I’m going to have to rewatch this a few times with a notepad, a lot of knowledge!
ALWAYS great info . . .THANKS!
Whenever I get lost about my diet I come back to this video/interview. There’s so much great advice and knowledge here. Thanks for always giving us the best advice!
Same here
"Account for Life variables." I never really thought of it that way! Great show!!!
The stress level and protein intake correlation was really an eye opener
Sooooo informative!! Thank you 🙏🏼
Excellent stuff!👍
41. I drank every single night. Whiskey. For years. 180-30% BMI.
My wife was skinny. She decided to workout. So I bought her a Smith Cage.
One week after watching her sweat I decided to do it
Gave up crap food.
Gave up whiskey.
Grabbed the weights and just went at it.
Not loosing a lot of fat......gaining muscles though.
Any update?
Keep getting it!!
How's it been going?
@@mdostay good. Stopped drinking. Except i do on Saturday night my non workout day. I got myself on a. Every two hour protein intake. I only had 11 days off due to I caught a cold and my daughter did too so for about a week we sat around with that. I’m doing good. My wife however is kicking butt. She looks amazing
@@SplashyCannonBall well done dude 💪
This is actually your best video. I actually lost 55 pounds in 2 months with insanity workout. This was 6 years ago . Even tho I have a proper weight/height nowadays, i still feel fat inside. And in this last 6 years I have been doing cardio and eliminanting almost every carb, so I am now considered skinny fat. I have been trying to eat more and have a more balanced workout routine. I love your videos, thy have always helped me a lot. If I have a pierce of advise for people who do not like to workout, it would be : Fuck off will power, focus on discipline. You dont go to work or school because you want to. You go because you have to. Same with workouts. Thanks and sorry for my crappy english
Very informative thank you
Good stuff, enjoyed!
Definitely going to dig into this more. Coming from the wrestling community where making weight the right way is crucial, I think there's a lot I could learn from Jason.
Foreal this is the best explained podcast on working out i've ever heard its crazy. It feels good to hear you guys explain things i've experienced/ thought in my head word for word its kinda weird. Im 6'2 205 at the moment, i was 195-200 2 months ago be4 the gyms closed i felt great, I look like shit now because I ate like trash for 2 months and no activity, but i know it only takes a month or so of weight training and my shape comes right back but i stay about the same weight pretty much been floating around 190-200. I used to have acid reflux bilemia I was 6'2 140 at one point! so I can relate to jason and all it took to gain 50lbs of lean mass was to eat a lot/healthy and workout intense, just like how you guys are explaining it, most people in the industry skip around the good stuff when they explain this shit but you guys nailed on this, gonna start listening to you guys more often!!!!!!!
I wish i found this podcast months ago, its what i needed
Great podcast👏🏻
I have noticed that the HIIT training craze resembles the martial arts conditioning I had done through out the years. My bodyfat fluctuates but the stubborn 1-2 inch waistline has become an issue only after I reached 50 (slowed metabolism?). But the hardest item to stick with is proper nutrition.
Excellent conversation
Like this video covered, increasing from 50 grams to 150 grams of protein per day (keeping calories reasonable) has me looking better now! Just 30 days in.
Funny....he said "you step out of here and life happens" I see this video was recorded right before LIFE HAPPENED TO US ALL....aka COVID!! Gyms closed and no one going to see a personal trainer. Everyone was on their own in an instant. This info came out at just the right time. Too bad I'm just now seeing it. But it's with me forever now. Thanks guys. New fan here.
FORREAL it sucks but we all start somewhere
The part about high fat or high carb definitely made sense for me working in a high stress daily life, adding carbs have made enormous difference for my mood and energy☀️🌄
Same🙏🏻
I have been on keto for yrs but my mood was low. Adding a few carbs and feel better... love popcorn and never lost weight on high fat....
@@booboobearify interesting to hear this, I certainly also realize I feel much better with some carbs 👌
I work as a server in a restaurant and I was fasting and low carb. It jacked me up. This video made sense and now I’m jacking up my carbs

GREAT PODCAST GUYS , KEEP GOING LIKE THIS ...
thx guys, really great info! and it is for free, nice.
Other important points are you have to be on point with tracking your food, weighing it in ounces/grams every meal. Also chew your food until it's a paste to extract the maximum amount of nutrients.
Gosh thank u guys so much for what u do🙌🏾.
The question is how do you reset after doing the damage
Great podcast. Sold me when they started talking real life wisdom. It translates into every aspect of life.

"Power Cleans A.K.A Reverse Curl".
Great content! Love it!
Thank you for your video.
After listening to this, I think I am more confused
Here in 2022 starting of my fitness journey 💪
Does anyone use CGMs to monitor both what you eat and how stressing the body via exercise releases insulin?
Thank you for uploading and sharing.
How do you know what you are missing by hair and stool?
No one ever talks about corn tortillas as a carb source? Does no one like tacos/breakfast tacos everyday?
From what I understand, corn is not a great source of carbs
Your body can’t absorb and digestive corn properly if not at all really. Ever wondered why you poop and if you didn’t chew every bit you’d see corn in there? The tortillas are still corn and most of the time have fillers gums and sometimes oils. Over all not the best source of carbs. I’d recommend you stick to Whole Foods and limit or eliminate grains. No diet can be perfect if you are healthy in most ways I can’t really say you’re gonna have terrible effects from some corn tortillas. I know you said this a year ago but maybe someone reading now has the same question.
Facts! Nixtamalization debunks the claims that corn isn’t absorbed. Same as sprouting nuts and grains and/or pressure-cooking.
Fucking love breakfast tacos 👌
I ate corn tortillas once in awhile. Of course not fried, and lost weight . They are a whole grain and have fiber and magnesium and other minerals. They are also low calories and fat .
late to the party here, but awesome interview!
14:45 YAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
54:28 may be the biggest issue that I have seen across the board. Struggled with this for years.
This dude is like James Bond of nutrition
Dang. This podcast just put me on Jason Phillips👌🏼
The thing about super high intensity strength training is that done a certain way (i.e. a Doug McGuff 'Body By Science' style approach or similar), it is by definition always a novel stimulus. Where's the mistake in my thinking here?
Guy legit sounds like the voice actor for Archer
thank god i'm not alone on this haha

Vegan for 6 years. I’m 86kg and manage to eat around 100g of protein every day. Easy! I am in love with this channel and these guys have helped me adapt my training in so many ways which has greatly benefited me in so many ways but as a vegan if you are intelligent it’s very easy to get what you in regard to protein!
what’s your main protein source?
I'm a vegan of 11 yrs & It has been easy to get enough protein myself. I started weight training in August, and it's still been pretty easy, even though I've bumped up protein intake. I've experienced strength gains too.
@@michaelthompson7217 A wide range which gives me the full essential amino acid profile. Proof is in the pudding with optimal recovery and strength gains. Not hard. What about you?
@@user-zy1sq3cg9m Are you currently doing any of the MAPS programs? If so, how's it going?
Lol and here I am thinking I'm the only vegan listening to this channel 😂 they have a lot of great info and I can confirm as well that protien isnt a problem when building muscle I've been 7 years vegan and lifting fro about 3 years now I just got off a bulk and now cutting I get about 200grms of protien each day, it's really not hard at all and the recovery is crazy I usually last longer in the gym compared to my younger carnivore lifting buddy 💪🏾🌱
Does Phillips train clients not just students? I need a coach
I did 24lb off and 24lb on in 26 weeks natural.
Great info! Also he sounds like Bob from Bobs burgers
Dammit now that I read this I can only hear Bob.

Do u have a podcast on midnight snacking?
Wouldn't a calorie surplus imply fat storage?
If you're gaining weight while eating a certain calorie count + inducing muscular hypertrophy (with exercise), and NOT gaining fat, you're not at a calorie surplus.
You'd be at a calorie maintenance at most. That's because your calorie maintenance level increases with the exercise. So you need more food to feed the gainz. But eating more with exercise isn't a surplus of calorie, it's just a new normal maintenance level.
That said, I'm sure finding the balance is difficult.
Very good point!
people really need to stop arguing that you can't lose fat and gain muscle simultaneously. I've been 183 lbs since November and I was 21% BF. Currently ~13%. People do it all the time. Can someone whos been lifting for most of their adult life do it? No.
It's very possible but expensive
How did you situate your calories to start? Did you start in a slight deficit or a slight bulk? Or did you stay at maintenance? Did you undulate calories every 3-4 weeks, to keep your body from adapting to what you were doing?
@@24base why do you think so?
@@sonja4164 Its expensive because the way it works is by keeping calories the same but substituting calories from fats and carbs to protein which is the most expensive macronutrient.
@@sonja4164 Suppose you were eating 4000 calories. Let's divide this into fat and protein. 2500 from cards. 800 from protein and 1200 from fat. You need to eat enough protein to substitute the other calories. So if you wanted to increase your protein by 800 calories you need to increase your protein by 200g but decrease fat by about 80g. There are other combination of course.
Hey Jason. How r u. I wanna know how to transfer money for NCI certificates. And which is your official account

Anyone knows if the certification is legitimate for jobs?
I build muscle freakeshly easy. To lose fat though, oof. Nope. It's so freaking hard to do both.
What's your ethnicity?

@@MrKinghuman try high protein intermittent fasting. eat between 10am-6pm, keep lifting heavy with long rest in-between sets emphasis on compound movements and do short cardio sessions 10-30mins. you can fit 3 meals in those 8hrs 1st) should be moderate protein, high carb, high fat (this meal is around 50% of daily calories a big ass breakfast) 2nd) high protein moderate carb moderate fat (chicken breast or fish, banana and peanut butter and small amount of baked potatoes this meal is around 30% of daily calories) 3rd)very high protein low carb low fat (low carb protein shake and a salad this meal is 20% of daily calories) if your gonna start your diet on 2,500 daily calories which is a decent starting point if you exercise 5days a week with weights and cardio. then the last meal is 500 calories a 100gram of protein low carb protein shake which is around 420calories and then a 80calorie salad or 80 calories worth of green veggies like steamed broccoli or spinach. eventually you have to lower the calories but depending on you and your body you should be able to get decently cut on 2,000 calories maybe even more. keep protein high and eat lots of low calorie veggies that have the highest nutrient content, your carb sources should be high fiber cereals like kashi cinnamon harvest or potatoes. I recommend eating a little fruit before weight training and cardio is best done on an empty stomach. run in the morning before eating, then hit the weights after the 2nd meal and the 3rd meal is post workout recovery.
@@serenaava. damn, I'm not reading this now, bc it's Saturday night and I'm half in the bag, but holy shit, respect. Ty
Very entertaining and kind of funny.
You talk about cortisol but not glucagon or the effects of cortisol and it's relation to increasing blood glucose gluconeogenesis.
Weight loss is more about hormones than calories
Damn I wish I could have this conversation with someone. I answered messed up to all his initial questions. Sleep, mood, focus, etc. It's all messed up. I eat much better than I ever have (low amounts of flour, sugar etc, lots of veggies and protein, drink lots of water) but I still feel terrible every day. I'm 5'8" 135, 22%, I really don't know how much my macros should be. I'm not heavy but I want to loose fat, gain muscle. So not sure where to even start... 😕 Will look to see if Jason has a book etc to at least get started.
Your body stats are literally perfect. You have an ideal body fat for a woman unless you are prepping for a fitness competition. Do you think you might just be UNDER eating? If you’re feeling terrible, that might be the case, especially if you are eating to try and lose even more fat.
@MaryAnn H I don't think so. I won't bore you with details but I like to eat! I will be weighing my food and writing ingredients to see what's going on. My doctor or maybe the nutritionist at our local Mayo clinic can help me. I don't have the money to ask a pro just yet. Haha. Also it's not that my weight bothers me it's the way I feel and wanting to drop a couple percentage points in fat, gain more muscle! If you ever have the chance to watch Caroline Girvan videos, she's my body inspiration. I'll never be that lean but it's a healthy goal. I love her muscle!!
@@sarahpalacios1920 check out the latest episode where Sal answers a callers question and mentions sodium... It sounds like you’re eating really clean and so if you know you’re eating enough, that could be part of why you feel bad, just a thought! I wish you the best of luck!
My fitness pal telling me to eat more calories after losing 25 punds? Is that normal
If you are overweight can’t your body use the stored calories in your fat to build muscle while eating in caloric deficit?
@VincentVanGeisha what was your regimen?
Great question ! I would love to hear the mind pump guys' say on this.
@VincentVanGeisha that seems pretty hard core. How did you transition out of that after the fat loss?
I'm only half way through but I was hoping they would also touch on body types.
Being an Endomorph most likely changes the approach for any carb enthusiasts depending on the goal your trying to reach.
Extreme cheat day restrictions is one example. Obviously it could be much more devastating to your progress as an endomorph vs other body types.
Great podcast!!
They might’ve skipped it because research shows that the body type stuff is almost entirely irrelevant
What about all these guys like @SimnettNutrition or the @veganstrongteam ?
If you are on a proper program training hard eat at maintenance and enough Protien and enough sleep there is you will still loose weight
Love this channel, so much. But I really do not understand what is wrong with Paleo. I do not eat Paleo. I have a diet that has evolved over the course of my life, and it works for me. But I think that Paleo is a great thing when it takes people from the standard American diet to a diet of whole foods. I cannot understand for the life of me why we would trash it when it has cleaned up the horrid diets and lifestyles are so many people.
do this discount again!
Please be aware. Anyone who quotes “inflammation” as a possible problem, is just leaving the audience with a horrible “ok how can I prove that wrong?” Problem. Use outcome evidence, this is symptomatic of still being in the old paradigm of accepting low level evidence as clinically applicable.
Hmb or high protein intake. Research it
if you look at Jason Phillips from certain angles, he looks like Ewan Mcgregor? Anyone else???
Unpopular opinion: mind pump peaked in 2020

You have a great message, I lived this with fad diets in the 2000’s, and it took me a decade of studying/education/testing to figure out how the body works. It is so important that people aren’t manipulated with bull shit marketing in the fitness world. You have an important message, but I couldn’t even finish watching this because the guest came across so angry/negative. It was a bad vibe.
What were the main principles you learned on how the body works?
I feel this, such a bloody blessing that our mindset has progressed so much since then 😂
There must be something wrong with me, I’m just so damn hungry all the time.

Just in case you hadn’t heard any of them say that in the last 30 seconds
Did he really say 20% body fat is unhealthy and i should be closer to 12% as a women? I thought staying super lean long term was not healthy.

What is the reason for cheating on one self? It is irrational to do so.
Self sabotage might be a factor. Or, something simpler, like your body feels deprived and feels the need to binge to compensate all the days on the diet.
Not everyone is rational all the time, Mr. Spock. But you’re right, it makes no sense to sabotage yourself.
Is he saying that you have to be in a calorie surplus to build muscle? Because if so that’s not true. To build muscle you just need the right amount of protein.
What would you suggest I should do if I struggle with building additional muscle? I have a decent base but am trying to break through for more definition : Bf ~17% year round, macros met and even go over on protein, progressive overload, some sets to failure, sleep adequate. I know it’s a slower process at this point but feel if I add more training volume it’s becomes counterproductive.
I’m confused, you talk about the dangers of yo-yo diets, but then you talk about going into periods of deficit and refeeding quickly - is that not a yo-yo diet?
For the average person just trying to lose fat & be healthy, yo-yoing is dangerous.
For someone with a specific fitness goal or an athlete, it's still dangerous but they should know that going in & have protocols in place to help mitigate some of the damage done.
No, deficit/re-feed can be structured and planned. Most people who yo-yo do it from lack of discipline and lack of planning and not sticking to their plans
With me being 260 pounds I’m at 296g of protein 😅
Building muscle causes fat loss. A mixture of lifting, running, and swimming will cause strength gain and fat loss.
This video is basically telling me "you have always been doing it wrong"
I’m a bikini girl and I listen and love you guys!
I wonder who the wrestler that Jason trained is..
The way he talked, it was someone who had been there for a bit. Looking back at the card, potentially Elias or Corbin
I can't recommend the Agoge Diet enough, that stuff helped me gain so much muscle.
I do eat like this and still struggle to add muscle. I’m powering through and am going to keep trying. Was there anything specific about the diet or training that you think made a difference?
Great talk, just one thing I disagree is assuming vegans always eat low protein. I have been vegan for over 2 years and I can easily get 2g/kg of bodyweight daily (I track my intake) without protein powder. More knowledge about veganism needed there :)
He's assuming the average vegan who is not tracking their shit is low protein, and he's correct. Doesn't mean every single one is. But that way of eating naturally leads to low protein if you aren't paying attention
I get your point. I agree with @Eric E. If you're going to eat a plant based diet, educating yourself on how to do it and tracking in the beginning are important.
I think they Mind Pump guys talking about the average person. A lot of people I've encountered think that eating plant based means eating a lot of green veggies & fruit. They end up not eating enough calories overall (thereby not eating enough protein by default unfortunately) because veggies & fruit aren't calorie dense.
That being said, I do think that they're a bit biased against plant diets. Any diet you switch to that you're not used to eating, you can run into problems if you don't do your due diligence first & track what you're doing for a while, not just plant based diets. Also, they always mention how women in general are notorious for undereating protein. They aren't talking about vegan women either, just the general population. It's weird.
Another point that they make frequently is how some people can develop gut health issues when they increase their protein levels. If a person doesn't do proper due diligence before increasing their protein, they'd have no idea that this could happen. They're always joking about "protein farts."
Interestingly (considering they seem to be biased), Sal will frequently praise Blue Zone populations (who all eat diets that are very heavily plant centered), Dr Valter Longo & the fasting mimicking diet studies (who's research shows that a plant based diet is better for health & longevity), and he always mentions the glycemic index (who's creator recommends a plant based diet). So it's a very interesting dichotomy. Seems to be a bit of cognitive dissonance there imo. If they could put the bias aside & dig into just a fraction of the research, they'd be shocked.
I've been vegan for about 11 yrs now. I don't have a problem getting enough protein. I recently started MAPS Anabolic, and it's been great. No problem getting adequate protein to keep progressing in the gym.
Interesting how examples are so stereotypical: House wife vs CEO man. 🤦🏻♀️
Cause a house husband and CEO wife is so common right?
I only believe in Agoge diet. They provide you with personalized meal plan, workout plan, fitness tips, healthy recipes. Thats everything you need to transform your body and get six pack :D
