Very detailed Video. Well done mate. For all those watching this video; "NEVER REMOVE THE SHUT-OFF VALVE!!!". I agree all that water cooling crap is useless, but the Shut-Off Valve is the only way to shut off a Diesel engine that is in a Run-A-Way state. The Shut-Off valve chokes the motor by stopping the intake air. I do agree that the EGR delete is desirable, but do not use the straight pipe. My wife and daughter were out in our 2000 TDI when the turbo seals went and motor oil was being sucked directly into the intake an burned unregulated. This "Run-A-Way" causes huge amounts of white smoke and the tachometer will red line, and if you don't do anything within seconds your small problem can total your auto and possibly burn down your house. The fail-safe that VW has provided is turn the ignition key off and activate the Shut-Off Valve. Well, If you remove the Shut-Off valve then turning off the key will do nothing and at the least, your motor will be destroyed, and at the worst, your auto and anything around it will be burned to the ground. I was able to replace the turbo and the little TDI is still on the road today with over 320,000 US miles on it. Stay safe everyone.

@@milcotto4153 Yes he used a replacement pipe EGR delete. It looks nice. These pipes are available on ebay and have the problem of removing the vacuum controlled Shut-Off Valve that protects your Vdub from a diesel "Run-A-Way". I would not recommend using these pipes. I would only remove the EGR water cooler and use the block-off plates. The Shut-Off Valve may need cleaning but the diesel soot inside should be easily removed because it is still wet and not coked.

"I used a mix of an industrial strength soap called Oil Eater and hot water. Scraped out as much gunk out of the manifold as I could using hand tools and soaked it in that solution for 2 days. That's how it turned out so good. No fire or flames needed."

Just watched this vid, its great. No question this procedure takes the ALH TDI to a new level. I would add a few things..While you have everything off the back of the engine (intake manifold in particular), check/rebuild or replace the Turbo/Actuator. I would also change all the vacuum lines while you have everything apart. I would also consider changing the vacuum valves along with new lines. There are vacuum caps you can buy so you can actually take out the hoses you plugged with bolts. The check engine light can be taken out with an ECR tune. Good to do the tune with new injector nozzles.

$170? For a handful of parts you can get at Home Depot, or make yourself? Cut the flange off the EGR valve and weld a pipe to it. "BAM! Racepipe!". Cut the flanges off the EGR cooler pipes, plug weld the hole in the middle, "BAM, block off plate!" Or use the gasket as pattern and cut your block-off from scrap 1/8" plate. I mean no insult, good install video, but they're making a killing on these kits!

In the center of the GT1749V turbo there is a oil supply and return line. These line provide crank case oil to the center of the turbo to lubricate the center shaft that spins a very high RPMs. On the exhaust and intake side there are seals that prevent that oil from entering either the exhaust or intake, but these seals don't last forever. The Vapor issue will not cause a Run-A-Way. It just gums up the works. I remove my EGR but keep the shut off valve.

  • @JonDarnbrough

Just for anyone wondering what the results of this are. I have fitted the same kit from Darkside Developments in the UK, Removing the EGR etc. allows your Turbo to spool up at lower revs and as there is now a smooth air flow it improves the feeling and power from the turbo. It helps to get rid of the sooty smoke you get when accelerating hard and improves fuel economy, As for the check engine light or emissions check light. You can have the line of code in the engine management software that deals with the EGR removed, which turns off the light. I have the 1.9 TDi 130 VW Bora on a 51 plate and i am getting an average of 51 MPG. My car has done 105,000 steady miles The whole kit costs 90 GBP for the EGR delete and 20 GBP for the extended water pipe. It does not effect the M.O.T. Now there is no EGR in the way, you do not get blocked up with soot over time.

That's a heck of a lot of work for vw diesel. But what came to mind if you ever planned to upgrade. A turbo and wastegate, the wastegate would have the perfect place to sit where that block plate you installed on the exhaust manifold. Thought about getting a diesel vw at one time. But I noticed they have gas ones as well with less emission hassles and issues. There are many things we can get away with over the road where I'm from. But rolling coal in newer cars and trucks isn't 1 of them.

Hello. The shotoff solenoid works with the ignition. Igniton on and the vacuum there lets the fuel flow. Igniton off, and the vacuum shots off the fuelpump. (englis is not my main language so its little hard to explane). i Use it on my MB 3.0TD engine as well. with igniton on it lets the vacuum clap in the fuel pump at the engine to use fuel. Thats why they call it shotoff solenoid.

To this day, my check engine light is still on. I've gotten used to it so it really doesn't bother me too much. However, from what I've read, you can get a custom tune for your ECM that can turn off the EGR function, which fools the computer into thinking the EGR system is intact & functional, thus turning off the check engine light. But that probably isn't cheap.....

The reason its called the shutoff solenoid is because the butterfly flap within the egr acts as a way to starve the engine of oxygen upon shutdown as there is no butterfly flap on the intake manifold as there as on a petrol, known as the 'throttle body' this stops the engine running on when turned off at the key on slight bits of fuel or oil left in the cylinders, preventing a shudder at shut off as it tries to keep running, that gives that flap the name of an 'anti-shudder valve'

Thanks for a very informative and easy to understand vid. Can you tell me what performance gains you made and what did you do about deleting the egr from your ecu? Thanks again, Paul

I noticed about a 2 mpg gain in fuel economy, better throttle response and power at the top end when running it hard. Not to mention not having to take any components off for cleaning ever again and best of all, a more healthy engine overall. About 6 months after I did this video, I got the Eco tune from Malone Tuning to tell the ECU to turn off all EGR functions, and turning off that pesky CEL.

Search for Darkside Developments and they have EGR delete kits for sale. They're in the UK but ship worldwide.

Even tho I don't recommend going 90 mph on a public street.....I would definitely take off your intake manifold & check the carbon buildup in it and give it a good cleaning. In a severe case, Im sure it would hinder proper airflow, especially at that high of a speed.

I was thinking about building one myself it doesn't seem to be too bad, my car is throwing an excessive egr flow code and figured it would be cheaper and better to delete it.

After 16:00 or so you take of the hoses that connect to the firewall .. what purpose do these hoses have?

I have a 97 or 8 Passat the turbo is also bad seems jammed up and blowing oil. what did this do and what are the cons of this change. nice vid & informative a few owners have the same thoughts but they don't show the how to.

Does doing this affect (good or bad) MPG? What about performance? (good ro bad)? Also, will this affect emissions? How do I prevent the check engine light permanently if I don't' have VCDS?

What about the check engine light. How do you take it off the dash?

If I simply clean the valve and intake, and only install a “blocking plate”, putting the valve and cooler back, can I avoid having to reprogram the ECU?

I'm gonna have to do this soon. I've just been running it unplugged for the last 12 months. I check the codes now and then and yep, no flow, just how I want it
