What a fantastic Podcast that was, a great insight into getting a Professional Referee's Views, Des was a brilliant speakt was full of fantastic stories. A brilliant down to earth Podcast with 2 excellent men in conversation with 2 real football people with great knowledge of the game. Superb Craig and more like that would be brilliant. Give Des a thank you for that as well. Up there with with the best of your podcasts. Engrossing from start to finish 👑🇬🇧👈🇧🇪
VAR was introduced and forced on the game by, pay per view tv bosses, they put £Billions into the game and want money back by creating delays and stoppages in the game, sooner or later the stoppages will be filled with money spinning adverts. VAR also creates content for the media, press and a chance to fill pay per view schedules with debate and discussion. The person at the sfa that Des didn't get on with may have been Tiny Wharton, he wanted tall slim athletic refs that could look down on players, (Brines, Richmond, Thompson, etc.). Referees calling players by their first name is a schoolboy error, it makes the players that don't know the ref, think the ref is a friend or acquaintance of the players who's name he knows. Des mentioned Eddie Smith, story allegedly was, he was binned after it became known, he is allegedly a passionate Celtic fan, even Celtic fans were allegedly embarrassed by his alleged biased performance in a Celtic V Motherwell match. Category 1 refs don't get to pick their matches, when Herbertson calls, the ref has to say, ''where and when?'', not, ''I want this game or I want that game'', asking may have been the beginning of the end for Des. Des may have been given games in lower leagues and further away, eventually that may have caused him to resign. Des didn't mention, he would have needed a certain job to become a Category 1 referee, you might be the best ref in the country but if you pack shelves in a supermarket or cut grass for the council etc. you won't be a Category 1 referee.
