    "Berenike" is the anglicized version of the ancient Greek name "Βερενίκη", which is a name given to women. This might mean that Berenike is actually not the name of the land they come from, but the queen they serve? There is a village of the same name somewhere in the mountains of Greece, every time I drive by and see the sign it reminds me of Dark Souls.

    Couple of things:
    "jon hancock" pointed out that the silver and gold coins are both found in Anor Londo in mimic chests.
    Also, there is the "Soul of a Proud Paladin" in DS3, but there isn't anything in the description to make me think that there is a connection to Paladin Leeroy. Still wanted to make the correction when I said Leeroy was the old mention of a Paladin in the series. Thank you to the commenter who pointed that out. I'll make actual annotations for these in the video when I get back after the weekend.
    Also the music! I know I forgot to put it in the description. I'll update it when I'm at a computer, but for now the track listing is:

      If you look at the gold coin and imagine seeing a face looking to the right, it kinda matches up with the DLC boss. Long hair, long face, short, upturned nose, almost skeletal-looking. That is if he isn't looking to the left, which produces a different "face". Along with Hawkshaw's video, I'm all on board with the curse being made by the WoW until it became an actual epidemic. Lloyd becoming an exile and losing power and influence, except inside this magical painting, seems like a fitting punishment. That and possibly becoming undead himself and getting doused with Estus, which he made a counter for in the real world.

    This video kind of cemented a seed that had been in my head for a long time. Namely, that you HAVE to die to go to Lordran. It’s not simply a rite. Every character who has come to Lordran has had to be undead to do it. I used to think certain things were weird and incompatible, like Gwyn having an uncle when he is one of the first 5 people to exist. But I think it makes a lot of sense when you consider that everything before the Age of Fire happened in some land of the living, where nearly every character in the game was living at some point.
    The Age of Fire wasn’t the true beginning for humanity. During the Age of Ancients, people were off doing lots of cool stuff, just not in Lordran, because to get to Lordran you had to be dead and no one yet had figured out how to be dead yet still alive. Of course, this is pretty speculative, but it makes so many things so much more sensible, to me.

  • @whitet-shirt2133

    Copper coin depicts a Old Man McLoyf god of drink and medicine, I always thought he was the third New Londo Sealer. The others, of course Ingward, and Yuri I believe.
    Balder and Berenike had similar goals, and while Balder was a nation, Berenike was just an order of knights. Since they had similar goals and often found in the same places, could it be that Berenike order is from Balder.
    While there is no hints behind it a lot of people assume that Tarkus was leader of the Berenike Order, based off of similar equipment.
    I do not believe anyone created the Undead Curse, nor can anyone create an Undead. It's a natural phenomenon that occurs when the flame fades the light souls die and the dark soul takes control. Leeroy was not "produced" or created, he unfortunately went Undead and trying to rid themselves of him the Way of White sent him on a suicide mission that only the undying could achieve.
    Alfather Lloyd, I'm not sure if I want to shout out all my ideas on him if you were going to make a video specifically on him, but...
    Allfather Lloyd runs the Way of White. His symbol is the white circlet. He apparently is Gwyns uncle.
    First I believe that Allfather Lloyd is the one and only God of Dark Souls universe. Gwyn, Nito, and the Witch of Izalith were all self proclaimed gods, I just refer to them as Lords, but Lloyd is the true God.
    He's not Gwyn's uncle, that's just gibberish that all kings say to get Divine Right to rule.
    The Way of White praises Lloyd not Gwyn. Gwyneth is only the messenger of Lloyds will.
    Lloyd is not of this world, he is the all-knowing, all-seeing, formless deity, that watches over the world from the heavens.
    Now in DS3, Lloyd has been forgotten, the Way of White disbanded becoming the Way of Blue. Then the Angels descended from the heavens. Why? Maybe some dlc will tell.

      @ibn_adham 3 года назад +1

    i. Undead Church - Both Balder and Berenike, but Berenike only exist once
    ii. Sen's Fortress - Both Balder and Berenike
    iii. Painted World of Ariamis - Only Berenike
    It seems to be that Berenike Knight have different mission because the last place we found them is in the Painted World before the Priscilla fog gate, and Black Iron Tarkus body found before the painting. It looks like they are specifically searching for that painting and get inside to meet with Priscilla
    The last place we found Balder Knight is inside Sen's Fortress, in my opinion, their mission is to stop Berenike Knight for some reason.
    But because of both becoming hollows, they both turn on us The Chosen Undead.

    Great video man. I like that it adds nicely to Hawkshaw's one 'The Way of White', which theory made much sense to me and accepted it quite smoothly. I truly hope that one of these upcoming DLCs takes us to some of these human lands outside Lordran, where we could find more clues about Velka and the Furtive Pygmy. It's deliberated the fact that at this point we still don't know much about them. That you can make a Beatrice lore video and not a convincing one about Velka-Pygmy, being these two hugely important characters.
    It'd be nice if you could risk a theory about them :)

    You've made a very good point about "spawn" of the undead and Way of White. Now the intro makes more sense for me, especially the moment, when the girl (probably member of the church) is dropping a little ember on dead body (probably she's making the dark sign inside this man and by that, creating an undead)
    My thoughts about Balder: we know that knight king Rendall failed. Or did he? That's what Crestfallen Merchant says but he also says that Tarkus failed to reach Anor Londo and we know it's not true. When we kill Gwynevyre we're attacked by one balder knight and one berenike knight. They're the only ones in human form in whole game. There is a possibility that the unhollowed balder knight is actually knight king Rendal, as we've never found his body earlier, or fought his hollowed version (if he failed in Sens Fortress, we could've met him just like prince Riccard). On the other hand that knight drops nothing related to the king, but still, legends about him are too glorious for somebody to be unable to defeat iron golem.
    Lastly, some words about Berenike: Tarkus is the most interesting character of that land, especially his place of death near the painting. My theory is that he dragged attention of guardians and by that let other Berenike knight(s) safely enter the Painted World of Ariamis. We fight one respawning knight just before Priscilla and she says "this land is peaceful, its inhabitants kind" which suggests Berenike knight is ok living in that world.
    I also believe gold and silver coins belonged to Berenike and Balder knights who have joined darkmoon blades as it was their last act of leaving connection with human world.

It states that by legend, knight king Randall slashed drake in pieces, and if we take it as truth, the only dragon cut in pieces is the undead dragon in painted world. So maybe, Randal, pretty much alone, made it to anor londo, even to the painting. MAYBE he's the berenike knight you find there. There isn't pretty much any information about kingdom of Berenike, and balder and berenike knights had very much same goals and were fighting together, as you can see from the duo in dark anor londo

    Couldn't it be reasoned the Berenike were trying to find a cure, or at the least some bloody answers? Knowing only that the undead curse is associated with the gods of Anor Londo. It must have been a tough time for the Baldur Knights as well thinking about it, knowing the source of the curse and I guess their intent must have been the usurpation of the flame plus the bonus of the strength of the lord soul pieces they could gather.
    Is there any correlation between Lotheric and where Baldur was supposed to be?

  • @ashtonfeatherstoneandersen4783

    I think the undead curse goes back to the seed of evil back in Demons Souls, who was likely the cursed offspring of both the Great Tree and the vice of man.
    I always wondered what the difference between an undead and demon.
    Whether its possession from fell souls or rampart madness... Perhaps a combonition of both. its interesting enough to speculate about.

    In regards to the Way of White creating the curse, I would cordially disagree. I would think the religion formed, or reformed, around the undead curse. As for "spawning" and "producing" undead, I consider it more as they would force people to BECOME undead as a way of controlling the populace/ help ensure the fire is linked. They did not necessarily create the curse. After all, the curse appears two more times with the absence of the way of white.
    As for my opinion of how the curse arouse because it is the natural state of humans/gods/etc. Now, my evidence should be taken with a grain of salt since it might be symbolic more than literal. The opening movie for Dark Souls shows hollows and the furtive pygmy as the originators of humans at the about to start age of fire. It's likely humans gained their more human appearance because of the age of fire and the linking of the flames is needed to make them mortal and not undead.
    I believe the undead are attached to bonfires/ fires because of Gwyn's linking of the fire (maybe?) and caused him to turn hollow. Or perhaps it is because of undead's mix of soul, humanity, and curse that allows them to (not sure).

    what if knight king rendel is the first born after his god status was taken. it would explain why he wants to get to anorlondo and why there are balder knights in sens fortress. intrestingly, the serpent men also connect to the nameless king. im not saying the idea is completely flawless,but there is some thematical symmetry.

    Wait!!! In 15:00 -iis, the Balder knight and the other one (I forgot its name) are found in the orenstein and smough area, AFTER gwyndolin stops his illusion, which means orenstein and smough were illusions!
    I have no doubts about it, can anyone back up my theory?

      The fact you fight "Ornstein" again in 2 (and his weapon is in 3, right?) may mean he's an illusion... if he was up with the NK training then the one in Anor Londo may be fake, if it makes you feel better :3

    How the hell can Gwyn have an uncle, Gwyn is literally the Father of the Gods, if he had an uncle then he'd have to have a father, he was the first of his race and nothing but a hollow before finding the Light Soul in the First Flame

    • @mitchl6896
      @mitchl6896 7 лет назад +2

      I think it's odd as well, but does it actually say anywhere that Gwyn was the first "man" ever?

    • @papawhitebeard4648
      @papawhitebeard4648 7 лет назад

      I think it can be pretty fairly surmised using the evidence we have available. I like to think of the hollows we see in the first cinematic as being ancient humans reduced to creatures that are neither living nor dead by the Age of Ancients rolling around, and the kinda "Ash seeketh Embers" thing where the hollows were attracted to the first flame but most were burnt to ash except the 4 we know as the bearers of the soul and then they spilt there souls to make there respective races then marched on the Dragons, which means Gwyn is the very first of the "God" race

    • @fartchamber12
      @fartchamber12 7 лет назад +1

      Uncle doesn't have to be literal, maybe Lloyd was just old in appearance and was close to/advised Gwyn.

    • @AdamArchangel
      @AdamArchangel 6 лет назад +2

      Given that the Painter Girl refers to Gael as Uncle Gael, yet he is almost certainly not of biological relation to her, I take it that the relationship between Lloyd and Gwyn was of a similar nature, not one of blood relation but one of affection and admiration.

Granted, I’m only as far as ds1, but short of later games saying “Yeah, actually, all that stuff wasn’t true, the REAL story is completely different.” which I certainly wouldn’t put past them, I really, really can’t imagine how that could possibly make any sense whatsoever...

    Honestly I wish we got more reference to Balder and Berenike in 3. Lore-wise both sequels of Dark Souls 1 are kind of a mess. Dark Souls 2 gives little to no actual lore or answer and simply piles on more questions, and throws stuff willy-nilly (its nature as a delayed and half-finished sequel being part of the problem), and 3 felt more like the spiritual 2 that just happens to have references to the actual DS2, rather than a proper followup.

    the entire vid is purely speculative. based on a description that can be read in a total different way( balder set). no connection between thorolund and balder has been made. also we dont know if rendall was undead (onion bro daughter).

    • @mitchl6896
      @mitchl6896 7 лет назад

      Lore videos are always speculative and never claim to be the objective truth. Your point?

    • @fenderoid1111
      @fenderoid1111 7 лет назад

      The point is that when u start your vid by saying that it is a subject that hasn't been explored enough and that enb's vid was silly suggests or implies that you have a fuller aspect of the subject. Yet you don't. And maybe that was the reason why there are very few mentions on that subject. There is simply not enough info on Balder or Vinheim or Carim or..... a lot of parts of the game. That is the point.

    • @mitchl6896
      @mitchl6896 7 лет назад +1

      You'd be amazed at what kind of information can be extracted by putting pieces together regarding obscure parts of the story. I made a video on Carim that was over half an hour long which had a very rigorous investigation process to put every single piece of evidence together to form a semi-complete look at the unseen kingdom, but I suppose that's all "baseless speculation" as well, right? if you know about the design philosophy that Miyazaki has, then you'd know that the story structure doesn't just allow speculation, it encourages it.

    • @fenderoid1111
      @fenderoid1111 7 лет назад +1

      Look i don't want to be disrespectful or demeaning. This vid is also ~20 min. I know about Miyazaki and his design philosophy.Which could also be interpreted as he is doing half the job and the rest of us just complete it.The thing about Balder is that it is barely mentioned in the entire trilogy. And using a coin to connect it to thorolund is a leap i wouldn't never make (and not for a lack of imagination). Also if you look at the balder sword desc. the word spawn is replaced by the word outbreak (go figure, but it follows the rules of the curse). That goes against the 'spawned' part of your theory. Which to me feels like you choose what fits to your speculation and what doesn't is simply cast aside.

    Sometimes...just sometimes, subjects aren't picked apart bc there's just not enough info. In that case, this happens. A grasping at straws to create "lore". There's a reason ENB, the OG GOAT (and probably most knowledgeable fellow of lore regarding DS1 for a plethora of reasons) didn't expand on what you see as "goofy".

    • @mitchl6896
      @mitchl6896 7 лет назад

      An interesting opinion. However, I think it's naive to think (especially when it comes to Dark Souls) that "there's nothing there" just because there's less item descriptions to read about. For instance, we never even see Carim in the flesh, yet there's enough information in the games for form a perspective of sorts of what the kingdom may have been like. I don't think ENBs work on this topic is goofy as in "bad," I just think that there could have been a more thorough investigation. If you disagree with points presented in the video, present your own counter-points and I'll read them.
