When I was around 14 years old, my mother was in the storm of her addiction. A cousin of mine that was a gospel singer gave my mother this concert on VHS, and I listened to this tape day in and day out learning every single word of Helen’s testimony & songs. I use to play that VHS tape for my mother to keep her from leaving to go get high. Sometimes it worked sometimes it didn’t, but what it did do EVERY TIME is get me through some pretty dark days as a child. I can’t thank this lady enough for her gift of song that got me through. It was her music that kept me close to God that gave me the ability to continuously pray for my mothers strength to break her addiction even in my darkest days when I hated her. Eventually, God took the taste of crack cocaine out of her mouth but it wasn’t till I was grown with kids of my own that she finally kicked her addiction. Things between us isn’t the best, but I’m at peace with where things are.
