    • @ahow8017
      @ahow8017 2 года назад

      The ford V8 was a little easier to fit in without oil pan issues due to the distributor being in the front. The GM V8 had tougher fit with the rear mounted distributor and firewall. Granted they still fit as it has a large engine bay.

    • @briggsquantum
      @briggsquantum 2 года назад +2

      @@williamgolden839 The Fox body Mustang 5.0 has the "double" oil sump pan and when it is centered on the Volvo crossmember the engine is perfectly placed. So much so that the T5 shifter is centered in the transmission tunnel opening. I didn't even change the front springs as the suspension drop was only about 1 inch with the Ford. For a Chev engine things are tighter and heavier to complete the swap.

    Back in the very early 80s I had a 1976 264GL; same engine, 4-door body with the "upright" greenhouse and "ugly", sticky-outy taillights. Mine had the "euro" headlights with the wipers/washers (that basically seized soon after getting the car.) The trans was a 4-speed manual with an electric overdrive; a small switch on top of the shifter engaged the overdrive (when it worked...) Steve is absolutely right about the cams in these engines. More the point, they suffered bad oiling to the top-end (oil passages were easily clogged I guess) and the cams basically ran dry. I remember pulling the rocker covers on it and finding it bone dry. Mine ate the distributor bushings (driven off the right-side cam IIRC). I did get it running again but it was always noisy and pretty lethargic. Interesting history on that engine: It was originally to be a 90-degree V8 but for various reasons (energy shocks, taxation) two cylinders were lopped off to create a V6, one with a weird 90-deg bank angle and uneven firing order. I really loved the look of the Bertone 262C in those days and still find them quite attractive now, some 40 years later. That one looks to be in great shape.

      All the 200 series cars were the same, the only difference was how many doors, the roofline on the 262 Coupé along with the windshield being about 2'ish inches longer due to the chop and they changed the cowl in 1986. Volvo built them for a variety of engines inline 4 cylinders with and without a turbo, the PRV V6 even a VW/Audi diesel inline 6. The basic chassis went unchanged from 1976 to 1993.

    I had one of the first year 5 speed cars. There were only 250 5 speed cars. My dad bought it new and I got it when he was done with it. Mags you were right! The VPR engine ate cam shafts so bad that the dealers hole sawed the firewall on both sides and put rubber plugs in them so you didn’t have to remove the heads each time a camshaft failed. I think we replaced them 4 times from 1978 to 1994.

    Years ago, there was a chopped Volvo wagon in Columbus, Ohio, that was built using the windshield from one of these. When I lived in Athens, I got to do some rust repair on a coupe, that was owned by Diana Ross's sister. I made a pencil rubbing of the Bertone stickers it had, and a friend had an early decal cutting machine who made a bunch of us copies of that sticker. Those rear axles were popular with local street rodders, due to the disc brakes they came with. Maybe the bolt circle was 5 on 4 1/2"?

Also adding a resister to the tachometer to compensate for the extra two firing cylinders. Paul Newman had a Volvo wagon with a Chevy V8 5 speed, David Letterman may have had one also.

    That's a 66 Volvo "Amazon" wagon in my picture, just a simple rugged car. The B series four cylinder engines they used then look like something out of a tractor, with two SU carburetors. Probably because they also used them in tractors and boats and probably cement mixers for all I know.
    This one I upgrade from a B18 to a B20, or 1.8 to 2 liters and an overdrive transmission. That got me a few horse power I never noticed and a little quieter ride on the highway, when I remember to hit the overdrive switch.
    Need to start driving it again, loved it but I bought a modern BMW and got spoiled by all the creature comforts. 😆

    is that Volvo (and that Charger) IN the junkyard, or are they employees cars? They look a little too nice to be in the boneyard.

    there were a couple 5.0 conversion kits in the 90s . I think even Car and Driver had a single page article on 1.

    Those 2.7 PRV V6's were not a bad thing as such but the smaller oil feed galleries to the Cams meant that if you didnt do 7500 mile oil and filter changes or used a cheaper oil they would get clacky real fast lol
    The US conversion kit at the time came from a company called Jags that Run or JTR and was a simple chromoly tube bolt in setup for SB Ford engine and the AOD Transmissions.
    The beauty of the V6 Volvo was that the brakes, suspension and even the power steering pump could be retained and were more than adequate with a 302 or 351 and the kits worked fine in 200/700 and even 900 series RWD Volvo's.
    I prefer the 760 platform for a V8 swap, easier too re the speedometer as its electronic with the sensor in the diff pumpkin but having converted and dailyed both id swear that the Volvo Engineers had V8's in mind when they first designed the 200 series and subsequent RWD platforms.
    BTW, early 164 Volvos had a 3.0 inline 6 both carby and Bosch D jetronic EFI injection NOT the PRV V6

    You can only improve it when you bolt in a Ford. I've seen that same swap in a few Volvo wagons.
