More useful than you think. The tracks give it a wider turning radius though, wouldn't be surprised if they had brakes on the individual tracks to help with that, but the whole idea of the half track is it's more all-terrain than a normal truck and it supports more weight which allows it to be armoured to the point of being bulletproof to small arms fire, and on the front it's resistant to .50 caliber and AT rifle fire thanks to clever angling.
The answer was given by the german army: Initially they were designed to pull artillery, because of the front wheels the turning is more gentle so the artillery suffers less. The german army units sometimes complained when the fully tracked "Ostschlepper" was used that the artillery suffered when turns were made.
Robert H. Goddard: The Father of Rocketry Actually, I believe they had a sort of power steering in that the tracks would spin at different speeds as the steering wheel was turned to aid in turning.
@@roberth.goddardthefatherof6376 They steered very well compared to the american half tracks. SdKfz had differential steering when the radius had to be small and they where way better off-road because of the longer tracks. The differential steering is activated by turning more then 2/3, don't know where you got the information that they didint know how to steer the vehicle :)
@ 1:02 the Knight tactical marking is from the 505th s.Pz.Abt 505 In yellow on the front it looks as if the vehicle served as a Battalion Staff vehicle for the s.Pz.Abt 505 As the Yellow tactical symbol is a dark pennant over a Panzer tactical symbol.
Thanks for responding. Do you know of any photos or clips on the web in which it is easy to compare the sizes of some or all of the German halftracks: 1t, 3t, 5t, 8t, 12t, 18t? I'm thinking of them psearch.hmynewswire.co/?uid=61c38600-6376-4e37-9511-b5e86a9037a0&uc=20170811&ap=appfocus1&source=news-googledisplay-v2-bb8&page=newtab&implementation_id=currentnews_4.0.17epros, with as them parked next to one another. Dang, hearing the actual sounds of German armor with headphones, I can imagine the horror it was to see these vehicles roll into many towns and cities across Europe. Truly frightening.
Nyamuk Gentayangan maybe because the orginizers of militracks didn't want to go trough a fuck ton of paper work when they aren't even going to use them

Funny how you didn't go anywhere that I couldn't go in my bone stock 1969 VW beetle! Also, funny how you drove on a road the entire time. Guess "off road" means different things to different people. German war machines were all so cool and beautiful. That Sdkfz.251 is one of the most badass looking machines ever.
I find it looks very futuristic for a vehicle from the 30s.
@@wilhufftarkin8543 sometimes i feel surreal when seeing vehicles like mark iv tank in actual battlefield pictures, they look so steampunk

Quite useful - they steer it.

These passengers seem relaxed & carefree. Aren't they afraid of an ambush by the partisans?
Its the Netherlands, the partisan's are hiding in the "weeds".

Brilliant! Love the 'off road' in the title! Great to see them though.
Those vehicles make anybody look cool 😎
Pretty funny how most of them are these big hulking half tracks. Then there’s just that one SD.KFZ 2
kettenkrad just rolling along with them
crazy to think that these vehicles was used to oppress so many people and now they are being used for fun rides.
A great assortment of German half-tracks. About all that was missing was a SdKfz 3 'Maultier'.
I am not joking with this comment, where can I buy an actual one that works and for how much?
lol
wondering the same, seem like not alot of people sell half track or at least a replica of it
I think I saw an 18 ton FAMO prime mover around 1:40. Great vid.
