  • Youth crime in Victoria has surged, with the latest crime statistics showing burglaries committed by 10 to 14-year-olds almost doubling in the past year.
Statistics released on Thursday show a small increase in the state's overall crime rate, although Victoria Police say the figures were lower than in the pre-COVID era.
The stand-out figure is an 86.7 per cent increase in the number of burglaries committed by youths, which has driven a 30 per cent jump in the overall number of aggravated burglaries (those committed when the home's occupant is present).
The rise comes as Victoria's youth justice system undergoes major changes, with its facility at Malmsbury set to close by the end of the year.
