Hi David is it common to get a hatch of IBD on the first week of March? Seen one yesterday I thought it was a LDO at first but after seeing it close up and a pic of a IBD I’m pretty sure Thts Wht it is
Hey Davie, doesn't the wax make it more difficult for the varnish to get to the thread underneath? I have noticed when I use wax on the whip finish and during the tying the varnish seems to sit on the top more and not go down into the thread. Hi Sean, I've never had any problems with the varnish not setting over the waxed thread to be honest though I don't put much wax on the thread and if I see any excess I'll wipe it off before I varnish it.. All the very best Davie
hiya davie, iv recently bn watching yir fly tying lessons, i fish the lower beats n sometime the upper beats of the Tay, nd often the isla n ericht .is there anyway u can differ the dark olives apart from size at this time. thanks ,Lee
Hey davie me and my friend just started tying but we are getting to the point where we are tying smaller flies so we need some nice dry fly hackle but all the whiting stuff looks really expensive i was wondering if you had any suggestions on what we should get?
Hi Ken, I would normally tye this pattern in 16s and 14s but I would tye a couple on a 12 as it would in faster water and for fishing late at night in the summer months... All the very best Davie
Howdy Davie, I have a question regarding wet fly wings. One of my favorites is the wickhams fancy. when setting the wings using mallard slips, the natural curve of the wings causes the tips to flare out to either side when tying with the shiny side of the slips to the inside. This causes my flies to spin in the current. Do you tie with the shiny side of the wing slips to the outside to eliminate this or is there a better method for creating these wings so the flies don't spin?
Hi Craig, Reduce the width of the wing and use the lower primary feathers as they are much softer. You can also run a brush through the wing to separate the fibres which will allow them to swim with the dressing...If you want a softer wing, Starling or Teal primary feathers can be used though Starling doesn't give you the perfect looking wing but it certainly works really well...I hope this is of some help to you...
