Some tips and tricks on how to get started with and get the most out of Simple Postflop.
The steps for a standard solve:
1. Input Board
2. Set Stacks & Pot Size
3. Pick Bet & Raise Sizes
4. "Apply Situation"
5. Input Ranges
6. Add Job
7. Run Calculate
Steps 2-5 can be replaced by saving the game tree (combo of stacks, pot, bet sizes, ranges). Next time you want to solve the same spot on a different board, just click select your saved game tree.

Thanks so much for this, I just purchased SP and this explained everything so well.
Carl, a question about "EV Aggregation", when you say you need 5.75 EV to call, do you mean check fold on the flop or don't call preflop? Thanks for the video, you helped me choose which one to buy!
You can do something similar with piosolver regarding turns and rivers on the fly. It is called create a subtree configuration, and will lock in whatever node you want (flop, turn) and let you resolve.
Also the equity of a specific combo before or after get called can be shown in pioviewer main grid. Just click OOP or IP equity (depends on who deals the betting)
I have a question about most efficient way to study using a solver. It seems the way you use them, is to just study hands you played which are very different/unrelated to each other and do not share a "common theme".
What do you think about not playing for a day, and just generating, for example, 25 different monotone boards UTG vs BB in a SRP, and analyzing the whole game tree for all the hands for several hours taking note of all the patterns so you can "master" all types of monotone boards in that situation? And possibly comparing it to other positions' RFI ranges vs a BB flat for the same boards and how those are played differently. Do you think that is not an efficient way to learn, or have you already done this for all common spots and now just look at individual hands? Anyway, may be a decent video topic of the best ways to use a solver to learn and improve your play as someone who is new to using them (or experienced)
I think you are very correct, although comparing 25 monotone flops might be a bit too zoomed in / specific.
An in depth look at a specific spot (comparing flops, or same flop, but comparing positions....) will be better study time and worth more. I have done a bunch of those in the past, and should actually do more of them, as I have definitely not covered every spot.
I use the "unrelated hands from previous session" review basically to warm up, get me thinking about poker without actually playing yet. I go over some hands quickly, some hands get a more in depth look and maybe I'll even take some notes about it & they can uncover an area to do in an depth study on.
But that's still lazy solver study time. Kind of fooling myself into thinking I have done some studying, but an in depth look will be more valuable (and more effort).
Great video. How do I upload the Upswing simple postflop board solutions to simple postflop? Thanks
You're asking how to use the SP files coming with one of my Upswing modules?
Open them with: "File -> Open" in the upper left corner

@@mynameiskarl Thanks, I was watching your 3 bet pot module, good stuff.
I wonder why i can't change the given preflop range and effictive stacks.
thank you so much!!! you are the best!!!!
Why is has betting patterns for player ip, not call or something, I don't get it what do you input there?
wow really thx for the video
i'm using Simplepostflop but i didn't know about 'add job' or Turn,River Runout and see Frequency at each Turn or River card
now i can sleep with add job and give pain to my computer :D
oh and may i ask you about your computer spec or advice about 'enough spec' ?
my CPU is intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8500 CPU and RAM is 48 GB( i bought it bc i coudn't calculate SB vs BB XD)
Yeah, just add a bunch of sims to the job queue and do something else. Or run 74 flops for 1 single spot overnight.
I got a i7-5820K CPU, 32GB RAM. Didn't know much about the CPU, specifically for extra RAM when I upgraded my PC. But you're already beating that, so you should be fine.
@@mynameiskarl thx man, really helped :D
is there not a way to show eq in aggregation reports? thanks
ALWAYS allow all-ins!
I love this content.Thank you very much.
It shows me only the bets of oops and only the flop, how does it solve it
I'm going to use the downloadable SP materials from your Upswing modules as a template to set up IP/OOP spots for SPR and 3bet pots, and adjust ranges and bet sizings accordingly. Just using the Upswing online cash ranges for now, as that's what I'm using in game. Is this an ok way to get started on SP?
Yeah, sounds good. And I'm happy those downloadable SP files get used :)
Hi , i'm an upswing member too. What files are you speaking about? I mean , in which module are they downloadable? I'm losing a lot of time setting SPF
hi there, thanks for the tutorial. had been wanted to buy a solver and this definitely helps.
Glad the video was helpful!
@@mynameiskarl ok sorry about that. edited. Thanks.
hey Karl very nice video once again. And now im waiting for PIOSOLVER video :D
What a great video! Would you consider sharing your input and output files?
Hey Julian! Glad you enjoyed the video, but I won't be sharing the files.
@@mynameiskarl Do you know where someone can get a copy of a simple postflop output file? I downloaded the free version (turn and river only) to see if I would like the program. Great video, enjoyed it very much, very informative...i was so lost before your video. :-)
I found them in the cloud area
Thank sir great video!! Can you do a video on monkersolver
Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately that's not going to happen.
I used Monkersolver to run my own preflop sims in the past (on a rented server).
But nowadays I'm not actively using it anymore, I don't have the server anymore, Monkersolver is a pain to work with and I never felt like an expert in it.
mynameiskarl thank you for your honesty with Monkersolver :) I was thinking about getting Monkersolver from a scale of 1-10 how difficult is the program?
Hello, thanks for your videos! Why you choose for urself simplepostflop? So many other solvers on market pio, gto+ ..
I bought SP early on when they were both new and it was just SP & Pio. At the time, SP seemed to have an edge in functionality.
Nowadays, I think both SP and Pio have their pros and cons. I mention some of those in this video.
I recently also bought Pio, and I use both depending on the situation.
If you want a comparison between both, from another player that started out with Pio and is using SP more now, check this video out:ruclips.net/video/QeBPvK02gpc/видео.html
Hello! Can you upload your sizings for different banks to the cloud? And give us a link? It would be amazing!
Of course, if you can send us the saved ready-made "trees" - then I will give birth to a child from you, despite the fact that I am a man!)))
Sorry, that's a bit too much to hand out.
It doesn't show me ip player, why?
Great content, man. Why do you still play NL500? I feel like you have the skill level and probably the bankroll to take shots at higher stakes.
Variety of reasons, maybe worthy of a video at some point :)
- Spoiled by the ease of zoom
- Don't know HU to table start. Don't want to table start 3h with good regs.
- I'm fine with lower swings, lower income. Not everything I make needs to come from playing poker for more and more money. Rather they a steady stream of income and have it invested than keep leveraging my net worth to play higher and higher stakes.
When I "take a shot" and win, I feel like a genius and wonder why I waited to so long to do this. Then I drop a couple of buy ins and think "fuck it, I'm too old for this shit"

Looks like Doug Polk's skills are still sharp as ever! Who else thinks he's one of the best in the game?
wow, sorry but subpar video. I hope simple postflop not relying too much on this to sell the item. I went thru 18 mintues and NOT ONCE did you mention WHY one play or bet size, etc) was better than another I imagine it was due to the EV, but you never mentioned it!!! (and that is the crux of optimal poker play)., and you should have explained the numbers, and how they compare to other numbers, and what they mean. looks like a nice item. sorry, just constructive advice.
I'm not teaching optimal poker play in this video, I'm teaching the very basics of how to use Simple Postflop (SP)
SP is a tool with which you can study for yourself which bet sizes are useful in different spots:
1) Does the solver utilize the bet size when you add it to the game tree?
2) Does this bet size add EV to your strategy? (sometimes the solver will use a bet size, but not having it in the game tree won't have a meaningful impact on your EV)
@@mynameiskarl of coruse, I understand you are not teaching optimal poker, and I might have "misspoke" when I said WHY one play was better than another, I intended to mean why according to the numbers on simple postflop. in other words, you waived your hands so to speak at any numbers shown. I could not even BRING UP the EV numbers. I did contact them, and they answered a few quesions. have a great day.
