A Lesson in Control and how to Press: Arsenal 2-0 Brighton Tactical Analysis, Arteta vs De Zerbi

  • Do you ever get that creeping feeling that someone is breathing down your back? That pretty much summered up Arsenal 2-0 Brighton on Sunday afternoon.
    What do I mean? In today’s video I will provide an in-depth tactical analysis of Arteta vs De Zerbi, covering:
    1. Arsenal’s out of possession set up, including Declan Rice and Kai Havertz’s roles in Arsenal’s man to man press, suffocating and turning over the ball against Brighton Hove and Albion’s 4-2-4 build up in possession.
    However, Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, and Gabriel Martinelli all played a role in Mikel Arteta's press; and I believe the Gunners are now the best off the ball football team in the world.
    On the ball, Odegaard dropped next to Rice to allow Arsenal to build in their own 4-2-4, releasing complete dependency from Zinchenko, and creating a defensive build-up axis of Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Ben White, and David Raya.
    This mirrored Brighton's on-ball shape comprised of Pascal Gross, Lewis Dunk, van Hecke, James Milner, Joel Veltman, Billy Gilmour, Lallana, and more.
    Brighton were pinned in by Arteta’s gunners, but when they were forced to go long, Evan Ferguson was left isolated, along with Mitoma and Adingra.
    This channel also covers the entire Premier League, including Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, Manchester United, Eric Ten Hag, Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool, Chelsea, Pochettino, the Champions League, and much more!

    There's a lot of things that Arteta does in terms of tactics that only a coach with so much experience will be able to do.
    The fact that Arteta in my opinion is eating on the same table with the elite coaches in only his first job is a thing to behold.

      @@fonyuytata But let's be real. Arteta is also lucky to have the financial and moral support from the Arsenal board to build the squad that he wanted, especially when things wasn't so great during his first few years. Not many clubs that have given the manager the amount of money they gave him during those early years, would have the patience to stick with the manager.

    • @markpotter544
      @markpotter544 5 месяцев назад +1

      Arteta has done a good job, but everything is relative. Mourinho won title with Porto in his first full season with, then cl in his second full season. Guardiola won cl and league in his first season at Barcelona, his first 1st team coaching job. Those are extreme cases of course, but there are other coaches that may have done a better job, maybe not. Arteta is learning on the job and that's not necessarily good for the club. At the end of the day, if arteta wins pl or cl, then it ll be justified, if not, then him being a good coach will be irrelevant. Point is that's the barometer of a coach at a club like arsenal should be - titles. Hopefully he ll get there

    • @davidscot7767

      @@markpotter544 you're right but Guardiola didn't pick up a bad Barca team and then change them into title contenders. Barca had a squad that even with me as their coach, well win the league🤣🤣🤣.
      Arteta picked up a scrap Arsenal team, and started rebuilding. That's the hardest job for any manager let alone one without experience.
      People talk about the club backing him, well if money for everything it takes to rebuild a team, then Chelsea should've won everything last season and this season as well cuz they've spent more than what Abramovic spent in 3 seasons combined.
      Many people don't know how difficult it is to rebuild a big team with so much expectations from the board and fan base.
      Look at Man United for example. Tenhag has spent if not almost the same amount as Arteta but look at the inconsistencies.

    Superb analysis as usual!
    The duality of the Kai role where he's next to Rice when we're pressing up high and almost next to Jesus, probably even higher than him if you look at the average touch map, when we're building up seems to be a very unique and specific role. I think the success of this role absolutely holds the keys to our ceiling. Arteta clearly evaluated Kai's attributes and created a very specific role for him. Difficult to imagine many players who can fill exactly that role since it is quite demanding both tactically and physically. Superb.

      Been doing the defensive side all season, now growing in confidence going forward: carrying with aggression, active option, etc. but he really is a package when you sign him you’re right. And got a v good relationship with Jesus currently. Never doubt Mikel❤️

    I actually think that the Brighton game was our best performance all season, the team was switching between zone pressing and man to man pressing brilliantly, these lads are coached so well by Arteta that it all just comes naturally without thinking about it.

    This is superb as always, Harvey. Absolutely love your analysis.
    I get the feeling Kai is about 80% there with his game/self-belief. The way he is linking up etc is miles better than it was at the start of the season, but the one thing lacking is that zip and confidence when playing those progressive/killer passes as you touched on in your video. Adding this will hopefully help in fully unleashing that left hand side of our attack. From seeing Kai at Leverkusen, at his best, he absolutely has the quality to do this - this was one of his best qualities - so I’m hopeful that it’s only a matter of time before we see it on a frequent basis in an arsenal shirt as his confidence continues to grow - much like we have seen vast improvements in other areas of his game over the past few weeks.
    Thanks again for all your amazing work.

    Thanks for the video and analysis. I did like the comments on left 8 or left interior. Out possession was good, in possession though havertz offers very little, and that's why the left interior position is important. Plus if opposition will start to mark out odegaard creativity will suffer, again creating a need for left interior. Btw, the press was good but brighton was very brave and played out on a number of occasions. They defended well too, when they lost the ball. Arsenal actually scored from a corner and then counterattack. Still a good result

BUT, maybe(if i may pick your mind) in my foolishness, i envision a fluid front 3(or even 5 when you throw in our left(Harvetz) n right(Oodergard) no.8's). With our wingers able to switch flanks n even play centrally(with our striker(Jesus) able to comfortably operate on either flanks too. So that we are able to outwit/out maneuver OR manipulate n exploit all defences.

    • @harveygration
      @harveygration  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks, really appreciate the comment. As for Brighton’s press, part of the reason for their passiveness was Arsenal mixing playing out from the back with going long to Saka and Martinelli who cleverly darted infield behind Havertz and Jesus who had attracted the CBs slightly further forward, in between the lines. This gave space for our wingers off the back. But this is only partly so. We sustained pressure so well in their half that for a team to suddenly switch to man-man- it’s very risky: distances between players are bigger, team cohesion down. As De Zerbi said, they suffered. It was more down to us than them.

    Another brilliant role of havertz is allowing odegaard to play deep in the build up phase of our attack as he does not need to play as the shadow strker.this allows us to easily break up team that presses up high buiild effectively on teams that set up on on lowblocks and also create over load .you also notice that havertz is dropping more on the left hand space with martinelli and zini and jesus saka and odegaard plus Rice overloading the right

    • @wildchild3862
      @wildchild3862 5 месяцев назад +1

      Ødegaard dropping deep during buildup basically fixed arsenal. We have seen that rice and jorginho has struggled to progress the ball over the midline, consequently ødegaard has struggled to get on the ball and havertz has struggled to get into the box.
      With ødegaard in the deeper role, he easily is able to beat the press and activate the forward line. This allows kai to push up higher into the danger zone. It also makes ødegaard much harder to man mark and allows him to move more freely. I much prefer ødegaard in this space where he is on the ball. It completely changes arsenal as a team and the ability of the team to build from the back.
      Ødegaard is probably the best in the world in this role, his ability to manipulate space and shift the play with intelligent pass combinations combined with his extreme ball control in small spaces .. assisted by zinchenko who is also very very good at the same is an absolute nightmare for the high press opponents.
      The game vs liverpool next week will be the ultimate test of this system, there is no more aggressive high press then liverpool. If we can withstand that press, its going to be a big clue as to how the rest of the season will go.

    In all the number 9 discussion, there is a thing often overlooked and you said it: Decision making. We don't rely on a single player to finish plays and score goals, and when we don't score, I don't think is GJ's fault. It's the poor decision making.
    In the Brighton game, Martinelli's last touches were very poor. He is a excellent player, fast and technical, but he has to definitely improve his decision making. Sometimes he dribbles too much, sometimes he shoots instead passing, so on and so forth.
    Press was superb though, Brighton couldn't even move. Great video!

      Thank you! And yeah think decision making/making the turnover count has been a big part of our season, blocking us from having some really meaningful scores. Having said all that, still not big on signing a forward as a priority in January. Other areas more important. What do you think?

    • @Mochido89
      @Mochido89 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@harveygration Absolutely agree, goal scoring per se is not a problem,we have loats of goal scorers (and lots of goals). And I don't really see us playing with a poacher-like number 9. For that we would have to make significant changes to our play style.
      I would like to sign a midfielder and a left back, we still lack depth there. And, in a team which depends on building plays from the back, that's where we make title winning teams.

    With Timber in that team, it will be dangerous for most teams to play Arsenal.

    Saying Arsenal are best team out of possession is not true. This is just fans going to overrating their own team.
    Brighton produced one or two chances and they were clear cut chances and they did it easily.

      Really! One chance cos the header chance was off side on the crosser. Am not sure you know Brighton well enough. You call creating one chance in 90 minutes easy?

      Arsenal actually are the best team out of possession. Gabriel is amazing off the ball.. Pep admitted himself. Martinelli and Saka work their socks off. Odegaard is everywhere.. Havertz work off the ball is his trait and don't even get me started with Rice. It's actually amazing considering these are attacking players, but really really good with wining balls even against the tough sides who love getting physical.

      @@ejiroighorodje1891 Until you guys tell me which teams are better my statement remains. Arsenal are not even on full gear when it comes to attack.. It's the off the ball stuff that got us at the top. Soon you will get it.

      @@elasoulphlo8558 at least two coaches have said the same thing, but random Joe behind his phone thinks he knows better…let them mention a better team out of possession.. we will wait.
