I just got back to the game after about 3 years, and the one thing that has helped me get the farthest I've ever been (1000 cycles) is to TAKE IT SLOW. I too tried to get crazy stuff setup at first, such as a full SPOM, or complicated setups and so on.
Focus on one or two projects at most! Keep food simple!
I survived about 300 cycles with just two oxygen generators because I stayed with 10 duplicants, as a quick example. Also keeping everything in storage (I'm using rail conveyors to keep everything to a single room in two tiles) has really helped my duplicants take care of their actual tasks instead of trying to sweep up everything.
I just got finished taming my first ever iron volcano, and I'm about to start going to space (Yes, at 1000 cycles, I'm still learning!)

This is why I love the game there is so much to learn and even in the hundreds of hours you still learn more every playthrough!

Full SPOM is too much for a newer player with 11 dupes at this stage of the game. It takes a lot of effort to get running and can be frustrating to get started, and even keep running... providing enough fresh water can be a challenge early on. I use 3 stages of SPOM... a mini SPOM with only 1 electrolyser, a half Rodrigues with 2 electrolysers and the full Rodrigues as in the video, I do often skip the half though as I find going from 1 mini to a full is manageable. I find the mini SPOM will keep me going until 12 dupes and is very easy to set up and maintain. I fell into the full SPOM trap a few times, I blame watching too many experienced streamers :)

I agree in most of my playthroughs I use the mini SPOMs at the start. I hold off on the large SPOM as long as that much O2 is not needed. But that is the beauty of ONI you learn more from those issues and then the next playthrough is always better.

So why do you have bathroom breaks randomly? That's a huge waste of duplicate time running. 3 break 3 sleep works great until you get a large base and still stagger break/sleep. I never have scheduled a bathroom break, they go in rec time.

That schedule was put in place before I started fixing this save. In most cases you are right it may not be needed. I think if there are showers there is a morale bonus that could be taken advantage of.
