There is nothing like this now. Sheer genius. People were distracted by the bizarre, often overlooking the sheer brilliance of the literary and musical scope of this marvellous band.
If you ever get a chance, theres a UK band that emerged around the same time who had a similarish vibe, Cardiacs. They kinda looked like homeless clowns, and played very creative psychedelic pop. Almost sounding like the unholy bastard child of Split Enz , Syd Barrett and Frank Zappa, and if that sounds weird, well yes, yes it is. People seem to either fundamentally hate them, or have an almost religious reverence for it. Probably depends on yr tolerance for very very bent prog-pop
@@shayneoneill1506Love me some Cardiacs...Props to you...I'm trying to decode the singer's lyrics....It's deep poetry about the shallow currents we live in...I think....they is blowing my minds...Thanks for the lead to the Cardiacs.
Phil Judd was such a huge player in Split Enz. I was lucky enough to see their very first USA performance in a tiny (teeny) Boston club. They walked on, of course, in full make up and the crowd just said a silent, "WTF" and then we were BLOWN way. How very cool. What great theater rock...and all else. @@jwosborne4262 oh that was great...thank you. at a mere 47 myself, i only go back to remembering their countdown appearances with one step ahead..and was hooked ever since.
Manzanera did an incredible job giving the bands fabulous songs the production they deserved. The result? One of the greatest albums ever recorded. And I have over 1000 albums!
I remember back in the mid-70s, music started to get strange in a rather interesting way. Groups like Sparks, Kraftwerk, Roxy Music (with Eno)... and I still can clearly recall being intrigued by the “Mental Notes” LP by Split Enz in the local record store.
Being a Kiwi, I am so overwhelmed with pride when I read all the positive comments about Split Enz. I've never heard this song (that I can remember) before and it is a great song showing how much ahead of their time they were. I think that is Tim Finn standing with Noel Crombie :)
Teina Nanai I fell for Split Enz when I first heard True Colours in a record store as a college freshman in Austin, TX back in 1979/80. Saw them in Austin around 1982. It was outdoors by Town Lake. I can still remember standing by a tree on that summer night hearing them sing "What more can a poor boy do?" One of the best bands ever. Crowded House was great as well. More recently I saw The Hobbit and I felt proud to see that Neil got to sing a song over the credits. I was all like "That's my boy Neil Finn!"
Syncopating the sax solo (@2:44) over the bass and drums lines, each playing under different beat patterns was (wow!) brilliant musicianship on their part!
I finally got to see the "ENZ" when they got back together at the Michael Fowler centre Wellington! Highlight of my life!! Thanks guys, it was night I'll never forget!!
I've been a fan since 1976. My husband and I had our first real date seeing them at the Cellar Door in Washington DC. I was afraid of Noel Crombie. The rest were strictly adorb in my opinion. Poor Juddy.
How did they pack so many inventive and varied hooks into this? It's like about 5 or 6 songs in 1. The acoustic bits that bookend it remind me of 'Good Riddance' by Greenday.
blew my mind in 1975. They were trying hard to be as weird as they could. Still love the outfits. In retrospect, the greasepaint and mugging is a bit much. But the music was as good as the best prog rock of the day and still stands up.
This song is incredible and raises the genre to exulted heights. It's as good as anything. The last last lines are simply brilliant in flipping the narrative from his own loss of innocence to the other - a kiss of death delivered with such composure and dignity.
This song is, indeed, brilliant. I love the later Enz, as well as Crowded House, but the original line up really had something special. I'm glad to see it getting so much airtime on RUclips. Thanks for posting!
I hear more Roxy Music than Genesis in this. I wonder if Phil Manzanera thought the same as he produced this song. Influences aside, it’s Split Enz all the way. It’s an absolute classic to me.
Sweetdreamzzzz is from 'Second Thoughts' a re-hash of 'Mental Notes with a few replacement Tracks...incl. 'Sweet Dreams' & 'Late Last Night' added in London for Second Thoughts...Produced by Phil Manzanera ( Roxy Music) and released in 1976...(although written earlier! ) Greast Album! Both Albums were 'special' in their own ways!
I was introduced to this band by a friend back in the early 80's and he let me record his Waiata LP onto a cassette tape. I love that album. One of those songs popped in my head the other day so I decided to check out the band. Their work is timeless and showcases some serious talents in song writing. I'd never heard this song before. It is amazing and the video is wonderfully bizarre and fun.
Oh my god, this is just f**king brilliant - EVERYTHING about this video is just so incredible. What a crazy, brave and creative force they were. Magic.
And, I thought no one did music like this before Tuxedomoon! Wow! How did I miss these guys? This is like the missing link between early Genesis (with Peter Gabriel), and Tuxedomoon and Devo...and just about everything that came thereafter.
A while ago I had a fever dream that involved Carol Channing singing this song. Although I have no recollection of the dream itself, I woke up with it very firmly stuck in my head. It must have been an... interesting dream.
Phil Judd is singin lead vocal on this Gem...Neil Finn Joined the Band in 1977 a year after this recording. This was the last of the "Early Enz"....Timeless Brilliance.
The overt joviality of this song masking a not so much dark but very deep emotional arc for the singer and the person they sing this for is something else. I know all too well what this song is all about.
Split Enz - a New Zealand inspiration to so many Australian musicians. I saw them in concert twice.i miss them so much. they had the formula right in my view. fun catchy brilliantly produced songs / costumes... I really wanted to be in the band (even just to play spoons or something - Noel's original job)
I think Tim & Noel need to bring the onsies look back! hahaha Have always loved this song! I still can't believe Tim & Neil's son's, liam & harper are making music as well. Man I feel old, cuz I am!!! Love from the States..Stay Well!!!!!!
Same here. I had heard the name before but never really thought i would dig it. Same thing happened recently with the Eurythmics. I couldn't tell you how many times i would listen an album over and over. I never saw it coming.
OMG I LOVE THIS!!! WE JUST TIME TRAVELED BACK TO AGE 10 WHEN I FIRST HEARD THIS SONG AND HAVENT HEARD IT SINCE ...LOVED IT THEN LOVE IT NOW THANK YOU!!!!

Their sublime bizarreness is why I've been a fan for about 4 decades now.

The split Ens where the best band that ever existed. We tried to be Okay with ourselves. We arent quite there yet. I cant handle the truth.

It's possible that they haven't gotten the credit they deserve because they're from New Zealand. Being so far away from North America and Europe.
I was reared in East Texas and Split Enz opened my horizons as a teen in the the early '80s.
The most important and Sadly underrated band ever. To far ahead of their time and the world was to slow to catch on.
My 6 month old LOVES this song and video. She has kicked to the beat and always grins on the close-ups of Phil.
Syncopating the sax solo (@2:44) over the bass and drums lines, each playing under different beat patterns was (wow!) brilliant musicianship on their part!
It's like four or five different songs. Amazing.
You've nailed it, Luis, brilliant stuff!
one of the greatest songs ever recorded. sound and visual perfection.
SHEER BRILLIANCE! love Tim's hair, and great to see the much-missed later on Phil Judd here.GREAT song.
their image was care of Noel Abercrumbie who will later become their drummer, he did play the "spoons" on many tracks.....
I finally got to see the "ENZ" when they got back together at the Michael Fowler centre Wellington!

Thanks guys, it was night I'll never forget!!
Coated in strangeness, the lyrics are deeply heartfelt and pretty tragic, a beautiful song either way
"I fell for your etiquette the first time we ever met" is one of my favorite lines ever.
This is almost 45 years ago but sounds timeless....
One of the coolest songs ever written.....
I first saw this when I rented a Split Enz VHS video collection in the early 1990's. Been a fan ever since.

Noel was/is a pussycat and brilliant on drums/percussion. He designed and made all The ENZ costumes.
So must love for You and jour husbAnd

Just bought the early years box set recently. Worth every bit i paid for it. I hope i can pass it on to one of my kids some day.

Wow what a song! Split Enz went through many phases this is definitely my favourite. Very unique.
I hear more Roxy Music than Genesis in this.

This is really ahead of its time!
This is the best singalong song of all times
Not ahead lad...it was in 1976! That s about it!
Holy Moly they were WAY avant garde for 1976!!...Love I Got You...
Eddie Rayner churning it up on the Mark IV mellotron! : )
Just like mine.
Great song. Very talented players. Love this band.
This is just fantastically bizarre. And a great song on top of it all. Way, way, way ahead of the 'new wave' curve.

Does this remind anyone else of early Genesis stuff? Like when Gabriel was still with them?
Love Genesis, but they never had this much fun! :-)
sonicfrogdotnet they did you know
They probably did :-)
The difference was that it was Gabriel who was doing all the outlandish stuff on stage. With the Enz, they all did it.
