Dude, some of these comments make me lose hope. People complaining about fishing just shows that they just want to AFK the game... you do realize that this gives us people who want to actually play our games something to do while we fish. Go play cookie clicker if you want to go AFK in a game. People complaining about having to take care of animals and acting like if they leave for a loot run, they'll die, are ridiculous. It would take several days for your animals to die for dehydration and starvation, if you are going to be gone for days at a time, don't own farm animals or get new ones if they die. If you are mad about the new farming, you do realize that this is how farming is in real life. "Oh I dont want my game to be a realistic survival simulator", you came to the wrong game. COD zombies, minecraft, dayZ etc are over yonder, try them. I understand giving valid criticisms, but some of you are just admitting that you don't like the concept of PZ and that frustrates me to no end. We, the PZ community, waited for months at the edge of our seats for B42, only for people to complain about some very good features that make the game better.
It conflicts with the other game systems they have in place. For example, fishing. People fish in this game not for the minigame but to get a reliable source of food. There are far better fishing systems in other games, even entire fishing simulators. If you want a minigame, that's fine but there should be ways to get food from nature without *human player* grinding. Let us spend various other *ingame* resources on food acquisition instead of having to grind your minigame, which is not even that great or engaging from what I see. Maybe an option to skip time in exchange for lower fishing yield or using nets or even getting NPCs to fish for us. Games should never be about arbitrary "realism" first, they should be FUN first, realistic second, or tenth.
"If you're going on looting runs for several days ron't own farm animals or get new ones" Getting new farm animals sounds like an absolute nightmare. And, it's all cool to tell people not to own farm animals but here's the thing, they nerfed every other way to get food. -Fishing requires a lot more resources since spearfishing is gone (and many people hate these kinda minigames btw) -Farming can only work during certain seasons, it was mediocre before, it's worse now. -Hunting apparently requires ammo, which as far as I'm aware are jot renewable, and players like shooting zombies too, any ammo you use on hunting is ammo you won't use to fight. -Trapping is still a thing but with carpentry being harder to level up, and farming being seasonal, it'll be less accessible. Plus, you're saying "The PZ community" as if the PZ community only had players that want to play the survival aspect of the game. But that's far from the truth, there's a lot of players that love the fighting and looting in PZ, it's an integral part of the game, and the new systems make it much harder to actually spend time doing these things, if that's what people enjoyed then they're out of luck, build 42 forces the players to engage in things they might not enjoy. In a perfect universe the new features would have been implemented in a way that didn't bother other playstyles, and while I see why it is the way that it is, I can understand the complaints. And personally I do have one complaint when it comes to fishing, despite really enjoying the update. Removing spear fishing is an extremely odd choice. They could have nerfed it majorly, because it was way too powerfull, but removing it feels weird. In survival situations, rivers spearfishing is one of the most useful skills to have. It's not only realistic, it's in general much more likely than using actual fishing poles. Removing one of the primary survival techniques for food gathering, in an update entirely centered around the survival aspect just feels odd. The only valid-ish reason I could see is that it doesn't work with the fishing minigame but... I mean... Just make another minigame for it, something based on timing maybe.
I am confused. How is looting food is being ignored. Fishing was a way to ignore the zombies (aka the game) and get food in an unrealistic way. I get some are going to miss this easy out, but I never felt PZ was supposed to have easy outs so not surprised the devs changed it.
You don't HAVE to update, if you just want to play the game and not worry about bugs you're better off staying on the current version. But you can backup the save. It's also advised that you do for unstable branches, they used to be called IWBUMS (I will back up my saves). You can copy your save file from C:/Users/'username'/Zomboid/Saves, copy/cut it somewhere OUTSIDE the game folder where you won't lose it and then update the game. If you want to switch back to your old save, you downgrade back to current version and then put your save file back in C:/Users/'username'/Zomboid/Saves. But it's your choice, the current version is meant for testing and you will encounter bugs which you're supposed to report. It won't update itself, you have to go to the game's properties in your Steam library, select Betas and then choose the 'Unstable' in the beta participation.
So if crowbars are no longer considered weapons, even if pre-42, they were considered "One of the best melee weapons" multiple times on the Wiki, what is considered "A weapon?" A hammer isn't a weapon. You use it to drive things. A Stick isn't a weapon. It's just a branch off a tree. A fire axe or hatchet isn't considered a weapon. You use it to bash through wood to save lives or cut down trees. They should consider if they're going this route adding tags to things that are considered "Weapons" that give maint exp. Because I've been playing for 3 in game weeks before I found out the crowbar on my back is no longer considered "A weapon" even though I have already bashed many zombie skulls in with it.
I'm not sure how they are calling things weapons overall. But from what I gather a "branch" isn't considered a weapon for maintenance purposes without it being crafted into something else. I understand the logic here. If it isn't a "weapon", it doesn't have to be "maintained". That said, I think the crowbar was targeted because of the maintenance meta circulating in build 41. As a side note, I think you get xp from fighting with "non weapons". I know currently a stone is considered a short blunt and gets short blunt xp. But there is no reason to "maintain" the stone, if that makes sense
@Drunkonlife I thought the whole point of maintenance exp is that you 1. Watch how things slowly break over time with use so 2. You know how to reinforce things later on without your intervention. So, while certain weapons can't be 'maintained,' they can still be useful to learn how they break and how they can be reinforced, or used more "properly" to prevent them from breaking as fast While I "get" that crowbars specifically don't need to be maintained like wood weapons, I find it extremely odd that now with these changes, I have to specifically kill a ton of zombies - with a stick with nails in it - to be able to craft a stone hammer
yes, that is now a thing and something I forgot about. Once you hit level 3, tv shows no longer give skill xp. You can change this in the sandbox if you want.
Maybe deconstructing an item should only yield xp if you have a carpentry level lower than the level necessary to build it. I dunno what the current levels are, but say a bed requires level 2 carpentry, you can only gain carpentry xp from deconstructing beds at carpentry levels 0 and 1. Once you hit level 2 or higher, you need to set your sights on bigger and better things. Likewise, I feel like building a wall over and over would stop giving you new knowledge after a while. Maybe building an item only grants you xp if your carpentry level is below twice the level constructing said item takes (like for a bed, you gain xp through levels 0 to 3 but stop getting xp from building beds after that)
They are kind of doing that with the tv shows/vcr tapes. You can only accumulate up to level 3 in any skill by watching a show and then it stops. You can adjust these setting back to build 41 status in the custom sandbox though. I think that the devs kind of knew this was going to be a sticking point for a percentage of the gaming base and wanted to give them the option (kind of like multihit that changed in the base game from 40 to 41).
it seems to me that 50% of the new features still don't work, especially the forge-related things. Stone axe is not broken by cutting down 1,000 trees. I think they still have a lot of work to do, but maybe I'm wrong!
50% may be an exaggeration. That said, there are a lot of bugs, most which aren't game ending and will be resolved over time. I think it's important to point out that this is the unstable branch and is designed to give us a way to play with new features while they are being developed.
hey, im asking here cause idk where else to ask, but has anyone else encountered horribly low (consistently 5-10) fps and frequent game crashing when opening your inventory after updating to the new unstable build? i want to know if this is a me issue or an issue with the unstable branch overall. thanks for any info

Go to your game list, right click, properties, betas, "unstable-unstable backup first" option. That's 42. I'm pretty much into this game with over 1k hours, telling you now, it's gotten much harder. Died twice and just had a crash when aiming my gun. Bonus? I noticed my spawn house in muldraugh had an extra part attached outside.... basement! Had a bunch of work out gear with a dumbbell in it. Next door neighbours zoms found me and just appeared, they got me but not infected, I got out, dispatched them then yea, the gun crash happened then.
the fishing is a little more realistic. you cant just fish anywhere in real life and expect to catch a big fat bass. also, the "minigame" is a simulation of how much tension is on your line. In real life you would combat that by adjusting your drag
"Animals throughout the world will die if you don't "rescue" them" I can't find anything online to confirm this. What is the source of this information? Because that kind of puts a lot of annoying pressure on you since it turns out our new "renewable" source of meat and resources isn't so renewable after all...
I feel like keeping the XP to normal when you are beginner levels is fair considering you don't know how to build most stuff and once you get at lvl 4 or something more advanced the XP you get is halved or maybe more
@@sirpotato8733They did it to stop people destroying things altogether. It's turns the skill into a gamified grinding system and completely destroyed whole towns in multiplayer.
Interesting. Removing spear fishing seems unnecessary. However I get it. I might of made it more consuming of time and thirst/hunger. Just better methods. Any real complaints about changes. I would proceed to tell people to try it in real life. Then come back. Machines. You can do a lot with a common wrech. Yet you better have a socket set for serious work. A "Crescent Wrench" you can get away with a ton of work at the top of a vehicle just not any tight spaces. Some jobs take a while. If you wanted to make it hell. Make it where some car work has a progression bar that thakes a good deal of time that you be forced to start and stop. You should be able to take anything apart. However putting it back together is the problem.
I imagine the real problem with adding spear fishing to the fishing options is that there is likely not a viable "mini-game" component to it and if were added as an option, most would simply skip regular fishing altogether and opt for spear fishing, kind of like what most did in build 41
Meh 😕 ... Soulflincher's mod list has the original intended blacksmith system. He also made every plant farmable and added more of them + longer growth time in sanbox is nicer and better then b42, less tedious. In general I have stable (no errors) mods to compensate for 80% of the features without making the game tedious and forced. I also don't like the direction they're forcing you to play like Rick Grimes 10years later in Alexandria with primitive crafting. In my world when power fails I push through with my smithing, electrical and metalworking skills to build solar panels and batteries which is really hard but makes mid-end game fun, also no Z respawns for additional goals. In all honesty I'm not going to update the game just for chickens and cows.
@@Drunkonlife the performance is worse than before, basements are a glorified death trap, there was already a mod that made dark places completely dark, and new places are... ok new places cant be argued with HOWEVER every mod in the planet is bugged to hell and that means even after B42 Stable has gotten out there will still be some mods that are not fixed, all the major ones (minus a couple ones that include moodles and traits) are actually mostly done rn tho so most of my mods are back so maybe there is hope.
It just adds tedium. I’d imagine most people, myself included, will just revert it in sandbox. Most developers realize trying to put a tedious crafting system into a game that’s based on looting isn’t a good idea. About half of the things in update 42 are just to stretch the game out by taking more time to obtain skills and items .

Like we need to be honest there is no real content here, just repackaging the same shit we've been doing since 2013. Even longer for some.
I kind of agree. The crafting system is click / time heavy and not well implemented. And even if you do it well, aren’t you just smashing zombies with slightly more efficiency? It’s like they took a straight path and added a bunch of crooks to it just to chew for time
@@paxton_wulgus That's why I say repackaged slop. It's such an odd way of developing a game. Like yeah let's get a new coat of paint on before we've even put a roof on the fucking thing. I was hoping for wolves or rabid dogs that would break up the monotonous combat, but no, just shearing sheep to make warm clothes for weather that still isn't a threat I guess?
Rubbish. No electrical from watches? No mechanical from light bulbs? So they removed renewable skill sources, meaning eventually as server runs there will be no way to level skills as all the non-renewable things got used up. Yea, great idea. I'll just use a mod that restores the old GOOD behavior.
They added giving xp to watches at the last minute before IWBUMS dropped. I think it's important to note here that this build will get a ton of patches over the next few months to balance out gameplay and things will change (sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse) over time.
it's a step toward reality and I believe that Lemmy was talking about this 2 years ago in a thursdoid. Actually having professions that would benefit a community when MP drops.

CDDA is actually eassier now (since you can hide from infected reletavly eassier and make it to that oen farm house,) just gotta get lucky and have not that many zeds spawn Last stand. thats a WHOLE other story lol
This is terrible news. Lets make fishing more tedious. Lets make farming more tedious. Lets add animals that need daily attention, so I can not drive half way across Louisville to loot only to come back to dead animals. Lets make tailoring and mechanical more tedious as well. I play the game to loot houses, get more things by killing zombies and explore areas I have not been. None of this makes my game play more fun.

I'm going to respectfully disagree as someone who has played this game since build 39. The things they have added not only extend early game woes (which is the best part of the game IMO) but also adds more things to do. During testing I found myself after a month survived going on mini quests trying to find certain items so I could do something in particular skillwise. This wouldn't have happened in build41, which usually devolves into "how many zombies can I kill or can I wipe this town out" once mid game has been reached. For skilled players, mid game can happen within the first week.

I don't get the complaining about fishing, it's a lot better than waiting for a green bar to fill up over and over again while catching nothing. At least now you're doing something and can increase your chances by being smart about it.
well, if you don't, the good news is that you can customize your game in sandbox back to how it was played in build 41 and still get the benefits of improved performance, kick ass resolution, basements and lighting, not to mention a new map with lots of new cool places to go.

@@Gibblegobblegoob also cause it doesnt make sense to spear fish near the shore and get 90kg fishes
@souljaboytellem. I mean. "Make sense" is the first thing that's gone in "zombie apocslypse". Also 90 kg fish don't exist in Kentucky in the real world.
@@Darker1208 even if there is a zombie apocalipse the game tries to remain as realistic as possible (and i said 90kg as an high random number. What i meant is that you can spear fish only near the shores, and big fishes tend to stay in the middle of ponds, rivers and lakes. Thats why i think that its best that they removed it)
@souljaboytellem. You could also just nerf it, entirely removing it feels weird, massive update to survival but removing one of the prime survival techniques to get food...?
Will be immediately downloading a mod to gain experience for carpentry from dismantling things
No need, there's a setting.
@miamesa8652 oh yeah! Sandbox is a great thing
you could also learn how to play the game without using cop-out mods
@salvadorrigotti4776 usually id agree. But the way they have it now is more reality based. You would absolutely learn from dismantling
you can actually change it in sandbox now
how can I get xp in metal working then? I tried dismantling and nothing, then I start splitting a metal sheet and nothing. pls help thx xD
I believe dismantling wrecks will get you xp still. Just remember, this is on the unstable branch which means that there are still things not implemented. The developers are on Xmas break and I don't suspect we will get many updates over the next couple weeks though.

Cool.
So hard to learn stuff without the wiki lol.
The crowbar not leveling up maintenance was a surprise to me too. And I just deduced that maybe weapons that can't be repaired can't level up maintenance.

It literally just came out yeah
@@Drunkonlife i must be dreaming
Seems a lot better for the longtime players. I’ll try it right now
Dude, some of these comments make me lose hope.
"If you're going on looting runs for several days ron't own farm animals or get new ones"
Getting new farm animals sounds like an absolute nightmare.
And, it's all cool to tell people not to own farm animals but here's the thing, they nerfed every other way to get food.
-Fishing requires a lot more resources since spearfishing is gone (and many people hate these kinda minigames btw)
-Farming can only work during certain seasons, it was mediocre before, it's worse now.
Do i have to update? Im on day 106 i dont want to lose my first successful character lmao
Where did you find that forge? Cant seem to find one and clay collecting is super annoying.

I'm headed there here
So if crowbars are no longer considered weapons, even if pre-42, they were considered "One of the best melee weapons" multiple times on the Wiki, what is considered "A weapon?" A hammer isn't a weapon.
So, while certain weapons can't be 'maintained,' they can still be useful to learn how they break and how they can be reinforced, or used more "properly" to prevent them from breaking as fast
While I "get" that crowbars specifically don't need to be maintained like wood weapons, I find it extremely odd that now with these changes, I have to specifically kill a ton of zombies - with a stick with nails in it - to be able to craft a stone hammer
about time lol i bought this game before it was on steam 10+ years ago, tired of waiting
It seemed to me that the TV show now longer gave me experience after I hit level 4 carpentry. Has anyone else experienced this?
yes, that is now a thing and something I forgot about.
I think it's important to point out that this is the unstable branch and is designed to give us a way to play with new features while they are being developed.
hey, im asking here cause idk where else to ask, but has anyone else encountered horribly low (consistently 5-10) fps and frequent game crashing when opening your inventory after updating to the new unstable build? i want to know if this is a me issue or an issue with the unstable branch overall. thanks for any info
my fps is better than in 41 build, but i have stutters when roaming in world.
@КириллМороз-у8л i actually found the issue, having your time set, say, 12 months after the apocalypse even with low pop spawns a billion zeds and thats what was killing my frames haha

when animals attack....
how did u get aces to build 42?
It was magic
Go to your game list, right click, properties, betas, "unstable-unstable backup first" option. That's 42. I'm pretty much into this game with over 1k hours, telling you now, it's gotten much harder. Died twice and just had a crash when aiming my gun. Bonus? I noticed my spawn house in muldraugh had an extra part attached outside.... basement! Had a bunch of work out gear with a dumbbell in it. Next door neighbours zoms found me and just appeared, they got me but not infected, I got out, dispatched them then yea, the gun crash happened then.
0:45 this was same in B41 but electrical 4...
Nah I don't think u could learn to operate gen by just leveling up electrical in 41
@soulghost9718 yes, you could bro. I first saw it in a youtubevideo. Why don't you try it with debug mode?
@@whoknows8223 it was probably a mod
Cuz in 41 u either need to make a character with electrician occupation or read gen magazine
the fishing is a little more realistic. you cant just fish anywhere in real life and expect to catch a big fat bass. also, the "minigame" is a simulation of how much tension is on your line. In real life you would combat that by adjusting your drag
"Animals throughout the world will die if you don't "rescue" them"
I can't find anything online to confirm this. What is the source of this information?
Because that kind of puts a lot of annoying pressure on you since it turns out our new "renewable" source of meat and resources isn't so renewable after all...
I feel like they should give EXP from disassembling things, but at least very little, to discourage it.
I feel like keeping the XP to normal when you are beginner levels is fair considering you don't know how to build most stuff and once you get at lvl 4 or something more advanced the XP you get is halved or maybe more
@sirpotato8733 That would be a good way to implement it, for sure.
@@sirpotato8733They did it to stop people destroying things altogether. It's turns the skill into a gamified grinding system and completely destroyed whole towns in multiplayer.

@Drunkonlife ohh okay
hereeee we goooo this is how I died!!!!!
In all honesty I'm not going to update the game just for chickens and cows.
uhhhh....what about the performance fixes? Basements? New Lighting? Updated places?
@@Drunkonlife the performance is worse than before, basements are a glorified death trap, there was already a mod that made dark places completely dark, and new places are... ok new places cant be argued with HOWEVER every mod in the planet is bugged to hell and that means even after B42 Stable has gotten out there will still be some mods that are not fixed, all the major ones (minus a couple ones that include moodles and traits) are actually mostly done rn tho so most of my mods are back so maybe there is hope.
is build 42 up?
yes
WHAT
Every little thing i learned to do for the begining skill ranks have been removed.
It just adds tedium. I’d imagine most people, myself included, will just revert it in sandbox.
Most developers realize trying to put a tedious crafting system into a game that’s based on looting isn’t a good idea. About half of the things in update 42 are just to stretch the game out by taking more time to obtain skills and items .
time to relearn the game :)
...which is why they made the sandbox options so robust. Those of us that have played for thousands of hours get frustrated when we can get to mid game within the first week because we know all the shortcuts.
@@Bhamloud47Its a game based on immersion and role-playing the apocalypse. Not killing zombies and looting stuff.
They never intended to have gamified grindable systems that you can power through or for the player to be able to kill 1000s of zombies in the first week.
@ lol they never intended it? It’s been that way for how long now lol? You do realize they’ve made some pretty drastic changes to an 11 year old game right?
What they’ve really down is nerf melee way too hard but made guns much much better. They’ll balance it some.
Clothing found in world or create should have some effects (like sandal, shoes, boots) not just turn into rags😢

As soon as the Whatz next community post dropped i shat myself and immediately emptied my entire modlist to embrace a fresh new start with vanilla zomboid, to make me truly feel like day one of playing again.
After like 600+ hr you have seen most of what vanilla build 41 has to offer and nothing really surprises or challenges me annymore. I played hardcore vanilla CDDA ironman for the most off my gametime and i have the survival strategy’s boiled down to a science. The game lacks real endgame progression which is what causes most of my runs to bog down in to after 1 month mark where you have cleared out an entire town, have a fully stocked base with food and water to last you for months ingame. You have everything and have nothing really to work towards besides killing zombies, building cool bases to show of or leveling the your useless skills. This update sees to improve upon this. Wich i enjoy greatly
I am so fucking exited to play this. But that ill have to be tomorrow I’m not pulling an all nighter and i have math test tomorrow, but after that ill be shitting in bucket in my rom playing non stop 48 hrs straight

I wish it wasn't as taboo to criticize indiestone, I get channels focused on PZ content wouldn't want to be vocal about negative aspects, but b41 was by far a more impressive jump in development than b42, and that was 5 years ago. Like we need to be honest there is no real content here, just repackaging the same shit we've been doing since 2013. Even longer for some.
I dunno... overhauling the crafting And adding animals seems like there's been some development.
@@Drunkonlife didn't they mention most of the crafting overhaul was cut like 2 weeks ago?
@@ogredew I'm not sure tbh. There seems to be a lot of crafting options for all the new skills. I just don't think they are fully fleshed out yet
The couple different animals are one thing, but what is really different from animal husbandry and fishing or foraging?

Actually having professions that would benefit a community when MP drops.
why would they try to pull the game in an unfun direction?
Unfun is pretty subjective though right? I am actually enjoying the slower pace and bigger challenge
they HEAVLY nerft the last stand accumulator mode
the new gun system kinda sucks worst than the old one
and on the gamemode you now get 1 shotgun shell for 90 money lol
they also replaced all crate loot to be wooden planks it seems like

CDDA is actually eassier now (since you can hide from infected reletavly eassier and make it to that oen farm house,) just gotta get lucky and have not that many zeds spawn
Last stand. thats a WHOLE other story lol

1. You aren't forced to engage with these mechanics, you can do just fine without it, if you aim to do what you said you play the game for.
2. This is Project Zomboid, not DayZ or Minecraft. This game is known and advertised as a realistic zombie survival simulator. Of course, they're going to make the game more realistic, even if it makes it "more tedious" for you, have you forgotten what the whole point of this game is??
3. No one is forcing you to update, you can stay on B41.
4. This is excellent news for 95% of the community, we have been eagerly waiting at the edge of our seats for this massive update- to say that this update is bad news because you personally don't like the survival game adding more survival mechanics is childish.
You should have realized earlier that b42 would be total nontent, writing was on the wall. We'll have to wait for b43 in a few years when they start part 1 of human npc development. lol
Slowing the progression of the game doesn’t extend gameplay in a positive way, it’s just bloat

One of the top mods almost right away is going to be to do away with fishing mini-game. Almost no one in any game likes fishing mini-games. They wasted their time making it.
Agree 💯💯
i absolute agree, and a carpentry skill like build 41, what is that nosense ? i mean its ok the changes, but makes the game more grindi, if i want to grind things, i go to play PoE o something like that.
TIS's Marketing folks and their trawling / distilling / parsing multiple Discord threads and online forums from players would disagree with you. I don't disagree with ya and feel same. But enough players have "opted-in" their interest the past few years that it's here at least for now.
Yes, first thing is removing fishing bring old fishing back mod and spearfish mod. Then turn off muscle strain.
I don't get the complaining about fishing, it's a lot better than waiting for a green bar to fill up over and over again while catching nothing. At least now you're doing something and can increase your chances by being smart about it.
i dont like how they slowed down the pace of the game or made leveling up certain skills only work with certain items
Funny because that was 2 things I've actually liked.... slowing midgame is always a good thing imo
Gotta be honest, not really feeling B42.
well, if you don't, the good news is that you can customize your game in sandbox back to how it was played in build 41 and still get the benefits of improved performance, kick ass resolution, basements and lighting, not to mention a new map with lots of new cool places to go.
