so it was!
Very entertaining 😂
Thank you!
Do you have any other Ti calculator videos?
I love the ti datamath 2500
I do have the 5th with bezel and 6th without bezel
You have to have watched Scott the Woz before, am I right? This is like watching that show for math topics instead of videogame topics. Nice job man
Thank you! And yes, I love Scott! I took inspiration from a lot of sources for this series ( ruclips.net/p/PLztBpqftvzxXC3ow93HXIKx_yHyk5GXCE ), and since this is a less mathematical episode, the Scott the Woz feel is strong!
Hi! Shaun E. Please could cover section 8.1 from the Gary Chartrand and Ping Zhang Graph Theory book? It shall be very helpful. All your lessons are very very intuitive. I literally feel that you are some sort of God of Graph Theory... Would like to see more concepts of matching, planarity...
Thanks Abhishek, I have already covered some content from Section 8.1, but I definitely intend to cover the rest of it. Not sure when, but hopefully sometime this year! Thanks for the request!

I'm gonna post a commentary video of me watching and discussing this doc for channel members only next month, but will post some clips too for everyone to watch, keep your eyes peeled for more Ti108!
i think i used this calculator but i mainly remember using the ti-15
I think I used the TI-15 also, though I had totally forgotten it until seeing it while making this video! Looking at it now, I think it has some of the charm of the TI-108, but I think there is something ugly about it too. I don't know, the keys look kind of weird, too many different color variations I think, and I can't say I love the semi-transparent shell. Down with the TI-15, up with the TI-108!
1:09:21 1+1=2 of course! but where was the video?
This calc takes me back to safety scissors and enough repressed memories of Special Ed from the 80s that could get some teachers in serious trouble.
I’ve been on a long search for the perfect basic calculator and have arrived here … as a master of the TI-108, please tell me … on any model of the TI-108, if it auto-powers off with something stored in the memory, will it retain that entry after powering back on!?
I have a Canon LS-701H, a solar-only calculator which is able to do that, but the keys are not very tactile… I pray the TI-108 can be the upgrade I am looking for.
The answer is yes.
"what there is a documentairy about the TI-108" thats so funny *clicks as joke*. But then you really sucked me in, very well made!
Thanks so much, that's precisely what I want to happen!
Just dug up my TI84 from childhood. Need to run to the store to get 4x AAA batteries ASAP so I can play snake and blockdude...

The TI-84 Plus blows
@@WrathofMath you shut your mouth, I loved programming in TI-BASIC in high school. And playing MirageOS games
Kinda like a hour long scott the woz episode about a fucking 6 operation calculator with the ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, generate the square root of, and find percentages of numbers. This is the second time I've watched this, and it's just amazing.
Thanks a lot - it was hard to get the video this short, really had to skimp out on a lot of the details, but I didn't think most people would be interested in a three-hour long video about a fucking 6 operation calculator with the ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, generate the square root of, and find percentages of numbers.
A possible reason for the large plus button is for touch calculating. In Japan people do touch calculating like we do touch typing. Part of that is a large plus button which is pressed by the right pinky finger. For more info see the following: ruclips.net/video/I_sdS4xQtV4/видео.html
Thanks for the info! I paint the large plus button as absurd mostly for laughs, it's likely for most real-world applications that the plus will be used most often as accountants and actuaries and the like add up a sequence of numbers.
@@WrathofMath For me the key size and device size are important issues. I recently purchased a TI-108 and while I like the way it looks when I started to use it I discovered that it was too small for my hands. I think is because it was intended for young students rather than adults.
Due to that, I ended up returning to my previous basic calculator, a Casio (model number contains "310"). One feature I liked on the Casio was the separate MC (Memory Clear) button, I found the MRC button on the TI-108 inconvienent at times since you have to clear the memory before starting a calculation rather than being able to do it during a calculation.
Also the TI-30 line goes all the way back to the Majestic age in 1976 and it's most recent itteration the ti 30x Plus Mathprint which is still available was introduced in 2018. And if you talk about the ti 84+ you have to talk about it's family the TI-82 its first proper ancestor which would spawn a bunch of variants in europe we never saw or were rebranded to ti 83 models.
The thought of making a TI-84 doc has entered my head, but it would take a couple months of my life to make. Maybe one day!
I'm absolutely speechless
That's what I like to hear - thanks for watching! I was speechless too when I was done, never worked so hard on anything!

Also, this needs to be sent to Matt Parker. Pronto.
My videos in this series ( ruclips.net/p/PLztBpqftvzxXC3ow93HXIKx_yHyk5GXCE ) can at times be a little chaotic, switching back and forth between different scenes, so I like having a stable border throughout all that!
