Torhout South no53 Level Crossing

Wednesday June 26 2024 at 16.38. The 16.16 Kortrijk to Brugge (17.03) train. This is a few hundred yards north of Torhout South no55 LC. There is no sign that there ever was a 54. There are 5 level crossings in Torhout, this pair, another pair not far away and one a long way north of the town. Unusually for this part of Belgium at least, a number of bridges keep road and rail apart in the town itself. In 1918 British troops advanced to Torhout to cut these railway lines as they were being used to supply the German Army. In WW2 Torhout was occupied by the Germans for 4 years until it was liberated exactly 80 years ago tomorrow.
