- Here's a look inside Ford's Duratec 20 2.0L 4 cylinder naturally aspirated engine and how it works!
This engine came out of a 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid. It was used as an economy engine across Ford's lineup , namely in the Ford Transit, Escape and the Ford Focus.
In hybrid application the water pump and thermostat has been replaced by an external electric water pump, the starter motor has been replaced by a vacuum pump, the variable valve timing for the exhaust has been blocked off, there is no direct injection, no alternator and no accessory drive belt because the AC compressor is driven by the hybrid battery electronically.
Ford's Duratec was derived from Mazda's MZR series of engines, as they share similarity in design. You can see a teardown video on the Mazda version in this video:
• Why Mazda Engines FAIL
The Ford Ecoboost was based on the Duratec, a teardown video can be found here:

Stay tuned for the hybrid transmission and hybrid power inverter in this series of Ford Hybrid videos soon!

"I don't usually work on my cars, 'cause theyre Toyota's" SHOTS FIRED🤣😂 Great video as usual. I prefer you to make the videos in the garage instead of out in the cold. Lighting looks great to me.
Haha indeed shots have been fired. Waiting on the Ford fans to retaliate.
Thanks ill be in the garage for the winter, expect more videos on there, I've already shot 3 😄
Who is Toyota?
@@speedkar99no need to retaliate… I hid behind my Duratec motor. It’s bulletproof. 😉
Even with the heater running, the garage is fine.
Thanks. It's noisy though. Prefer it off. Better than dealing with the airplane sounds!
Wtf are those bots in the comments damn.
At least, they are not wrong your videos are amazing !
Thanks. Yes I notice 3-4 of them comment right away 😒
Ok, educate me please. Which ones are The bots and how can you tell?
@@XtheUnknown99 the video was 3 min old when i commented, theres was at least 15 comments of half naked girl profile pic with non sense like "your videos are amazing, it give me great tips!". Brother, the vid is 28min long talking about the inside of a car engine. This is certainly not real people.
Fun fact: the hybrid ford fusion is the best fusion due to being way smoother and having a supposedly more reliable transmission (even if it is a cvt). My relative has one and I love how it drives!
The transmissions are the weak spot on these.
But yes it's more reliable than the other Fusion's, especially the turbos
Ford’s E-CVT is conceptually identical to Toyota’s ultra-reliable, ultra long-lived E-CVT introduced in the original Prius. It has no belts, clutches, or solenoids, so it’s still a much better bet than any belt-driven CVT made to date. Hell, it’s better than most other transmissions regardless of type. They have essentially zero wear items.
I learn so much thanks to you. And, yes, take everything apart; I am interested to see those parts too.
Thanks. I'll prob do a short video on the water pump.
Garage lites are fine. Stay warm. Take that other stuff apart. Thanks for the high quality vids and explanations. Heater noise was no problem. All was good.
I'm glad you appreciate the efforts. Trying to stay warm!
Cool! Would love to see the internals of the AC compressor and water pump.
Sure will make a short video on the water pump.
Woah, want to change latitude. Being on the south shore of LE we were gifted with 4 1/2' of snow. Understand garage video. Usually only those close in relationship's recycle the exhaust back into the intake (watch that oily residue). 🤣 Damn near fell of the chair with that comment of yours. Maybe you should do some stand up with that quick wit. Your right about bearings being being in good shape. Seems frequent oil changes. Great tear down. Lighting was spot on.
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed this one. I've shot a few more in the garage which you'll see in the coming weeks.
Stand up ain't for me. It takes 3 takes before I get my words right. Editing makes me sound better than I am 😆
Great video. And please do make the other videos you offered on the rest of the components.
Sure will do!
Finally you are in your "shop," I felt for you when you were making your vids in snowy conditions.
As always, a great, educational content.
Question to you: how often, in general, these PCV valves and the whole assembly should be cleaned?
Thanks. It feels nice to be in the comfort but I do miss the freedom and lighting of the outdoors.
At least the tools are closer to access but so is the wife 🤭
PCV valves dont need to be cleaned often, however once they start clogging they begin clogging even faster (if that makes sense).. having said that don't go more than 30k miles without at least checking on it.. on an older car check more often, replace if it's older than 120K miles regardless of how decent it may look
Shooting in the garage works just fine. BTW, Project Farm just did a video about diesel-fuel heaters. They seem to work great, and they're very quiet. If you got one, you could do an install video for it.
Thanks. I looked into them. A bit more expensive than the propane one I have and I'd have to drill a hole for exhaust.
I'm also paranoid having literally torn down a diesel engine in my garage just now, the smell is excruciating
Yes, please, do a teardown on the electric water pump, the vacuum pump, air-conditioning pumps, all that stuff.
Sure! I will make short video on the water pump. Thanks
I think it's funny how much flack the ford timing gear diamond washers catch, but I have yet to see a failure caused by one that couldn't be attributed to installer error. Not to mention it's super easy to install vs a keyed setup, just get all the stuff on there loose, then line up the marks, then tighten, compared to fighting to get one sprocket shifted when you are a tooth off...
There's more room for error, is the issue with them. A keyed setup has no room for error, it goes on one way. They could've keyed their setup extremely cheap but they chose not to
@calebyarbrough4621 I dunno, I was skeptical the first time I did the ford setup (this is after having done countless honda and subaru timing belts when those were common, and having spent entirely too long banging my head on the wall because one sprocket was off a tooth), but I found it to be way easier . I did buy the cam and crank locking tool kit (was like 30$). Just pin the crank, lock plate the cams, put on the sprockets (loose) and chain, guides, tensioner, ect, torque the crank bolt, pull the tensioner pin, torque the cam bolts, and done. No line of sight guessing, or having a sprocket a tooth off or anything like keyed setups. But, different strokes for different folks, just my 2c, ill admit I hate the fact that the diamond washers are one time use, thankfully only like 7$ a pop, so not great, but could be worse.
@calebyarbrough4621 I'll be the first to admit though, on ford's other engines that run the water pump off the chain, or worse yet a wet belt, are absolutely s*** designs.
@@rotorhead5000 that's just the thing though, outside of German stuff Ford's the company that most often needs special timing tools. I can do my Honda or my Nissan without having to a buy a special set, and that's the idea
Good point
'believe me, I don't usually work on my cars, 'cause they are Toyota's' :)
Actually I 'm impressed that this Ford engine with almost 300000 km's is still in good condition. Maybe because Mazda helped Ford...
Haha maybe
I tried to knock on on Ford there hah
OMG YOURE INDOORS!!!!!!
Yes finally
Another excellent video.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
I have 2013 FFH with 200k miles and still running strong 40mpg+, I would love too see the teardown
Awesome!
No transmission noises? Unfortunately that's common on these
Please, do a separate video on this electric water pump.
I'm dying to know what kind of electric motor they put inside. If it's just brushed, series-wound, I'd be surprised as there's no way to change brushes. Maybe it's brushless, they're cheap nowadays, who knows.
I'd assume brushless. Will probably do a short video on it. Thanks
likely the same compressors they put on the inverter mini splits
Just as good in your garage..
Thanks. Is it bright enough? That was my biggest worry.
Interesting. I have a 2018 MKZ Hybrid Reserve with only 30,000 miles/48,000 km so far
Nice. Any issues?
@@speedkar99 None so far. Glad I stayed away from the 2nd-gen 2.0 EcoBust available around this model year. But what I can't understand is the multiple engine failures our 2018 2.0L MKC has had. The first engine failed at 37,000 miles (206 block part number) so the dealer put in a brand new "redesigned" 6006 block with the supposedly better cooling jacket design without the middle slits in between each cylinder (assembled March 2023) but it ALSO FAILED before 5,000 miles. BOTH failed from coolant intrusion. The third engine in it as of now is the same 6006 block as the one that failed before 5,000 miles, this time assembled in April 2024. I've seen other 2.0 EcoBoosts have a 6007 block part number instead such as a 2020 Nautilus and new Ford Escapes, where the 6007 blocks don't seem to have the head gasket issue from what I can find like the 206 blocks (and 6006?). What's going on here? Has Ford not solved the coolant intrusion problem? I was told anything produced after 2020 is good but our block produced in 2023 failed before its first oil change from the same problem that the "redesign" was supposed to permanently address.
I want a teardown of that electric water pump.
Sure. I'll make a short video soon.
Sir you should make a video on what is vacuum I find it hard to understand it
The vacuum pump?
Okay maybe I'll make short video...
It is too cold to film outside?
Nice video 🙂
I'm getting too old for the cold. In past years I could bear it, but I wanna get more done than the weather and lighting allows.
So The Lady doesn't mind you using her dresses, shirts, and toothbrush, but draws the line at using the garage for working on cars? 🤔
She's got a hammock in there and she doesn't like when I hang it up for my own use.
Bro, I know they’re prolly your faves… but those gloves are cashed! Time to make that call to Uline. 😂😂😂 Seriously, as much advertising as you give them, they should give you a pair for every day…
I'd love to get free gloves!
I have got a 2008 Ford Galaxy with a 2.0 duratec, is it the same engine? I have noticed a lot of "it's very simple" and "it's very solid" in this video which is great. Should I keep my car and look after it?
Yes. Watch for rust.
Whats the rationale of not having keyed crankshaft ? to save $1 in production ?
Yes
Electric water pump, no keyed timing gear, at least the plastic rails don't blow up
At least yeah .. 😑
One thing about these engines I hate is that the air filter and throttle system sits ontop of the engine so you have to take it off in order to access the spark plugs or coils. Pain in the ass.
Yeah they had to make room for the inverter
Notification Squad!🔥🔥🔥
Awesome thanks

Bingo 👍🏻😎
Ford got much more from Mazda than Mazda ever did from Ford!
There was some platform sharing on the Volvo v40/Mazda 3 and Ford focus.

Video great as usual
The engine a total garbage design if you compare to Toyota ones. I can’t believe car manufacturers how idiotic they are to create so complicated and stupid designs of everything.
The hybrid componentry definitely added complexity but I think it's still a simple design compared to alot of other modern 4 bangers
