      Yep. Before Bird's VERY disabling lower back AND both achilles being injured, Bird was being talked about my a number of bball pundits as the GOAT. I still think Jordan's exploits ended up overtaking Bird as the GOAT, but while Jordan, Magic, Kareem, Barkley, WIlkins, etc. were all in the league and playing at high levels, Bird won 3 MVPs in a row (only other players in NBA history to do that were Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain).
      As far as all-around player, I don't think anyone can match Bird to this day. LeBron and Jokic are right up there, but LB was just the man.

    • @marksmith4346
      @marksmith4346 6 месяцев назад +22

      LB averaged 25ish against Rodman while getting his boards and assists. Pretty good against one of the best defenders ever. People have to keep in mind too, if LB talked smack to the other coach and could get that coach second guessing himself, he already won. One story about the Bulls team said he talked smack to the coach and they pulled the forward off of him and put the center on him, kept scoring using speed so they put Jordan on him, and LB just shot over him. Imagine a young Micheal Jordan trying to carry the offense and then having to hustle back to guard a bigger guy pushing him into the post. Ended the game with a forward guarding him...

    @Nick Smith NBA, You do a great job putting these together & I want to Thank You. One Of My Fav's Is The Story You Did On 1988 Wilkins & Larry's 4th Quarter Shoot Out. It Was Such A Good Story Especially Knowing How Larry Was Hurting In That Game & You Could SEE He Wasn't Feeling Good & Still Gave It His All. NOTE: Someone in a comment had said it was written in the News Paper after that game; They had found out Larry also Played with having Bronchial Pneumonia.

      It must have been good. In Detroit I went to many Pistons games with the Bad Boys and in Chicago I went to see MJ vs Lakers before MJ had any rings. I've not been to a a game in many many years. This year my pistons tied all time loss record of 27 losses in a row. Todays NBA not as good for sure.

    A sportsman to the core. It is always great to hear any player give compliments to another player (any sport), that means there is respect between both players. That is missing now and it shows on the rink, court and field. Thank you for putting this together, other pros need to learn what it is to be a classy pro.

    Nice edit Nick! I am an older guy from Indiana, followed Larry from the college championship game v Magic. He was incredible, so sad his career was cut short. For me peak Larry is my first pick all time to build a team around. I have never seen anyone play harder or play more hurt than Legend to help his team win a basketball game.

    I watched Bird thru binocs at the old Memorial Coliseum in Portland for a 1/2. He get a rebound by jumping 6" while 3 guys around him were jumping 2'. How'd he do that again and again? He read where the ball would bounce - never heard anyone talk about the guy's instinct for predicting where the ball would go.

      I played ball for fun, and was by no means great, but I was better than most of friends. I had that knack for being able to tell where the ball was going to rebound to, and would hustle to get it.
      I would play BBall at lunch time in Junior High. I remember playing 1v1, and beating 4 different people in 1v1 until I was too tired to beat the 5th.
      I always loved BBall back in those those, and have great respect for all the great players of that era.

    • @midnightrider1100
      @midnightrider1100 3 месяца назад +2

      Many of the older players would because they worked on skills other than the 3 point shot. The thing today's players have on them is they have mastered the 3 pointer. On good nights, they might dominate. On bad nights, when their shooting was off, and it happens, they would have nothing to fall back on and get obliterated.

    I spend lots of time watching the Larry Bird trash talk videos. This one was really good.
    I was lucky enough to watch this in real time.
    You don't hear it on TV so watching the replays knowing he probably just told the other team what was coming is great.
    The 80's to early 90's was the best time for the NBA.
    It has superstars but was still a team game.
    I had a bunch of favorites.
    I actually was a fan of both the Lakers and Celtics but also liked guys like Barkley, Hakeem the Dream, and Spud Webb.
    Now, it's all about "me, me, me". Too bad.

    Hey Folks. A few observations. First, I’ve been a Lakers fan since 1967 so I was NEVER a Celtics fan. I hated ALL Celtics UNTIL I read Larry Bird’s autobiography. This book pointed out the commitment and dedication Bird had as a youth as he began to learn the game. Second, I have a saying that I often attribute to Kobe Bryant (RIP) but I’ll use it here for Bird. “Sometimes, the other guy is just better than you”. That was Larry Bird in his prime! 😎

    I love this. I watched many games back in Larry's time, and he was great. I was a big time Lakers fan, since I live in Southern California, and the Lakers Celtics rivalry was awesome.
    The late 70s and 80s were a great time for basketball with the Showtime Lakers, Celtics, Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets, Spurs, the Utah Jazz (a great team that just could not get a title), Phoenix Suns, etc., and then when the Bulls finally came into their own and dominated.
