  • In this video we tour the former Mall at Steamtown, now more properly called, the Marketplace, because it is in fact, a place and no longer a mall.
This beautiful establishment was built partially on the abandoned railyard owned by Conrail in the 1970's. It had the potential to thrive yet over the years has become nothing short of an indoor center city. Full of empty spaces, under constructions signs, practically no real retailers and check this, one of it's anchors is a Community College! Boscov's, you may want to find a new home....

It's sad. I remember this mall being cool and having the most unique stores. The only thing that didn't change much is the Boscov's. They used to sell furniture in the Crunch fitness area. The mall seems to be busier with the new medical offices, but it's still pretty dead.

You’re right it’s sad. I really enjoyed the aesthetic of this mall. It’s in the perfect location. I am not from there so I am not sure what happened and why it didn’t succeed as a mall but it’s super unfortunate. Thanks for watching !

I remember how much this mall used to have.
I used to go Steamtown Mall a lot when I was a kid back in the early 2010s, and I remember how many stores there were and how they had a big food court. I didn't realize until years later that when Bonton closed in 2014, about every store closed down. Around the time they rebranded to the marketplace, I saw the construction that was being done.
I still go to Steamtown to this day, but not as much since there's not a lot there now.

It’s such a shame cause the mall itself is in a great location! I hate how they out weird things in malls like medical centers and a community college in this one I believe?

It’s nice they found alternative uses for this mall. So many are now empty and decaying or demolished. There is so much that can be done with an old mall.

10:08 Idk if you can tell, but those were once fountains. It made me so mad to see them filled with mulch, because they were really pretty back in the day, all backlit.
The area with all the vendor booths was the food court; that’s where all tables once were. The outside/balcony area overlooking the trains is where all the kids used to go to make out. Lol. At one point, they had a carousel in the food court. Is Abercrombie still there? If so, are you still choked by the cologne at the entrance? Lol.

Steamtown used to be the more popular mall compared to Viewmont, then it just died over the years.

Thank you for bringing to the publics attention the declining mall, as it's a trend now! However, I wasn't prepared to do the cha- cha along with it- lol!

Man, if this person only came into my store that proudly sits in this building, they'd experience an arcade, see that the business model of the 90s just doesn't work anymore, and maybe be a supporter of small businesses. But crapping on "dead malls" gets more views, sooooo..

Thanks for your comment. We absolutely support small businesses and that’s the whole entire theory in supporting dead malls and not turning them into commercial establishments. If only more small businesses could afford renting space in these large commercial malls, there wouldn’t be ‘dead malls’. I support you 100%.

It's dead . Just like Wyoming and just like the bloom . To be honest not worth it . Waste of gas.

Recently just visited Wyoming Valley - it had a few upgraded retailers and a new food court vendor. Maybe there is hope!
