The analysis on Conan seems spot on. He wants to desperately struggle and battle order and the rules, but without ever actually threatening the established order. He needs the box so he can draw a circle inside of it.

He’s not. His show was watered down and childish Letterman left over by a try too hard performer with good edgy writers. David Letterman is the GOAT because he was the only one who turned the medium on its head. Everyone else, most of all Conan, copied him.
