One of the best GenX singer/songwriters hands down.
The real Queen of Indie & Alternative is coming for her throne.
can't wait for "Choir of the Mind"!
How I've missed The Soft Skeleton. Can't wait for the album.
Emily's song writing is absolutely superb. Her music has helped me get through rough times. I really hope the tour makes a stop in Buffalo.
She's stuck with me when no one else has.
"how much do I own you?" this is amazing.
Kolby Dickens At first I assumed she asked the driver "How much do I OWE you?" But on the 2nd viewing I heard "How much do I OWN you?" Great metaphor for how the government controls us.
+11cylynt11. I think she's critiquing more along wealth inequality/corporatocracy/plutocracy/late stage capitalism lines...
GreenGretel Yes I agree the song and video reference all that you mentioned and more. For example, I interpreted the crystals as "shiny" things that corporations use to distract us form real issues, like lack of clean water. Hence why she was inspecting the water carefully and ended up buying the crystals instead. Crystals are used in making all current electronics. So I interpret the crystals to represent new technology. Technology has made our lives easier. But we need clean water over techno gadgets to live.
Pretty sure the crystals represent perspective.
Billy that's an interesting interpretation. Please explain?
That final look at the end.. she is like. "Im back bitches! Hello mainstream world, what you got?" And when she shrinks her eyes a little she express a badass acceptance for a challenge like "Come at me." I love the fact that she appears with make up and expensive shoes, good looking dress and generally glamorous just so that she can fit in and bring her music into that world. Nothing wrong with dressing good, glamorous and smart, it's just that most of those women spend too much on their appearances and what they have to offer is very predictable and nothing original to the music industry while our girl appears as she needed to forced herself to walk the same road but stayed true to her roots. It looks like she has done it so that she can be noticed just like any other "mainstream singer" out there. She is pretty and owns her style/music she is not owned by her style/music so that she could be seen pretty. She looks so glamorous AND she is there to represent what's not supposed to be that glamorous. It's a revolutionary trick and a 2 plus for her!!! Glamourous Emily just as amazing as candid Emily. I love her.
My question would be, as I start to discover this woman, why is she not already a legend?
At least among those who speak English?
This person is the best lyricist I have heard this century.
Music is quite moving, as well, but her lyrics are of the kind they will be teaching in English Literature classes 30 years from now.
Not very familiar with her music, unfortunately, but I will be, because this cannot be ignored I am looking through some of her songs and I am stunned. I feel guilty that I never noticed before.
She is a master.
Bill Roubanis Terrific question!
I love meeting people like you, who are new fans and appreciate her song writing.... She has had way more sophisticated, honest and abstract songs than this one... I wonder by now how much you've heard! Pleaseeee let me know!
she's the greatest lyricist and songwriter of this century, and I'll fight anyone who disagrees
@@sundin2799 As someone who loves Haines' lyrics and been a huge fan for years, I see your challenge and counter with Suzanne Vega
@@Wonko-bj4jx aw buddy, (coming from a spanish family) she's a special one, but when it comes to songwriting, lyric writing and pure raw talent, I've thought about it long and hard, but Haines' music actually deserves to be in a category of its own. to me at least, never found anyone who can create a new sound with every album be it metric or her own stuff. COMPLETELY ORIGINAL.
but gotta love vega, just my opinion
Wow never thought Emily would make a solo comeback. Saw that this was an older track from a year or so ago under Metric's name but it really fits here. Looking forward to seeing you on tour.
I fucking love her.
I keep coming back to this video.. incredibly well made, both this video and the song. There are so many subtle, well thought out touches. One I love is when she gets out of the cab and it seems as though she's going to a red carpet event but it ends up being the rug in front of a convenience store instead. Great work..
boy i can't wait for this album to come out, potentially top 10 this year for me
"The things you own, they own you, I know it's a deceptive deal, we accept the fatal gift, they hover over where we live" *CHILLS*
There's an old song I knew by her, years ago, that I just can't remember. Even though I can't remember the tune or the name, I remember the emotion it brought me. It was nostalgia and sadness. I've been looking all over and can't find it anywhere. I love the newer stuff, of course, but there will always be that one song that was different from the rest. And I will never remember it.
Do you remember any lyrics? We could help you out.
Finally she's doing real music again (like metric in their firsts EPs and LPs), not like the last 2 (or it was 3?). I've missed this vibes so much! I've missed Emily's own voice and personal POV!
Daniel Guðmundsson no one asked
dom enic like any of the opinions on internet
One of the best song of Her.
So worth the wait.
I fall in love everytime I hear her voice
So stoked for this record!!! 💓
amazing song, i'm so glad for this upcoming album
Thank you Emily! I can't wait to hear the rest of the new album. :)
Thank God she s back.. I love metric but her solo Stuff is badass
beautiful song!
she's back!!
This sounds more like an old Metric song than an EH & SS song. Either way, it's a refreshing return to form for Emily.
James Darling it’s like she wants to get back to old metric.
Joe Tetu And boy did she ever!
FANTÁSTICA EMILY HAINES !!!
I really enjoy this music and video :))
Emily has to be stalking me!
Knives spoke to me where I was 10 years ago, and so is this lol.
This reminds me of one of my favorite lines from "Fight Club," where Brad Pitt says "The things you own end up owning you."
This song is owning me right now🌞
この曲は、美しいです!This song is beautiful!
おめでとうございます。Compliments.
Amazing!
Omg !
Amazing. 😍😍😍
GOOSEBUMPS
Is metric still together as a band? Don't think I could mentally cope without more music from them 😂
yess, they continue making music
Wide-eyed hearing this from the demo released a couple of years ago
The song is really cool! :D
1:34 phillip glass reference
Aaaww! Emily
i cried
Emily and Billy Corgan should totally write an album together!!
First heard her with Metric singing Dead Disco.
♥
2:00 im hearing a bit of the man who sold the world by bowie
very attractive at the tender age of 43
It's late where I live.
As this picked up in tempo, I was increasingly bothered by how close it sounds to another song I'd heard before. Finally figured it out though: Safer in the Forest by La Dispute. Good song though, dig it.
Fuck, I cried.
So much delicious ear candy on this album.
i like the bass line
So cool
"How much do I own you?"
This is like when I discovered Devin Townsend
Fucking incredible
background sounding a little nirvana?
I'M FUCKING SCREAMING!!!!
Owned
So.. how much was it?
THAT VIDEO WAS BOMB AF. also, hasn't this been released before?
B side from Pagans in Vegas by Metric. Different arrangement here. The first Soft Skeleton EP and LP were great but the synth here really feels like early 2000s Metric. So perfect.
you is righttt it really does :)
EaRgAsM✨✨

Great Friday
Steven Wilson and Emily Haines show new video :3
Isn't it magical?
melonhead said to come check it out, me gusta :^)
she's poetic and instrospective and gloomy... i've missed her!
OH MY GOD EMILY HAINES. ❤❤
Don't get distracted by all the shiny things they sell you. Those things can end up owning you.
Yes, I've never felt the need to show boat extravagant material possessions when there are starving people in this world it's sickening how much money is wasted when there are so many that are literally starving.
Yes! I feel the same as you. If only more people thought this way, the world would be a better place for everyone.
oh dear, I always need to fight my tears when hearing this ... the beginning, the voice, the piano ... good lord .. it's very angelic !! a masterpiece of Emily
oh my god i have been in love with this song since the demo was released. this is gorgeous! ❤️
Love love love - talented and stunning and haunting as usual - Emily Haines & soft skeleton is indie noir - love the electronical influences as well as the visual return to hooded em. I couldn't love it more
Omg. I don't know what to say and how much I can say that would make sense to anyone else... the hoodie! the piano! her eyes! the shop! Today is my favourite day! I never expected the soft skeleton to be back... Not only is back but there is also a video!!! I've only watched it once but I'll write down what I thought of it by my first view... There is a sense of reverse chronology through it, the ending is shown first here. I love that we see another Emily with a hoodie (the hoodie being a symbol of solo, kinda melancholic, emily) watching the other Emily with a hoodie (i would prefer one of them not in the hoodie but in a glamorous outfit like the one at the end, something that would give vibes of the anthems of a 17 year old girl song). I love that she visits that shop... a reference to her first soft skeleton video dr blind! is it the same shop??? overall im left with a beautiful feeling... welcome back emily haines and the soft skeleton! it's been 11 years!!!
She's so talented and beautiful!
I'm so glad she released this new song.
How I've waited for another similar output from her!
It's going to be difficult waiting until September for the new album to come out.
Powerful as always, beautiful and unexpected.
1:49 .... - David bowie "The Man Who Sold The World"
Good comparison, there are definitely some similarities! Emily likes to reference the greats
I see others in the comments here are also loving how the new songs are so reminiscent of early Metric. This feels, in just the right way, similar to Rock Me Now (the song that got me hooked on Emily's work!) with all the different vocals at once and I'm living for it. What a treat to have your favourite musician revisit the vibe of your favourite album all these years later!
Rock Me Now is a tune.
I've never been this happy
why i feel like this band got ambience same like catatonia
Thank you! This is amazing.
beautiful album... I really like Emily's creativity and her style.... hello to Canada from Roma
The fatal gift is the gift of life.
i am in heaven, thank you so much
woooooow, how beautiful !!! great artiste
I didn't expect this to be so emo...
I love you Emily Haines!!!!!
WOW! The song.
The video is interesting.
Love you, Emily Haines, and can't wait for the new album! Thank you!

We love, love, love......
Damn, I love their music drive, Metric's and this project.
