    Yah gotta be the worst commander to send in all your Calvary men separately and randomly instead of joined up in a line as a proper force. Hell im a graphic designer and i could lead this army better than this rebel bloke.

      +Darklarik His army size was larger, commanders with number superiority will do this. There are actually quite a few of them throughout history. Sometimes its best to just overwhelm your enemy with number if you have it but sometimes it doesn't work. The Greeks have a long history being underestimated by larger armies.

    • @thrustvectoring8120
      @thrustvectoring8120 8 лет назад +5

      +AuomAk No, none of the civilised generals would send their cav down the battlefield at random with huge spaces in between them against a spear formation. Plus, a real horse would not sprint a head on that formation just suiciding, horses are smart animals, they would break the formation and run around them. That is why the square infantry formation was developed, that is why the Holy Roman Empire adopted the snake maneuver - attack the enemy linear formation with the cav, when the horse starts to turn, shoot your gun, load the gun, turn the horse, when it starts to turn on its own, shoot again, load your gun and repeat.

      @NiekGAE 8 лет назад +7

      +AuomAk Overwhelming the enemy with superior numbers, yes. Charging from hundreds of meters away, widely spread out, against a massed block of prepared spearmen in tight formation? No way. You march up to them to keep your men in formation as long as possible and prevent early fatique. When possible you move to outflank or at least stretch their lines, so a breakthrough is more easily accomplished which allows you to engulf your enemy. If a head on cavalry charge doesn't seem like it'll break the enemy (which did happen often as a charging horseman is quite terrifying) you don't charge home but save them for when the enemy is locked in combat (easy with superior numbers, especially if the enemy has 0 cavalry). Like +AumAk said, horses are not keen on charging into a forest of enemy spears.
      Running into the center of an infantry block one at a time? Come on nobody did this and nobody would order it.
      The Persians failed miserably against the greeks on a number of occasions despite their numbers yes, but they didnt use 'tactics' like this. In the famous battles at Marathon and Platea they were mostly being charged by Greeks, while at Thermopolylae they couldn't use their numbers for flanking and instead tried to smash through with massed infantry. Key word massed, not single soldiers.
      This was just an over the top movie gorefest, one army of 'bad guy' mindless drones vs the (for now) 'good guys' army which is superb. Also kind of the enemy to mostly leave the supreme solo fighters alone.
      Its rather frustrating to watch actually. I want some amount of common sense in movies, yes even in fantasy films.
      Just like in most movie battles when once the sides clash they turn into a mass of individual duels instead of keeping formations, why? Hell even riots without commanders somewhat keep their lines. But then you always get the "its just a movie" argument, like thats an excuse for illogical and therefore inferior work.

      That's from actual Greek mythology, though. This movie is a slightly different take on Hercules in that they're not all that sure he really is all that special or that strong. This version of Hercules uses deception, cunning and the help of his friends to build his reputation and no one's really sure if he's a demigod or not. Not even his friends know for sure. All they know is that he has unusual amounts of strength and a knack for surviving overwhelming odds. In the actual mythological stories, everyone knew Hercules was immensely strong and a demigod.

    Well apart from the fact that Greeks almost didn't use cavalry on the battlefield, chariots were pretty rare, preferred formation was phalanx not this loose I-don't-know-what-formation, shields were quite different, horses didn't have horseshoes, saddles and stirrups and advancing head on those spikes could be considered as suicide for the light cavalry - this looks quite legit.

  • @DevSolar

    I would prefer if such battle scenes would show *two* generals who know their stuff. I mean, come on. Having the cavalry charge over the complete distance, against a stationary shield wall, outdistancing the infantry and turning its line into an unorganized mess that can be picked off by archers, having out-distanced the infantry by a comfortable margin. By the time the infantry reaches the battle, they are winded.
    What kind of general would employ his troops like that? It makes the "great victory of Hercules" more like a "great blunder by the attacker against some random defender". This is jolting.

If you read Greek mythology, you will understand why we dispise everything Hollywood does to ancient heroes. The original stories have more plot, better characters, better messages and they go deeper once you deside to search

    This you call as shit but imagine in an Indian tamil rajnikant movie version, the hero would have sung & danced all over the battle field while the bow wielding lady would have done some twists and rolls and finally the soldiers would have been killed by his mere look and dialogue. And the people would be drooling for this cinema for a full fuckin' year. Enna?

      Enemy has an army composed of mainly pikemen/spearmen and hardly any cavalry.
      Let's charge our cavalry directly at their phalanx!
