By soil I assume you refer to regular potting soil. It is not good for bonsai purposes because roots need air, not only moisture and nutrients. Regular potting soil quickly gets compact to a point where very little air gets in, and we risk root rot. The mix he is using is standard for bonsai purposes, and although it is not suitable for all tree species, it allows for a good balance of moisture and aeration, which is what tree roots need the most. Bonsai trees are regularly (weekly or biweekly) fertilised, so the lack of nutrients found in potting soil is not an issue.

Why is this so satisfying
Nice video! Can't wait for the "How dead corpses get professionally revived" video!
Now I wanna hear some bonsai ASMR. I wanna hear that sap get moist and the roots expanding
Amazing transformation
Wonderful job! The tree looks so much better!
Dude gotta whole Christmas tree in there
I'm surprised he didn't add anymore soil and give it a bigger pot, you'd think it was running out of space for the roots
That's the point of bonsai. U keep it in a small pot like that, and trim the roots back. (More frequently than the previous owner did) That's how the trees stay small but still mature. And that's only a training pot. That tree will end up in a pot half as deep.
Never thought that bonsai are also restored 😐😯
Yeah it happens when you don’t manage the canopy growth, properly water it and fertilize and don’t repot the tree when the time is needed. If you completely abandon the tree for several seasons it could die
So many life lessons can be learned by this video.
my left ear really enjoyed this video
all I hear is mr. Miyagi yelling BONZAI!! lol
Relaxing video, thank you🤗
Its 11:49 and i should prolly sleep now😭
Good morning
He had almost no soil in that pot. Figured the tree would die
The before and after is amazing!
Yeah, its amazing what a bit of green paint can do.
My left ear loved this video
Those roots looked like a damn floormat POL
I wonder if an aeration layer be helpful in all plants? Like my hardy hibiscus, for example
Bonsai is so beautiful!
