  • Yves Saint Laurent, the legendary French fashion designer, left an indelible mark on the fashion industry with his innovative designs and visionary approach. While he revolutionized fashion in numerous ways, his contributions to diversity and inclusion, particularly in relation to Black models, were relatively limited during his time. Names like Rebecca Ayoko, Sonia Cole, Katoucha Niane, Dalma Callado, Naomi Campbell, Alek Wek, Amalia Vairelli, Tyra Banks, Iman, all have worked for Yves.
    Yves Saint Laurent rose to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s, a period when the fashion industry was even less diverse than it is today. At that time, the prevailing beauty standards often excluded models of color, including Black models, from mainstream fashion. Yves Saint Laurent's runway shows and campaigns primarily featured white models, reflecting the industry norms of the era.
    It's worth noting that the lack of diversity in fashion was a systemic issue and not exclusive to Yves Saint Laurent's brand. Many fashion houses at the time had similar practices when it came to casting models for their collections.
    However, the landscape of fashion has evolved since then. In recent years, there has been a growing demand for diversity and inclusion within the industry, driven by changing societal attitudes, consumer preferences, and advocacy groups. This shift has prompted many fashion brands to embrace a more inclusive approach to casting models of various ethnicities, including Black models.
    Modern fashion houses, designers, and brands are increasingly aware of the importance of representing a diverse range of identities in their campaigns, runway shows, and advertisements. Prominent Black models, such as Naomi Campbell, Jourdan Dunn, Adut Akech, Joan Smalls, and Leomie Anderson, among others, have gained significant visibility and influence in the fashion world, breaking down barriers and redefining beauty standards.
    In conclusion, while Yves Saint Laurent's legacy is primarily associated with his innovative designs and contributions to fashion, it's important to acknowledge that the lack of diversity in his time was a reflection of broader industry norms. The conversation about diversity and representation, including Black models, has gained momentum in recent years, shaping a more inclusive and vibrant fashion landscape that recognizes the beauty and value of all identities.

    Here we go I'm shooting from the dome so we have, Fidelia Jacqueline Matisse, Mounia Ossumare, Rebecca Ayoko, Amalia Virelli, Khadijah Adam's, Rosalind Johnson, Katoucha Niane, Roshumba Williams, Naomi Campbell,Pat Cleveland,Beverly Peele, Romeny Williams, Sonia Cole, Anne Fiona Scolley, Alek Wek too many names so many faces. Yves St. Laurent was a champion for black models as evidenced by Iman going to see him and shocked at the amount of black girls who came to the castings, not to mention the in house fit models were black at St. Laurent. And yes! Yes!! You brought it, and I'm buying it all!!! You just earned your wings to run wild in the fashion archives, yes again.🎉❤ P.S. Amalia Virelli is still modeling. She must be at least in her late 60's by now, but time did little to age her figure. She is still:snatched" and walks way better than the young ones.🎉🎉🎉

    You forgot to add. The reason that YSL advertised in Ebony was because Eunice Johnson bought a outrageous amount of couture (Ebony Fashion Fair) YSL reckonized this, he applaued this and returned the favor.

    He also loved Asian models. Remember he grew up in Algeria so he grew up surrounded by beautiful women of color. It is part of his being. All white models was strange to him.

      Algerians are mostly light skinned. And why feel the need to diss light skinned women? YSL didn’t think white models were strange. What an absurd comment to make. He loved women period.

    • @ovh992
      @ovh992 3 месяца назад

      @@juliad368 what an idiotic comment you just made! Who is dissing white women? They are the standard in western fashion. How many models of color did the man Christian Dior actually use? ZERO! How about Coco Chanel? ZERO again! She used white models exclusively. It is a shame you can not see how groundbreaking it was for Mr. Saint Laurent to use African models. Please get your racism under control.
